"Sometimes you gotta sacrifice a five for a ten."
―Darius Davis to Alex Wilder[src]

Darius Davis was the leader of the Crips. Once he was released from the Los Angeles Penitentiary, Davis confronted his former friend Geoffrey Wilder, considering that the latter owed him. Davis went as far as to kidnap Wilder's son Alex Wilder. This brought him to witness the confrontation between PRIDE and the Runaways and to strike an uneasy alliance with the teenagers.

Davis and Alex remained in contact during the latter's elopement, but Davis eventually agreed to return Alex to Geoffrey in exchange for the management of the PRIDE Construction Site. However, before he could enjoy his new life, Darius was assassinated by Catherine Wilder at the Gordon Hotel so that he could be framed for the murder of Destiny Gonzalez.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Darius Davis grew up in Los Angeles with his best friend, Geoffrey Wilder. They often stayed at his Nana B's house to stay out of trouble. They regularly played dominos and Davis won many and most times.[2]

Imprisoned[]

"I need you to tell them that you shot Osiris, not me. I got a deal on the table that'll change all our lives. The thing is, I gotta get out of here to make it work."
"G, man, you asking me to do a dime at least, bro."

Davis and Geoffrey Wilder in prison

Darius Davis served a jail sentence in the Los Angeles Penitentiary along with his best friend Geoffrey Wilder. One day, Wilder came to see him and asked him to take the responsibility for his crime, which would enable Wilder to be quickly released. Wilder promised that once Davis would get out of prison as well, he would become the new leader of the Crips and that Wilder would take care of Davis' grandmother Nana B.

Davis was ultimately released and effectively became the new leader of the Crips. Nevertheless, he felt that Wilder had wronged him and had not kept good on his promise.[3]

"When you build a new school in my 'hood, homie, there's taxes to pay."
―Darius Davis to Geoffrey Wilder[src]

Davis led the Crips into the PRIDE Construction Site, which was being managed by Geoffrey Wilder Construction Inc.. He dismissed all the workers and asked Howard to warn Geoffrey Wilder of the intrusion. When Wilder finally came, Davis explained the reasons for his attack and demanded to be given 50,000 dollars in order to leave the site in peace. However, Wilder refused the deal, threatening to kill Nana B if Davis kept bothering him. Thus, Davis decided to retreat, but not before his man Andre Compton secretly hacked into Wilder's phone.[4]

Kidnapping of Alex Wilder[]

"Alex, my man, you're about to find out who your father really is."
―Darius Davis to Alex Wilder[src]

Using data acquired from Geoffrey Wilder's phone, Davis tracked down Geoffrey's son Alex Wilder to the Timely Coffee, where he had his Crips kidnap him in retaliation for how Geoffrey had treated Davis. Davis, who confiscated Alex's phone, had his driver go to Nana B's residence and forced Alex to get out of the car. He then explained how he had taken the blame for the murder of Osiris, hoping that Geoffrey would be released from prison and look after Davis' family, and how he felt betrayed by his old friend. While he told his story, Davis remarked on how Alex did not seem shocked by his father's behavior.

Davis then used Alex's phone to call Geoffrey and demanded 1,000,000 dollars in exchange for Alex's life. They then went to a park and waited for Wilder to come. As Davis noticed that Alex and Andre Compton had got out of the car without him asking him to, they were attacked by Wilder and a couple of LAPD officers. In the ensuing gunfight during which Compton was wounded by Alex, Davis held Alex at gunpoint and threatened Geoffrey to kill him. He then got back in the car with his driver and Alex and drove away, confronting Alex about how he had shot Compton.

Noticing that his driver drove fast, Davis ordered him to slow down and to stop at a red light so that they would not draw attention. However, when the car attempted to move forward, it could not and Davis discovered that it was actually being stopped by Molly Hernandez and her superhuman strength. As Davis prepared to react, he was attacked by Karolina Dean who emitted light beams, distracting Davis long enough for Alex to join his fellow Runaways who had come to his rescue. Davis aimed at the teenagers with his guns, but Chase Stein joined the fight and fired at him with the Fistigons, knocking him several meters away. Angered by the Runaways' assaults, Davis fired at them. However, his bullets were blocked by a shield created by Nico Minoru's Staff of One. This caused Davis to flee out of fear of the teenagers and their strange abilities.[3]

Investigating the PRIDE Construction Site[]

Davis explains his ideas to Eldridge

"Almost 20 years I've been waiting to see what the hell old G's gonna do with this shit. I guess it's finally on."
―Darius Davis[src]

Intrigued by what could be happening on the PRIDE Construction Site managed by Geoffrey Wilder Construction Inc., Davis sent one of his men, Eldridge, to investigate the place by posing as a security officer. However, Eldridge later returned to Davis, explaining that all the workers hired by Wilder Construction had been dismissed and replaced by people affiliated to the Church of Gibborim. Davis saw in that the confirmation that PRIDE had a great project for the place and decided to stick around to see what it was about.

As the night approached, Davis shared a meal with his wife Tamar at Momo Korean Restaurant. Although Tamar warned him about the dangers of his investigation, reminding him of Andre Compton's disappearance, Darius remained determined to find out what was going on in the PRIDE Construction Site. Once Tamar left, Davis returned near the site and watched as the Runaways infiltrated the place.[5] Davis witnessed from afar their fight against Jonah and PRIDE, being surprised by the strange abilities displayed on both sides. He then left the construction site.[6]

New Alliance[]

Befriending Alex[]

"Well, you know what they say. The enemy of my enemy is my friend."

Davis was later contacted by Alex Wilder, who was leading the Runaways into hiding after their confrontation with PRIDE. Once they met Wilder explained that they were both enemies of PRIDE, meaning that they could forge an alliance. Davis agreed to that and provided Wilder with money and a gun before leaving.[6]

Davis was met by Wilder the next day, who explained that the money was stolen. Davis said that that was the reason he gave Wilder a gun. Wilder said he would do anything for more money. Davis asked if he had the gun. Wilder pulled it out and Davis took it explaining that Wilder's fingerprints were now on that gun, which was also the gun used in a crime, so he could have lineage.

Davis then dressed Wilder up in a poncho, saying he did not want Wilder's clothes to get wrecked. He then brought wilder up the stairs of his home with a drill, making Wilder think he had to murder somebody. However, he tricked him and simply told Wilder that he needed to paint to room for Tamar's child coming soon. Wilder did so and painted it seafoam green. When Tamar arrived, she argued, saying she wanted robin's egg blue, making Wilder do it over. Downstairs, Tamar said she did not want Davis involved with Wilder as he was wanted, but Davis said he needed him.[1]

Wilder showed up the next day, wanting work. Davis told Wilder that he did not ask him to come, thinking there was an ulterior motive. Wilder said he wanted to work on the old computer in the garage, but Davis figured he was there for Livvie. Davis let Wilder in and had him pick up boxes, but said there was no price and it was just volunteer. Wilder said that was fine. They then had dinner together and Wilder talked to Livvie before leaving. Davis called Geoffrey Wilder and told him that he had Alex.[7]

Finally Getting the Deed[]

The next day, Davis tasked Alex Wilder with getting an item for him from a bartender. When Wilder returned, they played dominos together, just like Davis and Geoffrey Wilder used to do. Davis then tricked Wilder and beat him, saying that he sometimes had to sacrifice a five for a ten. Later, Davis saw Wilder kissing Livvie and called him over to do another run. However, he was lying to Wilder and actually bringing him to his parents.

They talked about Wilder's relationship with Livvie and Davis made sure to tell Wilder to take it slow. Once they got to the warehouse, Wilder walked in, but found his dad. Davis walked up behind him to make sure Alex did not run away. Davis apologized to Alex, but said it was just the way it had to be. When Alex was put in the car, Davis asked for his payment. Geoffrey gave him the deed to the construction site, just like what he promised twenty years ago. Geoffrey said Davis could sell it and start a new life, but Davis planned to build it up. Geoffrey also gave him a hotel key to the Gordon Hotel.[2]

Death[]

Davis happily arrived at the Gordon Hotel and texted Tamar, saying she needed to meet him there. He walked into his room and took a bite of food, glad that he was there and complimenting his old friend. He walked into the room to find Catherine Wilder. He asked what legal things he had to sign and said Geoffrey Wilder claimed it was all set. He then said he believed Alex Wilder to be safer with them. Catherine said that she was not there for legal problems. She then raised a gun, saying that she needed someone to blame for the murder of Destiny Gonzalez. She then promptly murdered Davis. Davis fell backwards at the gunshots and into his tub.[2]

Personality[]

"You can't play your game if you're in your feelings. Gotta keep your eyes open. Stay woke."
―Darius Davis to Alex Wilder[src]

Being the leader of a criminal gang known as the Crips made Davis a brutal and violent individual. His violation of law went as a far as to kidnap a teenager, Alex Wilder, and to try to shoot the Runaways who were trying to stop him without question, aiming at them with his guns. Davis' main objective was to get revenge on Geoffrey Wilder, who he felt had betrayed him, and was willing to do anything to accomplish his goals.

Davis also displayed a more humble side, as he recognized that he was not as skilled as Wilder in his management of the Crips and their ties.

Abilities[]

  • Marksman: Darius Davis is skilled in using firearms, and is somewhat accurate in his shooting. When dual-wielding a pair of pistols against the Runaways, Nico Minoru's force-field inhibited the bullets he fired, showing they would have accurately hit them.
"See, the key to this whole thing-- no, matter of fact, the key to everything-- is anticipation. You gotta make 'em play your game. Study the layout. Stay on guard, like you're playing defense. Protect yourself. There's only one way to figure out your enemy... and that's close observation over a prolonged period."
―Darius Davis to Alex Wilder[src]
  • Tactician: Geoffrey Wilder could not beat Davis in a game of bones in their youth (although Wilder claimed that he actually let Davis win). As the leader of the Crips, Davis was very keen and observant of his enemies.

Equipment[]

Weapons[]

"Hold it right, as if you were gonna use it."
―Darius Davis to Alex Wilder[src]
  • Rock Island Armory 1911: Davis carried this handgun when he led the Crips to the PRIDE Construction Site in order to force the foreman and workers out of the place, and lure Geoffrey Wilder to the site, in order to secretly download his files from his phone.
  • Beretta 92FS Inox: Davis used this handgun to kidnap Alex Wilder at gunpoint, and then to shoot Geoffrey Wilder and his men when he went to rescue his son. He used it to kidnap Alex again after the rescue attempt and then dual-wielded it with another handgun when Alex's friends came to rescue him. However, the bullets were stopped by Nico Minoru using the Staff of One.
  • Beretta 92F/FS: Darius Davis dual-wielded this handgun with another when Alex Wilder's friends came to rescue him. However, the bullets were stopped by Nico Minoru using the Staff of One.
  • Glock 17: Davis used this handgun during the robbery of a liquor store where the owner got killed. In order to have leverage, Davis gave this handgun to Alex Wilder when he ran away from his parents, with the excuse of protecting himself when he was on the streets. However, it was a trick to plant Wilder's prints on it, in order to have an insurance in case he betrayed Davis, and Davis kept the gun just in case.
