Shang-Chi promises to return to Xu Xialing
During his war against the Iron Gang, Xu Wenwu tasked Shang-Chi with tracking down and assassinating the leader of the gang as revenge for Ying Li's death. Although Shang-Chi promised Xu Xialing that he will be back soon, he never returned, as he fled to United States of America, horrified by what he committed. After waiting for six years, Xialing realized that Shang-Chi will not come back. Being neglected by her father and abandoned by her brother, led Xialing to running away to Macau where she founded the Golden Daggers Club and set up a large underground tournament, building her own empire.
Years later, Wenwu sent the Ten Rings after Shang-Chi to acquire his Eye of the Dragon. Led by Razor Fist, a group of operatives ambushed Shang-Chi in San Francisco. Although Shang-Chi was able to hold out in the fight and defeat the attackers, Razor Fist managed to steal his pendant. Fearing that the Ten Rings will come after Xialing next, as she had the second Eye, Shang-Chi and Katy Chen traveled to China, led by the postcard she seemingly sent to him.[1]

Shang-Chi and Katy Chen flew to Macau and traveled to the address on the postcard, finding the Golden Daggers Club. There, they were greeted by Jon Jon, a ringmaster of the underground fight club, who knew about Shang-Chi from the video of his fight on the bus going viral. Jon Jon explained to them the rules of the tournament and stated that Shang-Chi have to participate too, as he signed the contract without reading it. Jon Jon promised that after a fight, he will help him with searching for his sister, and Shang-Chi reluctantly agreed.
Shang-Chi is defeated by Xu Xialing
However, once in the ring, he suddenly found out that Xu Xialing was his opponent for the fight, who immediately attacked him right off the bat. Shang-Chi did not want to fight his sister, so he took the defensive approach, while Xialing continued to attack him. Shang-Chi informed her that their father was coming after her and all he wants is to help her, so he refused to fight. Xialing only replied that he should not have come back before knocking him out, still being angry that he abandoned her back in the day. As Xialing was declared a victor, Chen won a large sum of money as she placed her bet against Shang-Chi.[1]

Shang-Chi got a chance to speak with Xu Xialing and explained to her the situation, telling her about the Ten Rings attacking him in San Francisco and that they will come for her as well. As Xialing stated that she did not need his help, they all realized that the postcard he received was a trap. A large group of the Ten Rings, led by the Death Dealer and Razor Fist, stormed the club to find Xialing and take her pendant. As Xialing seemingly escaped from the building, Shang-Chi and Katy Chen attempted to run away as well, only to be confronted by the Ten Rings.[1]
