- "Because when people like you run into those walls, you should have someone there to pick you back up."
- ―Daniel Sousa to Daisy Johnson[src]
Agent Daniel Jordan Sousa is a United States Army veteran who became a Strategic Scientific Reserve agent after losing a leg during World War II. Eventually, Sousa became a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and served as the agency's West Coast Security Chief, while his relationship with Peggy Carter ended. While Sousa began to suspect that S.H.I.E.L.D. had been infiltrated by Hydra, he had visited Area 51, where he encountered a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents from the future who were trying to prevent the Chronicoms from completely wiping S.H.I.E.L.D. from history so they could take Earth for themselves.
The team faked Sousa's demise to save him from Hydra, and he joined them in their time-traveling mission to stop the Chronicoms, where he developed a relationship with Daisy Johnson. He eventually traveled to the original timeline where they managed to finally defeat the Chronicoms, and set off to explore the universe with Johnson as they traveled through space on Zephyr Three.
Biography[]
S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent[]
Investigating Hydra's Infiltration[]
- "Because if S.H.I.E.L.D. has been infiltrated with sleepers post-World War II, we need to root it out right now, before it takes hold."
- ―Daniel Sousa to Daisy Johnson[src]
Sousa as a chief S.H.I.E.L.D. agent
A former chief of the Strategic Scientific Reserve, Daniel Sousa was recruited into S.H.I.E.L.D. and became its West Coast Security Chief. Sousa discovered that there were sleeper agents in the organization who had joined in the aftermath of World War II, and believed the infiltrators to be members of Hydra. He sent a report to the CIA regarding his suspicions, although his allegations were ignored.[7] Under the assumption that Hydra had only infiltrated the fringes, Sousa felt it safe to inform his commanding officer, Wilfred Malick, unaware that Malick was a high ranking Hydra member himself.[1]
Encountering the Future[]
Mission into Area 51[]
Sousa is told about Peggy Carter's arrival
- "I gotta say, I've waited a long time to meet the famous Agent Carter. But I'm surprised to find you here, running a security op in our little patch of desert."
"I apologize for the short notice, but we had to act quickly. I believe this base may have been infiltrated."
"No. Imagine that. An infiltrator, right under our noses." - ―Daniel Sousa and Jemma Simmons[src]
On July 21, 1955, Sousa flew from Los Angeles to Nevada in order to retrieve a device from Dr. Niles Lindmore at Area 51, having been tasked with delivering the device to Howard Stark's contact at the Hotel Roosevelt.[1] As West Coast Security Chief, Sousa also planned to supervise the testing of Project Helius. However, upon arriving, Sousa was informed that a British S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who outranked them all was inside the base. Stopping in his tracks, Sousa asked the MP if he knew the woman's identity, and the MP responded that it was Agent Peggy Carter.
Sousa confronting one of the infiltrators
Preparing to reunite with Carter, Sousa fixed himself up so he would look good, but he discovered that the woman was not Carter at all. Sousa kept the ruse going, pretending that he had never met Carter before, and the imposter stated that there had been an infiltration in the base, which Sousa found ironic. The woman asked for his name, and when Sousa revealed where he came from, she figured out who he was and his connection to Carter, and he arrested her, as well as a man pretending to be Gerald Sharpe, who was interrogating people at the VIP guests' bus.
Sousa meeting Daisy Johnson in his office
Sousa demanded to know how the base was infiltrated, and discovered a woman in his office, who said she was from the CIA and revealed she knew about the infiltration, as well as his past. Sousa believed her, and asked if she had come because of his report about sleepers inside of S.H.I.E.L.D., which she claimed that the people he locked up would prove his theory right. Sousa allowed her to see the prisoners, but when he opened the cell to let them out, he was locked inside.
Sousa stands over a collapsed Phil Coulson
Sousa was eventually let out of the cell, and he found Coulson fighting a scientist so he pointed his gun and told them to stop fighting. When he was ignored, Sousa hit the scientist with his cane, but it had no effect, and he was then attacked by the scientist, who began to choke him. Suddenly, the scientist collapsed and melted, which confused Sousa. He then went over to Coulson, who also collapsed, and looked at him, wondering aloud if he was actually one of the good guys.[7]
Mission with Phil Coulson[]
Sousa personally interrogating Phil Coulson
- "The agent's life... must be exciting."
"It fills the days. Lot of threats out there."
"Russians."
"And others. Lying low, biding time." - ―Phil Coulson and Daniel Sousa[src]
As Sousa had Phil Coulson handcuffed to a table and waited for him to wake up, he made a call, talking about how his contact, Niles Lindmore was a hostile. Coulson came to, and Sousa demanded his name, but Coulson responded that he was Sousa's contact. Sousa was skeptical of this due to what he had witnessed, but when Coulson mentioned Howard Stark, Sousa believed him, and asked about the package, which Coulson did not have.
Sousa and Phil Coulson discuss their lives
Coulson told Sousa that he would get the package to him, but that he would also be joining him on the mission. So, Sousa and Coulson boarded a train heading to Los Angeles, where they were yet to receive the package from Coulson's contact. Sousa grew impatient, but Coulson eventually pointed out his contact and grabbed a briefcase. During the ride, Coulson talked Sousa about life as an agent and how it took over their personal life. Sousa wanted to see inside the briefcase, but Coulson said it was for Stark to see only, and they talked about him, with Sousa expressing his feelings towards the man.
Sousa went to get a drink from the bar, and there he was approached by a woman who began flirting with him, so he decided to engage with her, knowing it was an act. Sousa noticed as the car was emptied out, and he revealed to the woman he was onto her. She told him to come quietly, but Sousa decided to fight off the two men that surrounded him. However, Sousa found himself overwhelmed, but was saved when Daisy Johnson and Alphonso Mackenzie arrived, and told him that they had the package.
Sousa being brought on board Zephyr One
They decided to bring him to where the package was being kept, which Sousa discovered meant exiting the train into a plane that was above it, and flying to a bigger plane, all which amazed him as he had never seen anything like it. Sousa was still kept in the dark about who all of them were with, and when he came aboard Zephyr One he was reunited with the woman pretending to be Peggy Carter. After meeting Melinda May, Sousa demanded that the package be handed over to him.
Sousa learns his Hydra theory is correct
They showed Sousa the device, which he was less impressed with compared to the Zephyr. Coulson then asked Sousa about who may have captured Deke Shaw, which they thought was the Russians, but Sousa voiced his theory about Hydra being inside of S.H.I.E.L.D. Sousa was shocked to learn that not only was he right, but that the others knew it. Coulson then brought up Wilfred Malick, who they figured out was behind the attack.
Sousa is incapacitated by Phil Coulson
Sousa then sat with the new revelations about Malick by in Hydra, and Johnson told him that wasn't able to act on it, which frustrated him, as he was willing to die to bring an end to Hydra. Johnson was called away by Mackenzie, and while alone, Sousa was determined to make his delivery, so he stole a motorcycle and left the Zephyr. Sousa arrived at the Hotel Roosevelt, and successfully made the delivery. However, Sousa was intercepted by Coulson and Mackenzie, who shot him with an I.C.E.R.[1]
Joining Future S.H.I.E.L.D.[]
Sousa is recruited to the future S.H.I.E.L.D.
- "Future S.H.I.E.L.D. We're in a fight against body-snatching robots from another planet who want to wipe us out and take the Earth. The melting man you saw was one of them."
"Why didn't you lead with that?" - ―Phil Coulson and Daniel Sousa[src]
Sousa awoke back on Zephyr One and was greeted by Coulson, who revealed he shot him with an I.C.E.R., which hadn't been invented yet, as he explained that they were with S.H.I.E.L.D. from the future, and that they were in the middle of a war with alien robots trying to take over Earth. Sousa felt that Coulson should have told him from the start, but Coulson said they weren't sure how to handle his situation, informing Sousa of his death and how they pulled him from history.
Sousa learns they have traveled to 1973
Sousa and Coulson continued talking as they walked through the Zephyr, and he figured out the plan was how they time traveled and that they were no longer in 1955. Sousa then enquired about what time they had jumped to, and after listening to the radio, the agents heard a song play which confused Sousa, having not heard anything like it before. They were able to figure out that the year they had traveled to was 1973, and Sousa was now a part of the team.[1]
Adapting to 1973[]
Sousa decides to keep his 1950s clothing
- "What if you always plucked me out of time? Does that mean I always survive? And if we end up in your present, will we even be in the same timeline?"
"I'd stop thinking about it. Your brains will spill out." - ―Daniel Sousa and Daisy Johnson[src]
The team went to retrieve Enoch from The Krazy Kanoe, so Sousa joined Phil Coulson, Melinda May and Daisy Johnson, and they went to acquire time appropriate clothing. However, Sousa did not care for the new fashion, so he stuck with his suit from the 1950s, and remarked about the changes around him.
Sousa attempting to embrace the 1970s
Sousa then began to wonder about the nature of his death, asking if he never actually died because S.H.I.E.L.D. always pulled him from time. He then questioned whether if they return to their present would it even still be their original timeline. However, he was advised not to think about it, and Coulson suggested him staying in Zephyr One, but Sousa was determined to embrace the mission as well as the new time period. They then headed to The Krazy Kanoe, and Sousa recounted how he had been there only a few times.[8]
Visiting The Krazy Kanoe[]
Sousa learns that Wilfred Malick is still alive
- "The timeline is already broken. So I died for nothing."
"You look alive to me."
"But maybe you should've left me. I could've stopped Hydra back then." - ―Daniel Sousa and Phil Coulson[src]
The four entered The Krazy Kanoe and discovered that a party was currently being held. Sousa and Phil Coulson wondered what the celebration was for, but they spotted Rick Stoner, who introduced Wilfred Malick, who was supposed to be dead at this point in the timeline.
Sousa and Coulson discuss Project Insight
Malick gave a speech, announcing the launch of Project Insight, which Sousa noticed Coulson was familiar with, as he revealed that Hydra's plans were forty years ahead. Sousa and Coulson then talked about the Hydra infestation within S.H.I.E.L.D. and how no one realized the true nature of Project Insight. Coulson revealed that Hydra being ahead was due to the Chronicoms, making Sousa wish he had stayed in his time to stop it, but Coulson stated it would not have worked.
Sousa posing as Daisy Johnson's fiancée
They decided to split up to get intel and keep searching for Enoch, and Coulson reminded Sousa to keep a low profile, as he was famous amongst the agents. When Sousa noticed Daisy Johnson being pestered by Gideon Malick, he stepped in to help her, pretending to be Johnson's fiancée. This got Gideon to back off, and as they walked away, Sousa stared down Gideon. Johnson informed Sousa about more changes to the timeline, and that she discovered where they could learn more about Project Insight.
Sousa learning more about Project Insight
Johnson showed Sousa to a secret room, which they figured was Malick's base of operations. Johnson began hacking into the computer, which Sousa didn't understand, and they discovered the targets for Project Insight, including Bruce Banner. Johnson explained to Sousa who that was, and how he was only a child currently, so Hydra planned to kill good people before they could be a threat to them. Sousa felt that the timeline was only being made worse, deducing that the Chronicoms gave Hydra knowledge of the future.
Sousa holding Nathaniel Malick hostage
The agents went to leave, but Coulson and Melinda May were caught by Malick and surrounded by Chronicoms, so Johnson and Sousa took Nathaniel Malick hostage, allowing the agents to escape. As they ran, Sousa questioned S.H.I.E.L.D.'s morality by taking hostages, and wondered what else was being kept from him. And at that moment, Johnson revealed to him she had powers. Needing a way to get away from the Chronicoms, they were saved when Enoch pulled up in a car and drove them back to Zephyr One.[8]
Traveling to 1976[]
Sousa alerts the team of the Time Window
- "Three years. How the hell did we just jump three more years?"
"I told you, I don't know. We can't control it."
"Well, who does?!" - ―Daniel Sousa and Jemma Simmons[src]
The team regrouped on Zephyr One and explained the situation with Wilfred Malick using Project Insight to wipe out S.H.I.E.L.D., which included Peggy Carter, as pointed out by Sousa. As the team discussed this, Sousa noticed the Time Window closing, and they discovered that they were about to jump through time early.
Sousa becomes angry about the time jump
They figured out that they had jumped three years forward to 1976, which made Sousa confused and mad due to the uncertainty of the mission he was forced into. Knowing Jemma Simmons was in charge of time travel, Sousa went to confront her as to why they jumped. Simmons tried to explain that it wasn't something they could fully know, but this made Sousa more mad, so Deke Shaw stepped in. Sousa stated that lives were at stake and that he was pulled from his for the mission, but Shaw reminded him it was the same for the whole team.
Sousa is amazed by Daisy Johnson's phone
Alphonso Mackenzie announced that it was the day of Project Insight's launch and they needed to stop it, so Sousa joined Johnson to hack into the security system. When they arrived, Sousa brought up Johnson's powers and expressed staying behind in 1976 after the mission, but Johnson assured him they were just having a setback. They then talked about modern technology, with Johnson showing Sousa her phone, which amazed him, but then made him sad about missing out on so much time and not getting to say some goodbyes.[8]
Kidnapped by Nathaniel Malick[]
Sousa and Daisy Johnson are captured
- "We are going home, Agent Johnson. You hear me? We're going home. But you have got to fight. Plenty of fight left in ya after all."
- ―Daniel Sousa to Daisy Johnson[src]
As Daisy Johnson proceeded to assist Phil Coulson and Melinda May through the Lighthouse, she asked Sousa to help open a panel for her. At that moment, Nathaniel Malick ambushed them, knocking them out with a Chronicom Rifle. Malick then put their unconscious bodies into his truck and drove away.[8]
Sousa learns about Nathaniel Malick's plan
Upon waking up, Sousa and Johnson discovered that they could barley move their bodies, due to being drugged, which Sousa compared to being in a field hospital, a story Johnson wanted to hear once she had recovered. Nathaniel Malick entered the room and revealed that he captured the two of them because he was interested in them, which aggravated Sousa, who tried to attack Malick by was too weak. Malick then brought up how Sousa hadn't aged, which made him believe he was an Inhuman, leading to how he wanted to know more about them, mentioning the research of Werner Reinhardt, who Sousa was familiar with.
Sousa comforting a weak Daisy Johnson
Malick took Johnson to begin his experiment, and Sousa tried to see what was happening in the other room she was brought to. When they returned, Sousa asked Malick what he did to Johnson, so he explained that he took her blood, spinal fluid and some glands, which he was going to transfer to himself. Malick left, and Sousa checked on Johnson, who said that this had happened before. Seeing that Johnson was in a terrible condition, Sousa tried to comfort her by telling her the story of how a fellow soldier stayed by his side after his injury, assuring him that they were going to go home. Sousa then carried on the gesture, telling Johnson that they would get free and return to the team.
Sousa carries Daisy Johnson as they leave
Johnson then revealed to Sousa a shard of glass in her hand, which he took out, giving him a chance to plan their escape. When one of Malick's goons went to retrieve Sousa, he stabbed the man with the glass and knocked him out. Sousa then picked up a passed out Johnson and went to leave. They were briefly stopped by Malick, who was struggling to control Johnson's powers, and ended up knocking himself out. Sousa then proceeded to escape, getting Johnson back to Zephyr One to be treated, and he decided to stay with the team.[2]
Jumping Through Time[]
Sousa waits for the rescue team to return
- "That means a jump within a jump, which leads to... Honestly, I have no idea."
"Finally, the scientist from the future and I are on the same page." - ―Jemma Simmons and Daniel Sousa[src]
However, Zephyr One began making unexpected and frequent jumps through time, resulting in Alphonso Mackenzie and Deke Shaw being stranded in 1982, so Melinda May and Yo-Yo Rodriguez went to retrieve them as the Zephyr made another jump. Sousa asked Jemma Simmons if she was worried they'd lose May and Rodriguez, too, but Simmons was confident in her maths.
Sousa learns about the random time jumps
When the whole team was back on the Zephyr, Simmons explained the situation, in which they would continue jumping through time until they collapse into a space-time singularity in two days, but for them would be 20 minutes. However, Simmons stated that she didn't really understand it, which Sousa made a comment about finally being on the same page as the scientist from the future. They discovered that a pulse was stopping them from reaching the Time Drive, and that Rodriguez's powers could solve it, so Sousa wondered what they were.
Sousa decides to prepare for an evacuation
While Rodriguez and May left for Afterlife, the rest of the team stayed in the Zephyr as it continued to jump through time. Sousa helped Shaw work on a way to shut down the Time Drive, and when Shaw warned Sousa about electricity, he reminded Shaw he wasn't a neanderthal. They failed to turn off the Time Drive, so Sousa went to prepare for them needing to abandon the ship. Sousa passed by Simmons, Daisy Johnson and Phil Coulson, and told them he was going to ready the parachutes.
Sousa is given an advanced prosthetic leg
Sousa started laying out the parachutes in the hangar, where he was joined by Simmons. Sousa explained that he used to be a paratrooper and liked to be prepared, so he asked if Simmons had ever jumped out of a plane before, which she told him she had twice, but only once with a parachute, which confused Sousa. Simmons then presented Sousa with an advanced prosthetic leg in case they did become stranded. Sousa was grateful, and apologized for how he treated her in the 1970s, but she understood.
Sousa sits with Daisy Johnson as she heals
When the time came for May and Rodriguez to return to the Zephyr, the team awaited for the arrival. With time running out, Sousa reminded Mackenzie that he had the parachutes ready, and Mackenzie decided to abandon ship. However, the Quinjet docked, but Rodriguez's mission failed, so they continued with the evacuation. However, Rodriguez was able to regain her powers and shut off the Time Drive, saving the Zephyr. With everything fine, Johnson returned to the Healing Pod and Sousa sat with her.[9]
Stuck in a Time-Loop[]
Sousa at the beginning of the time loop
- "Uh, well, believe it or not, I am stuck in a time loop, and I'm running out of ways to save us all."
"Okay. How can I help?" - ―Daisy Johnson and Daniel Sousa[src]
After the Time Drive caused Zephyr One to jump within a jump, tearing a hole in space-time, the team found themselves trapped in a time storm. Sousa fell asleep and was awoken when Daisy Johnson exited the Healing Pod, asking how long he had been sitting there. She asked if they had jumped, but Sousa did not know, so Johnson went to the bridge. Sousa followed, and learned from Alphonso Mackenzie and Melinda May that the Time Drive overloaded.
Sousa helps a blinded Alphonso Mackenzie
Witnessing all of the chaos around him, Sousa expressed his preference to have stayed asleep. Deke Shaw joined them and revealed that they were in a time storm which was pulling them into a vortex, which would cause them to cease to have ever existed if they fell in. Mackenzie was blinded by a radiation flare, so Sousa and Johnson brought him to Jemma Simmons to be treated. Simmons pulled one of Shaw's cologne bottles out of a draw, and Sousa did not care for the scent. The Time Drive then caused a feedback, propelling the team into a time-loop.
Sousa learning that they are in a time loop
In the next loop, when Sousa followed Johnson onto the bridge, she confused the team by knowing exactly what they were about to say. Johnson went to see Simmons, so Sousa followed her, listening as she revealed that she was stuck in a time-loop, which he found creepy as she proceeded to predict things before they happened. For most of the loops, Johnson let Sousa sleep. After several loops the same as the original ones, Sousa woke up to find Johnson gone. He found her in the lab, and she informed him of the time-loops and the potential sabotage to the implant remover.
Sousa is mysteriously murdered
Sousa asked if there was ever a day when something weird didn't happen, and as Johnson went to pick up the device, Sousa stopped her, believing it was a trap. Understanding that Johnson dying would mean her memory would reset in the next loop and she would have to relearn everything all over again, Sousa decided to pick it up, knowing that if he died he would just reset in the next loop like normal. Initially nothing happened, but Sousa was then shot with something, causing him to bleed out of his mouth and die.
Sousa attempts to keep Enoch distracted
A few loops later, when Sousa asked what Johnson was doing out of the Healing Pod, she responded by asking why did he care, which he explained was because she didn't. In the next loop, Johnson enlisted Sousa's help to distract Enoch so they could get the implant out of Simmons. Sousa cut off Enoch in the hangar, asking about when lunch was served on Zephyr One. Enoch tried to move past him, but Sousa stopped him. Enoch caught on to Sousa's intentions, and tied his hands together, and stopped the implant from being removed.
The team are defeated trying to stop Enoch
In another loop, Sousa was once again asked to help stop Enoch from his programming taking over and preventing them from removing the implant out of Simmons, and all the agents confronted the Chronicom in the hangar. However, despite outnumbering him, Enoch managed to fight off and defeat all of the agents, leaving them all unable to move. Talking amongst themselves, Sousa wondered where Enoch got all of the weapons he used from, as he was not carrying any on his person beforehand.
Sousa tells Daisy Johnson why he helps her
In the next loop, when Sousa asked Johnson what she was doing up, she instantly informed him about the time-loop and that she was running out of ways to save them all from dying. Without hesitation, Sousa asked how he could help. Johnson decided to take a seat and ask Sousa about processing the time-loop and why he was always ready to help every time. Sousa then explained how he knew the type of person Johnson was and that she should have someone to support her, which he wanted to be, implying that he liked her.
Sousa and the others about to fight Enoch
With that expressed, Sousa then asked how he could help Johnson with her problem, so she got him trick Enoch by pretending to be the one removing the implant from Simmons. Sousa walked away from Simmons, and Enoch followed him, overhearing his plan, saying the implant could not be removed. Sousa stated that he wouldn't be removing it, as they entered a room with Mackenzie, May and Yo-Yo Rodriguez. They locked themselves in with Enoch, planning to fight him while the others removed the implant.
Sousa and Daisy Johnson sharing a kiss
The loop reset before the plan was a success, so in the next loop Johnson went to fill in Sousa again. But as he genuinely asked how he could help her, Johnson decided to kiss him, and he kissed her back. Johnson said that it was nice, and then told him they had to trap a space robot. They then ran through the plan again, locking Enoch in the room and fighting him off as the implant was successfully removed. They discovered Enoch was the key to escaping the time storm, and he sacrificed himself to save the rest of the team.[5]
Supporting Daisy Johnson[]
Sousa being chivalrous to Daisy Johnson
- "You got a rare opportunity here. I got a list of people long gone by now I'd... I'd do anything to have one last stolen moment with. Regardless of what space-time has to say about it."
- ―Daniel Sousa to Daisy Johnson[src]
Returning to 1983, the team decided to make base at the Lighthouse, which Sousa was amazed by. Sousa followed Daisy Johnson and Jemma Simmons, who did not share his awe of the base, having spent a lot of time in it already. Simmons explained why the Time Window didn't start counting down again, but Sousa found himself once again bewildered by what she was saying. Sousa decided to get some rest, and chivalrously carried Johnson's bags for her.
Sousa tells Daisy Johnson to talk to Jiaying
When Sousa woke up, he was filled in by Alphonso Mackenzie about their situation, so he went to check on Johnson, revealing that she mentioned Jiaying's name when Nathaniel Malick captured them. Johnson explained how in the original timeline, Hydra tortured and experimented on Jiaying and it ended with things going bad with her and Jiaying. Sousa suggested that Johnson use the opportunity to make things better with her mother. But Johnson was worried about the timeline, so Sousa reminded her that it was already ruined, with him being pulled from time as just one of the examples.
Sousa reveals Daisy Johnson is Inhuman
Sousa expressed how he would like the chance to have one last moment with some people, and that if Johnson needed to be bailed out from her talk with Jiaying, he would be there for her. Johnson remarked on how much of a square Sousa was, which he agreed with. They went to Jiaying and told her they hadn't heard anything about the mission to Afterlife. Jiaying began voicing her regret trusting them and how they knew nothing of Afterlife, but Sousa stated that Johnson had been there before, revealing that she was also an Inhuman. Once Johnson revealed they're from the future, she began connecting with Jiaying, so Sousa decided to leave them.[10]
Rescue Mission[]
Sousa watches Jemma Simmons be taken
- "I would never hurt her."
"Imagine that. The man out of time and Quake. Just like a damn comic book." - ―Daniel Sousa and Alphonso Mackenzie[src]
Sousa was informed by Melinda May about Nathaniel Malick infiltrating the Lighthouse with John Garrett, so he regrouped with Jemma Simmons. As they walked, Sousa asked who Garret was, but at that moment, Simmons was grabbed by Garrett. Simmons told Sousa to shoot Garrett, but he teleported away before Sousa began opening fire.[10]
Sousa hears Kora want to become an agent
Sousa and May were joined by Daisy Johnson, and they watched as Zephyr One disappeared from their detection. Sousa wondered if it made a jump through time, but Johnson clarified that it left the atmosphere. When Yo-Yo Rodriguez radioed in their return, the three rushed down to speak with Kora, who they discussed was in an unstable state, making Sousa wonder what they would do if she became volatile. Upon seeing Kora, Sousa watched as Johnson attacked her sister, who claimed that she wanted to become an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Sousa is questioned about leaving his post
Later on, Sousa found Johnson dressed differently and asked if she was going somewhere. Johnson told him to not try and help her, but he felt that she needed backup. Sousa told Johnson that he learned to never let someone do something stupid on their own when he was in the Boy Scouts, which then made her question if he had ever left his post before to have fun. Responding that he had never done that, Johnson told him this would be his first time leaving his post, and invited him to join her on her mission.
Sousa and Daisy Johnson inside the Quinjet
They boarded the Quinjet, and when Sousa brought up how it wasn't able to travel far in space, Johnson said that they needed to act unpredictably in order to best Sibyl, which for Sousa was leaving his post. Johnson then revealed that Sibyl expected her to want to save Kora, when instead, she was going to rescue Simmons. Johnson explained the plan to reach the Zephyr, but Sousa realized that she did not know how to fly the Quinjet, although it didn't sway him from wanting to help her with the mission.
Sousa is in complete awe looking at space
Alphonso Mackenzie entered the Quinjet, and gave them authorization to take off, deciding to come with them on the mission. Sousa gave Mackenzie's his seat in the cockpit, and they departed from the Lighthouse. Once they exited the Earth's atmosphere, Sousa began to float upwards, so Mackenzie turned on the artificial gravity. Sousa then looked out the window and was in complete awe when he saw their planet from space. Sousa returned to his seat as Johnson and Mackenzie began their lock onto the Zephyr, which they only had one shot had.
Sousa told about Daisy Johnson's feelings
As they floated in space, Sousa sat in the cockpit and just looked at space in amazement. As the others rested, Sousa couldn't help but express how he had dreamt of going to space. Mackenzie asked Sousa what his intentions were with Johnson, which he was confused about. Mackenzie clarified that Johnson had feelings for him, but she had been hurt in the past, so Sousa assured him he wouldn't hurt her. Mackenzie then revealed that Johnson's superhero name was Quake, which Sousa found hilarious, and they both laughed.
Sousa and Quake flirting with each other
As they approached the Zephyr and got ready for the upcoming fight, Johnson thanked Sousa for being with her on the mission. Sousa then playfully teased Johnson by repeatedly calling her Quake, which she was initially confused about but the two then began flirting with each other. They then witnessed a fleet of Chronicom Destroyer Ships arrive, which they realized was why Malick went to space. They then watched helplessly as the ships fired lasers towards Earth, destroying the S.H.I.E.L.D. facilities.[11]
The rescue team wait for the fight to start
Despite the Chronicom's attacks, the rescue mission proceeded, as the Quinjet had not been detected. They successfully docked onto the Zephyr, which was then locked on to by the main Chronicom ship and brought the ship inside. Suspecting that their presence had been noticed, Sousa, Quake and Mackenzie armed themselves and waited for the enemy to come for them. However, when nothing happened, Sousa wondered if the enemies were on the other side doing the exact same thing, so they opened the door to find no one there.
Sousa and Quake have their first proper kiss
Without dropping their guard, the team silently searched the Zephyr for any of Nathaniel Malick's crew, but discovered the ship was empty. The Zephyr was then taken back by S.H.I.E.L.D., which they used. to scan the Chronicom ship to find Simmons and Deke Shaw. After locating Simmons and Shaw, Quake went to rescue them alone, but before she left, Sousa kissed her, much to Quake's delight. Sousa stayed to open the hangar door with Mackenzie, who voiced his impressment for Sousa making his move on Johnson.
Sousa watches the missiles have no effect
Sibyl revealed her awareness of the team's presence and told them that the S.H.I.E.L.D. bases had been destroyed and that they had lost. Sousa and Mackenzie discussed this information, hoping it was not true. Sousa still felt that they had to ensure that there was an escape for when Quake, Simmons and Shaw return. Mackenzie agreed with Sousa and he decided to blow up the hangar doors, but Sousa watched as the missiles created no damage, making him ask what else they had in their arsenal to get the doors opened.
Sousa and Alphonso Mackenzie get down
They moved to the cargo bay, where Sousa noticed Mackenzie had grabbed a small weapon, making him question if it would be effective. Mackenzie commented that for the circumstance Sousa has found himself in since being pulled from his timeline, he was managing well enough. A group of Chronicoms approached them, so Mackenzie used the weapon, which defeated all of the Chronicoms. Sousa asked if they had any more of the weapon, but that was the last, so they just had to hold their position for when the others returned.
Sousa suggests that they build a big bomb
As Sousa and Mackenzie grabbed the Chronicoms' rifles and built cover for themselves, they talked about their limited supply of ammunition. Sousa sarcastically described the situation as "peachy," which Mackenzie thought was a weird choice of words, but assured Sousa that he was a good man. Looking to do more damage to the Chronicoms, Sousa remembered how one of them used itself as a bomb to almost destroy Area 51, so it made him come up with an idea to rig the six Chronicoms they killed as bombs.
Mackenzie hooked up the Chronicoms to the Gravitonium drive and the Time Drive to create the biggest explosion possible. They were reunited with Simmons and Shaw, and Shaw informed Mackenzie that Simmons' memories had been messed with. When Shaw told them Quake told them not to wait for her, Sousa went to go after her, but Mackenzie stopped him. Instead, they strapped the Chronicoms to the ship's missiles. Once Quake returned, they blew up the hangar doors and headed back to Earth.[3]
Leaving the Timeline[]
Sousa witnessing the arrival of Leo Fitz
Receiving a coded message to go to The Krazy Kanoe, the team landed and entered the bar, where they were reunited with the rest of their team. As they discussed their next step, they all noticed Simmons assembling the O-8-4s. The team gathered around Simmons and watched her put the pieces together, which opened up a secret room in the bar with a machine inside of it. The machine was created a portal, and Leo Fitz came out of it.[3]
Sousa being spared from staying behind
Sousa kept silent as the team reunited with Fitz, and voiced their frustration for throwing them into the mission blind. Fitz revealed that Kora was the key to saving their world, but they informed him that she was still with Nathaniel Malick. Fitz explained how they could return to their timeline through the Quantum Realm, but when Deke Shaw had the idea to take the Chronicoms with them, it meant one of them would have to stay behind. Upon hearing that this was the last time the team would be in the same room together, Sousa immediately volunteered to stay behind. Sousa began saying his goodbyes to the team, but was cut off by Shaw, who decided to stay instead, allowing them to leave the timeline in Zephyr One.[12]
Retaking the Lighthouse[]
Sousa tasked with helping the ground team
While traveling through the Quantum Realm, Sousa was informed by Phil Coulson that he and Yo-Yo Rodriguez would help Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons retake the Lighthouse. But before that, they had to put on hazmat suits and revisit the Temple of the Forgotten to assist the past Simmons, as a part of the predestination paradox they were in.
Sousa extracting a piece of the Time Di'Alla
The ground team entered the Quinjet, and headed for the temple, landing near the past Zephyr One, where they were all greeted by the past Simmons and Enoch. Making sure not to engage with their past selves, the four followed the past Simmons into the temple, with Sousa being assisted by Rodriguez as he extracted a sample of the Time Di'Alla. Once they were finished, they returned to the Quinjet and watched as the temple was destroyed right after their past selves traveled back in time.
Sousa finds himself unable to help Leo Fitz
With the casual loop dealt with, the team made their way to the Lighthouse to reclaim it from the Chronicom Hunters that were occupying it. Once inside, Rodriguez cleared the path from them, taking out a few of the Hunters, allowing them to reach the control room. Rodriguez gave Sousa one of the Chronicom Rifles after using her powers to steal them, leading him to find out what her powers were. Sousa asked Fitz if he could help in any way, but after hearing more advanced scientific words, Sousa realized he couldn't.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. team ultimately win the war
While Fitz worked, Sousa and Rodriguez told each other not to worry so much about their respective partners. The Hunters attempted to breach the control room, so once they completed their part of the mission, they all took cover, hoping that the team onboard the Chronicom ship would be successful and complete their mission before the Hunters would get to them. Soon, the Hunters entered the control room, but were stopped when the combined powers of Melinda May and Kora reprogrammed them to feel empathy, no longer making them enemies.[12]
The Astro Ambassadors[]
A New Adventure[]
Sousa reading Cosmos at the Zephyr Three
- "We're just loving the journey together. I showed him E.T. to prep for it, so... He cried like a baby. Um, but, he's made for this work. He's solid. But he does keep calling us the 'Astro Ambassadors.'"
- ―Daisy Johnson to Jemma Simmons[src]
With the Chronicom Colonization of Earth over, Sousa continued his romantic relationship with Daisy Johnson, now living in her timeline, even further in the future for him. Despite the significant displacement, Sousa was eager to join Johnson on her mission exploring deep space on board Zephyr Three with Kora. To prepare for the mission, Johnson showed Sousa the film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which made him cry. Although he had a willingness to embrace the future, Sousa was gifted a typewriter from Johnson, which he used to write letters, including one to Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz. While on their journey in space, Sousa continued to refer to them as the "Astro Ambassadors".
Sousa with Daisy Johnson in deep space
One year after the team's last mission together, Johnson attended a virtual reunion with them, and Sousa told her to tell the team that he said hello. As Johnson was in the simulation, Sousa read Cosmos by Carl Sagan to expand his understandings of space in a scientific sense. Once Johnson exited the simulation, Sousa, who was right next to her, asked if the team was good, which she said they were. Kora then called them to the cockpit, and the three of them looked at the nebula and were amazed by the view that was before them.[12]
Personality[]
- "Nothing seems to faze you."
"It all fazes me; just maybe not my face."
"Every time I ask you for help, you say yes. Even if I don't ask, you're waiting here to make sure I rest or whatever." - ―Daisy Johnson and Daniel Sousa[src]

Abilities[]
- Expert Tactician: As a higher-up in S.H.I.E.L.D. and the SSR, Sousa was very good at formulating plans. When capturing Phil Coulson, Sousa smartly did not trust him nor Daisy Johnson, although he finally gave in to Johnson's manipulations. When he figured out Hydra was infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D., Sousa set up a drop off to give a package to Howard Stark. Additionally, while stuck in a time loop, Sousa realized that Johnson would lose her memory of previous loops if she died, so he grabbed an extractor tool because he knew he would simply come back like normal. This proved the correct move as Sousa died and got reset, allowing Johnson to keep her memories. While coming in contact with Chronicoms, Sousa suggested making bombs out of them.
- "For a guy who was ripped from his own timeline, who ended up on a spaceship full of robots, you're not doing half bad."
- ―Alphonso Mackenzie to Daniel Sousa[src]
- Expert Martial Artist: Having worked with the SSR and S.H.I.E.L.D., Sousa was an efficient fighter, even without the use of his leg. When he got a prosthetic one, his skills only grew.
- Expert Marksman: According to his records, Sousa's firearms ability is listed as "qualified expert." Hence, he can use revolvers, pistols, shotguns, and launchers with ease. He used one at the Lighthouse and although he did not his John Garrett as the latter teleported away before Sousa could shoot, his shots would've hit Garret straight in the forehead.
- "I think S.H.I.E.L.D. has been infiltrated. By Hydra."
- ―Daniel Sousa[src]
- Master Investigator: Daniel Sousa is an excellent detective. Sousa's expert investigative skills allowed him to not only realize that S.H.I.E.L.D. had been infiltrated by sleeper agents, but also that the infiltrators were members of Hydra. This caused an attempted assassination.
Equipment[]
Weapons[]

- "I got your back. I'm guessing you don't really carry a piece."
- ―Daniel Sousa to Daisy Johnson[src]
- Smith & Wesson M&P: was given one of these handguns and he carried it as his sidearm after joining the time-traveling S.H.I.E.L.D. team. He used it to stand guard while Daisy Johnson hacked into the Lighthouse, though they were both nevertheless kidnapped by Nathaniel Malick. Sousa continued carrying the handgun, and shot at John Garrett upon Jemma Simmons' request as he was kidnapping her, though Garrett was able to teleport away. Sousa then dual-wielded two of these guns when they infiltrated the hijacked Zephyr One in order to rescue Simmons, only to find it empty.
- Colt Official Police: Sousa carried this revolver as his sidearm during his tenure as security chief at Area 51. Sousa used his weapon to threaten Phil Coulson when he found him seemingly attacking Niles Lindmore, unaware that it was actually a Chronicom. He then holstered the revolver to hit Lindmore with his walking cane and stop him from strangling Coulson, but as the cane had no effect, he tried to take the revolver again, only to be disarmed by Lindmore.
- Chronicom Rifle: To be added
Other Equipment[]
- Prosthetic Leg: During his travels on Zephyr One, Jemma Simmons constructed a prosthetic leg for Sousa. The prosthetic allowed Sousa to walk freely, without the need of a crutch.
Vehicles[]
- Quinjet: Daniel Sousa was a passenger on a Quinjet several times, but never flew one. When first coming aboard on Zephyr One, Sousa entered a Quinjet to get there and was amazed by its the aeronautics technology. He also rode on a Quinjet, alongside Daisy Johnson and Alphonso Mackenzie, to fly to space in an attempt to reach the Zephyr in 1983.
- Zephyr One: Daniel Sousa came aboard on Zephyr One for the first time in 1955, after being rescued from the train to Los Angeles by S.H.I.E.L.D. He continued using it alongside the team for mobility purposes.

- Harley-Davidson: Having become concerned about whether or not S.H.I.E.L.D. were deceiving him about Hydra and Wilfred Malick while he was onboard Zephyr One, Sousa decided to travel to the Hotel Roosevelt himself, by stealing a motorcycle and riding away before S.H.I.E.L.D. were aware that he had escaped.
- Zephyr Three: Now in the prime timeline, Sousa, Johnson and Kora were on a sanctioned mission in space, traveling on a different model of the Zephyr, the Zephyr Three.
Facilities[]
- "Oh, you work at the old SSR office."
"I'm in charge of it." - ―Jemma Simmons and Daniel Sousa[src]
- Auerbach Theatrical Agency: Sousa was the chief of the Auerbach Theatrical Agency while working to take down the Council of Nine, later becoming in charge of it when it became a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility.
- Area 51: Area 51 is a highly classified United States Air Force facility in Nevada, which was also one of the earliest S.H.I.E.L.D. bases. Daniel Sousa was called there to retrieve a device from Dr. Niles Lindmore and supervise Project Helius in 1955 and ended up encountering a future incarnation of S.H.I.E.L.D.
- The Krazy Kanoe: In 1973, Daniel Sousa had gone with S.H.I.E.L.D. to a bar called the Krazy Kanoe looking for Enoch, but he was not there. The team finds out that Wilfred Malick and Nathaniel Malick were both alive, skipping their original dates of death and they also learn that Project Insight had been accelerated and was due to be launched in 1976.
- Lighthouse: S.H.I.E.L.D. used the Lighthouse as a base of operations in 1982 and the main team arrived there in 1983, after escaping a time storm.

Behind the Scenes[]
- Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. co-creator Jed Whedon revealed in an interview with The A.V. Club that there were talks to have Daniel Sousa time travel to the Battle of New York and go undercover as Officer Saunders, the character played by Enver Gjokaj in The Avengers, during the seventh season, but the idea was dropped due to conflicts with the established timeline.[13]
