"Daredevil practiced vigilante justice in our backyard and we applauded him for it. I know that I did. And we never stopped to think that maybe his actions could open the door for men like this. Men with guns. Men who think that the law belongs to them."
Karen Page

Dogs to a Gunfight is the second episode of the second season of the television series Daredevil.

Synopsis[]

As Murdock recovers from an attack, Foggy and Karen fight to protect their new client from both the law and the Kitchen's newest vigilante.

Plot[]

Dd202 0182

Following a shootout at Metro-General Hospital, Karen Page and Grotto are taken to the 15th Precinct Police Station, while Foggy Nelson overhears the NYPD officers discussing that shots were fired from a nearby rooftop. Frantic, Nelson searches nearby rooftops and finds injured and uncouncious Daredevil with the bullet in his helmet, and takes him to his apartment. As Murdock wakes up, Nelson tells him that they will join Page and Grotto at the precinct to make a deal with the District Attorney and ensure Grotto's safety. Murdock is still concerned that the shooter is out there causing mayhem in the city, but Nelson insists that he cannot go after him after barely surviving.

Nelson Mahoney Punisher

At the precinct, Page fills out the Witness Protection request for Grotto, who wonders how is Page keeping it cool after the shootout, and she admits that she is terrified. Nelson then joins him and demands explanation from Grotto, since he was not targeted by an "army", but just one man. Grotto tells him that he heard the rumors but did not believe them at first, as he thought one man cannot kill so many people with such precision. Brett Mahoney brings Grotto some clothes and talks to Nelson and Page about the perpetrator, saying that they should accept any deal with the DA's office and get themselves out of all this. Mahoney tells them that the shooter is a vigilante, who targets crime families, although his bloody methods are different from Daredevil, which casts doubt on the whole vigilante situation in New York City.

Nelson and Page are approached by DA Samantha Reyes and Blake Tower who came to take Grotto under their custody, but Nelson tells her that Grotto gave a list of his conditions. Tower tells them to recuse, so Grotto's case could be handled by a team with more expertise but Nelson reminds them about Wilson Fisk, whose case was handled by them. Reyes insists that they should budge, as Nelson and Murdock will be in need of a favor from DA's office in the future, but Nelson then pretends to call the U.S. Attorney's office. He states that the DA's office has no jurisdiction over the witness protection, taking a note of Reyes' demands to take over Grotto's case, forcing her to accept their terms.

Negociations

Grotto offers Reyes and Tower the information about the Kitchen Irish but Reyes says that since most of his associates are dead or fleeing the country, that would not work for them. Tower suggests Grotto to wear a wire to meet with Edgar Brass, but Grotto is afraid of what Brass might do to him and refuses. Reyes and Tower tell Grotto that if he refuses, he is free to go, but then show him the photos of the shooter's previous victims, citing that any of his targets that got away got killed soon after. Reyes tells Grotto that the DA's office is his only chance to save himself, so he and his legal team must make a decision. As Reyes leaves, Tower tells Nelson and Page more information about the investigation, saying that the shooter takes his targets out with military precision, and adds that he was given a code name: the Punisher.

PunisherPreparesToKillClint

The Punisher comes to Clint's pawn shop, asking if he has a mobile communication rig that can get NYPD's encrypted frequencies. Clint is wary but gives the Punisher the police equipment he wanted, asking for $1,000 for all. The Punisher pays him and then asks for the tape from the camera that was recording them and the shells from Clint's gun that he kept under the counter. As the Punisher is on his way out, Clint offers him an assortment of pornography he had, but the Punisher ignores him until Clint mentions that he has some child pornography as well. As the Punisher comes back to him, Clint thinks that he got interested, but the Punisher then beats Clint to death with a bat.

At Nelson and Murdock Law Office, Nelson looks through piling bills, while Page searches the names of the Punisher's victims, as she is thinking that she could be one of them. She is concerned that considering that she is somehow drawing all this bad luck to her, first with Fisk and now the Punisher. Nelson tells her that Punisher is just a nickname and to not worry about it but Page feels that somehow she might deserve it. He tells her that he is the one that needs to be punished not her and that she is awesome for getting away.

Back at Murdock's apartment, he experiences an effect of a bullet to his head, temporarily losing his hearing which terrifies him. Later, as his hearing is slowly coming back, Murdock gets visited by Page who is still shaken after being targeted by the Punisher at Metro-General. Murdock comforts her, while Page suspects that Murdock might keep a secret from her and as Murdock promises that there is nothing to worry about, she decides not to pry. They discuss the deal with DA and Page says Reyes is using Grotto's case for her political career, before the topic shifts to the Punisher. Page tells Murdock that the Punisher was inevitable after men like Daredevil took the law into their hands and despite Murdock's claims, she is concerned that in New York good people are forced to resort to violence for their intentions.

Murdock following a scent of blood

Later, Murdock visits Melvin Potter, asking him to check his helmet that was damaged in the fight with the Punisher. Potter says that considering the range, the shot could be lethal, so the Punisher likely intended it as a warning shot. He then tells him that the bullet cracked it and that it has compromised the whole helmet and he needs to make a new helmet but Murdock needs at least a quick fix for one night, so he could go after the Punisher. Later, Murdock finds the Punisher's hideout where he finds maps and the communication equipment, realizing that the Punisher is aware of the police's plans to capture him and is targeting Grotto again.

At night, the police and DA's office organize a sting operation at the container yard, where Grotto is supposed to meet with Brass, however, Nelson and Page realize that it was an ambush for the Punisher, and Grotto was simply bait. Aware of Reyes' plans, the Punisher kills several Dogs of Hell and steals one of their trucks, ramming it into a container yard as a diversion. While the SWAT is distracted, the Punisher takes a position at the nearby rooftop and takes an aim at Grotto, but Daredevil interrupts him again, allowing Grotto to escape. As Daredevil and the Punisher fight, Reyes orders SWAT to open fire at both of them, which results in both of them falling through a glass ceiling. Wounded in the arm, the Punisher retreats, taking an uncouncsious Daredevil with him.
