The Double-Edged Sword was a double-bladed weapon used by Thanos.
History
Massacre of the Korbinites
Thanos used his Double-Edged Sword during his attack on the Korbinites in 2014. Following the massacre, he returned to the Sanctuary II, where he placed the sword aside and was informed that the Power Stone had been located on Morag.[1]
Battle of Earth
In an alternate timeline 2014, after returning from Korbin, Thanos was informed that the Power Stone had been located on Morag. However, as he was ready to deploy Gamora and Nebula to aid Ronan the Accuser, Nebula's network synced with that of another Nebula, one who had traveled from the future. After filtering through the future Nebula's memories and learning about the Infinity War, Thanos decided to travel through time to 2023 in order to kill the Avengers and obtain all six Infinity Stones from them, bringing his Double-Edged Sword with him.
After arriving at the ruins of the New Avengers Facility, Thanos placed the sword in the ground and hung his helmet from it as he waited for the Avengers to arrive. He used his sword extensively against the team of Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America, using it to deflect Iron Man's repulsor beams, blocking Thor's attempts to behead him with Stormbreaker and Mjølnir and managing to shatter Captain America's Vibranium shield.
During the Battle of Earth, the sword was broken in half by Scarlet Witch. However, Thanos hurled one of the broken halves at Luis' Van before Captain Marvel could enter the Quantum Tunnel with the Nano Gauntlet, destroying the van, the tunnel and the sword half in the process.[1]
Capabilities
This massive Double-Edged Sword was Thanos' primary weapon during his days as a warlord. Other than a melee weapon, it could also be used as a throwing weapon that returned back to Thanos like a boomerang. The sword was made from an extremely sturdy material, being durable enough to withstand strikes from both Stormbreaker and Mjølnir. It was able to break through vibranium, having shattered Captain America's Shield after repeatedly striking it.
Behind the Scenes
- Comic book writer Jim Starlin, who created Thanos, mentioned in an interview with Digital Spy that the Double-Edged Sword was inspired by the ThanosCopter, a helicopter piloted by Thanos in Larry Lieber's Spidey Super Stories. Though he admits he liked Avengers: Endgame more than Avengers: Infinity War, however, Starlin noted that the Double-Edged Sword was the film's only aspect he really disliked.[2]
