- "We took the house down, sir. But there's no sign of a body."
- ―Eric Savin to Aldrich Killian[src]
The Destruction of Tony Stark's Mansion was an assassination attempt on Tony Stark committed by Extremis Soldiers led by Eric Savin on Aldrich Killian's orders. While Stark's home was destroyed and the world became convinced that he was dead, Stark survived the attack and set out to uncover the true identity of the Mandarin.
Background[]
- "There's no politics here, it's just good old-fashioned revenge. There's no Pentagon, it's just you and me. And on the off chance you're a man, here's my home address, 10-8-80 Malibu Point, 90265. I'll leave the door unlocked."
- ―Tony Stark[src]
Tony Stark was visiting his friend Happy Hogan at a hospital after an explosion at the TCL Chinese Theatre. While leaving, multiple reporters tried to interview him. Someone asked why Stark had not killed the Mandarin by now. To this, he threatened the Mandarin publicly and on television, and also gave him his address so they could fight. At his mansion, Stark studied the Mandarin's previous attacks and was later greeted by Maya Hansen, who tried to warn him of the attack the Mandarin was bringing to them. Pepper Potts was also in the mansion, trying to convince Stark to leave before the terrorist could retaliate.[2]
Destruction[]
- "Are we still at 'ding-dong'? We're supposed to be on total security lockdown. Come on, I threatened a terrorist!"
"There's only so much I can do, sir, when you give the world's press your home address." - ―Tony Stark and J.A.R.V.I.S.[src]
Three heavily armed helicopters led by Eric Savin fired a missile through the windows of the mansion. Tony Stark made J.A.R.V.I.S. put the Mark XLII on Pepper Potts to protect her. Potts got Maya Hansen out of the building so that she wasn't killed from the debris. Stark tried to keep himself from getting hit by the missiles. When Potts and Hansen got out safely, Stark had J.A.R.V.I.S. fly the Mark XLII to him as the helicopters began firing with their miniguns.
As the mansion began to slide off the cliff, Stark used his repulsors to throw his piano at one of the helicopters, destroying it. With his Mark XLII suit malfunctioning, Stark threw one of his forearm rockets at the second helicopter and used his repulsor to detonate it. The out-of-control helicopter crashed into the mansion as the remaining helicopter fired several more missiles into the building, causing it to collapse and fall into the ocean with Stark inside.
Now caught up in the debris, Stark was unable to avoid being buried by the rubble at the bottom of the ocean. Once the suit's flight power was operational, J.A.R.V.I.S. removed Mark XLII's glove and used it to pull Stark clear and fly him out of the ocean. J.A.R.V.I.S. auto-piloted the suit on the last flight plan to which it was programmed, which was Rose Hill, Tennessee.[2]
Aftermath[]
- "That... that's—is that Iron Man?"
"Technically, I am."
"Technically, you're dead." - ―Harley Keener and Tony Stark[src]
With the world assuming he was killed in the attack, Tony Stark woke up in Rose Hill, Tennessee. Harley Keener helped him discover more about the Mandarin's attacks before he was ambushed by Ellen Brandt and Eric Savin. Stark had also managed to get a message to Pepper Potts, informing her that he was still alive.[2]
