An ancient sword, the Ebony Blade was connected to the family history of Dane Whitman. Members of the Eternals were also aware of the existence of the sword.
In 2024, the sword, kept in a box, had found its way to Dane Whitman in London. Whitman pondered over the box, finally building the courage to open it and look upon the sword, reading its inscription. As he did, the voice of Blade caught him off guard, asking him if he was ready to wield the sword for himself.[3]
The Ebony Blade possesses magical properties and is able to transform the wielder into the Black Knight. The material on the blade can react to a hand approaching it, guiding itself toward the hand.
In the comics, the Ebony Blade is a magical sword wielded primarily by the Black Knight, but also sometimes used by Black Panther and Malekith.

The Ebony Blade was featured in concept art for Doctor Strage in The Art of Doctor Strange, where it appears closer to a dagger in design rather than the sword design used in Eternals. The former design was ultimately cut from the film.[5]
