"Tell you what: you play his game. And if you can convince him to leave, I'll let you both go."

Duel to D'Spayre is an arcade game within the Darkforce Dimension that Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen play in an attempt to rescue Johnson.

History

"Just so you know, your game sucks."
"Don't hate the game, hate the player who chose it."
Tandy Bowen and Samedi[src]

In the aftermath of the Rescue of Tandy Bowen from the Viking Motel, Tyrone Johnson became engulfed in a massive outburst of Darkforce, which trapped him inside the Darkforce Dimension. Johnson remained stuck in an arcade game room managed by Samedi, where he played the arcade game called Duel to D'Spayre. In this game, Johnson controlled an avatar of himself fighting thugs in an attempt to reach D'Spayre, who represented the final boss of the game.

When Tandy Bowen entered the Darkforce Dimension to save her friend, she was forced to take part in the game as well, hoping that Johnson would agree to come back with her if they won the game. Therefore, both Johnson and Bowen fought against thugs, using their respective powers based on Darkforce and Lightforce, living the events of the game as they controlled their respective avatars. Initially, they easily made their way through the first two levels, taking down many enemies on the way.

However, things changed when they arrived in the final level, which happened to be a recreation of the Viking Motel where Bowen had been briefly sequestrated by D'Spayre. Seeing this caused Bowen to lose her courage, and although she was able to kill some enemies and cut through the walls with her Lightforce daggers, the appearance of D'Spayre as the final boss caused her to simply quit the game, much to Johnson's astonishment.

While Johnson blamed Bowen for quitting, Bowen complained about the game to Samedi, who did not care much about her criticism. Johnson explained that he was better off playing the game in the Darkforce Dimension as he had a chance to win, unlike in the real world where he felt he was always losing. Still, Bowen was able to convince him to give up on the game as he was dying in the real world and that there were several people who would really miss him: his mother, Evita Fusilier, and most of all, Bowen herself.[1]
