- "Remember your gifts. Strategy. Cunning. Ferocity. Love. All of that is infused in this... Every seam on the suit shows that you're part of us. And we're part of you."
- ―Taloa Lopez to Maya Lopez[src]
Echo's Choctaw Dress is a traditional Choctaw tribe dress that was made for Echo by Chula Battiest, allowing her to feel connected to her echoing ancestors.
History[]
Visions of the Ancestors[]
When Chula Battiest was giving birth, she got caught up in prenatal issues, causing the labor to be painful and dangerous. However, she was able to see her ancestors giving her strength, which allowed her and her baby to survive. Years later, similar instances happened to Maya Lopez. The two talked and Battiest realized what the true purpose was.[1]
Creation[]
Having been told by Maya Lopez that she was abandoned by her, Chula Battiest walked into her sewing room and unveiled a mannequin before breaking down in tears. Battiest then went to work in carefully crafting Lopez a suit full of symbolism and honor.[1]
Echoes of Infusion[]
Echo's Use[]
Taloa Lopez talks to Maya Lopez about the dress
Maya Lopez rushed into Chula Battiest's House, worried about her safety. She walked into the sewing room to see an illusion of Taloa Lopez in front of her. Lopez and her late mother talked until Taloa told Lopez about her gifts and qualities that made her great. She explained that all of those qualities are shared among ancestors and infused into the suit for her. Lopez donned the suit and went to the Haskell County Fairgrounds to fight Kingpin.
Echo's ancestors echo through her
Echo met with Kingpin, who had Chula Battiest and Bonnie restrained and in his possession. Lopez and Fisk argued while Bonnie translated. However, Echo was punched to the ground as Fisk confirmed that he had indeed killed William Lopez. Echo then channeled her ancestors, who echoed through her, and fought Kingpin with their help until she was able to get into his mind, showing Fisk his trauma and trying to cure it. However, she found his trauma was too much to cure and left the illusion. Fisk then escaped, leaving Echo triumphant.[2]
Behind the Scenes[]
- The traditional Choctaw dress has various designs that mean many things in Choctaw culture.[3]
- The diamonds on the suit's shoulders represents respect to nature, with the pattern being derived from rattlesnakes.[3]
- The left shoulder and right wrist display a spiral, common among her ancestors when they are given strength from one another.
- The right shoulder displays the hand-eye symbol with horned serpents, whose true meaning has been lost to time, but many believe it to be related to a portal to the "Upperworld". The specific symbol with the serpents derived from Mississippi tribes.[4]
- The chest also displays a sun symbol, synonimus with Echo's character.
- The left wrist displays the Choctaw logo.
- Once the robe is removed, the waist displays a sun symbol which means "Continual Happiness for All Stages of Life".[5]
