- "Before my father died, he told me I had a half-sister that he imprisoned in Hel. Then she returned home and stabbed me in the eye, so... I had to kill her. It's life."
- ―Thor to the Guardians of the Galaxy[src]
The Duel in the Royal Palace of Valaskjalf was the final confrontation for the Asgardian throne, between Thor and Hela.
Background[]
Thor, Valkyrie and Bruce Banner arrived to Asgard in the Commodore. Thor informed them that a man was on the ground in Asgard, referring to Heimdall and the plan they had agreed to. Heimdall told the Asgardians that Hela had arrived at the fortress and began to evacuate them. Hela then broke down the doors to the refuge.
Meanwhile, Thor gave Valkyrie her former outfit to wear into battle. Thor went to the throne room of Asgard and seated himself there, awaiting Hela. Hela broke down the doors to the refuge, as the Asgardians used the opportunity to cross the Bifrost Bridge, hoping to escape.[1]
Duel[]
Hela enters the throne room.
Hela realized that Thor was in the throne room, and left the refuge to go to confront him. Hela arrived at the palace to confront her brother. Surprised he was still alive, Hela teased Thor about it, to which he simply said that he liked how she changed the throne room.
Hela and Thor engage in battle.
Hela then commented how Odin's solution to everything was covering things up. Then, Hela told Thor how he had not met the real Odin, but the one who regretted his time as conqueror. Thor mocked her speech by saying that he did not want to be King, but given she was the other option he had to step in, labeling her as the worst. Hela urged Thor to leave her throne as she put on her helmet. Thor told her that Odin used to say how a wise king never sought war, but before he could finish the sentence, Hela completed it by saying "but must always be ready for it."
Hela pins down Thor
Thor used his father's spear, Gungnir, to engage her in a battle, but Hela overpowered him. During their fight, Hela constantly showed her superiority to Thor. She finally struck him across the face with a blade, slicing his eye out. Hela pinned Thor down and told him she will get the Hofund. Hela mockingly asked him what was he God of again. Before he could answer, Thor had a vision to his father in Norway seeking for his advise one more. Thor told Odin he was not strong enough to defeat Hela and that she had already taken Asgard. Odin replied that Asgard was not a place, but a people, and wherever Asgardians stood, that would be Asgard. Thor said he was not as strong as him to take down Hela, to which Odin replied he was stronger than him and that he did not need Mjølnir to channel his powers.
Thor blasts Hela away with a bolt of lightning.
Thor broke out of his vision to continue his fight against Hela. He summoned a massive bolt of lightning that blasted Hela away. Thor then went to the Rainbow Bridge to fight off Hela's army and save the Asgardians.[1]
Aftermath[]
Thor channeling his lightning powers
Thor went to the Rainbow Bridge to fight Hela's Berserker Army. He joined Loki, Heimdall, Valkyrie and the Sakaaran Rebels led by Korg. The battle would eventually settle Asgard's fate as inspired by his father's words, Thor realized that in order to stop Hela, they had to destroy her power source: Asgard.[1]
The aftermath of Ragnarök left the Asgardians vulnerable to Thanos, who ambushed them on the Statesman them months later in outer space.[3]
