Biography[]
Hero Day[]
- "Today's the day!"
"What's today?"
"Hero Day!" - ―DJ, Bus Driver, and DJ's Class[src]
DJ grew up in the Washington, D.C. area and was a fan of Sam Wilson, admiring his consistent willingness to help other people. Although most mornings he was hesitant to wake up, on the day of Hero Day, he was excited to see Wilson give a speech and present Solar-Battery Drones to help bring electricity to the disenfranchised. He excitedly shouted that it was the day, getting shushed by his brother. DJ's mother reminded him to brush his teeth, and Bast looked at him quesitoningly as he brushed his teeth. DJ boarded the school bus and excited shouted that it was the day, leading the entire bus to express their excitement for Hero Day.
DJ's school took them to the Captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution, where Wilson was presenting. DJ shouted to Captain America as he began presenting the solar-battery drones. DJ shushed everyone around him while Wilson spoke, reminding the children into the audience that anyone could be a hero by doing the right thing.[1]
Theft of the Solar-Battery Drones[]
- "Captain America!"
- ―DJ to Sam Wilson[src]
Suddenly, smoke emerged onstage and a group of soldiers appeared, stealing the Solar-Battery Drones and escaping into the Smithsonian Institution. DJ cowered from a tree as the explosion had knocked it over, but Wilson pushed it out of the way before it could hurt everyone. DJ cheered for Wilson as he flew after the soldiers, but DJ noticed that Wilson had left his shield behind. He tried to find someone to take the shield to Wilson, but his teacher and the bus driver were pre-occupied. He asked a stranger, but he was preoccupied with his underwear being on fire. DJ determined that he would have to return the shield itself. He picked up, struggling to lift its weight, and went into the museum.
Inside, he saw Wilson tying up a soldier and demanding to know who they worked for. There was another explosion and DJ tried to reach Wilson. DJ watched Wilson create a bridge so that tourists could cross a gap in the floor, but DJ noticed one tourist who was distracted filming the incident on his phone and did not notice the hole or the bridge. DJ pushed the shield under the man's feet, allowing him to use the shield to absent-mindedly walk across. DJ picked the shield back up and caught up with Wilson demanding to know the name of the soldiers' leader. The solder simply shouted about a group named SERPENT and ran away. DJ watched Wilson save a woman from a fallen display, and the woman called out for her dog. DJ saw the dog on top of a nearby Bucky Barnes display as smoke filled the room. The dog sneezed and fell off, so DJ got inside the shield and slid across the floor on it, catching the dog, which he nicknamed Barky Barnes as the dog crawled into his hood.
DJ followed Wilson to the stairs, seeing Wilson climb onto the roof. DJ hid as the soldiers appeared to have Wilson trapped and decided he needed to help in that moment. He shouted to Wilson and rolled the shield across the roof. Wilson took it and used it to defeat the soldiers.[1]
Learning about Heroism[]
Once the soldiers were apprehended, Sam Wilson approached DJ and demanded to know what he was thinking, but DJ was too excited about getting a lecture from Captain America to answer. Wilson asked DJ his name, and DJ explained that he thought Wilson would need his shield in order to be a hero. Wilson empathized with DJ's desire to help, but told DJ that looking like a hero did not make someone a hero. DJ asked if someone who is small can be a hero, so Wilson gestured toward the people he saved inside the Smithsonian Institution and told Wilson that DJ was the one who saved them. Wilson explained that people would get the Solar-Battery Drones thanks to DJ, saying that a hero looked like him. Wilson patted DJ's shoulder and asked where he got his hoodie. DJ said that he made it, so Wilson asked DJ to make him a hoodie, claiming his uniform got itchy.[1]
Personality[]
DJ is a person who values kindness and idolizes Sam Wilson for the latter's consistent demonstration of being willing to help others. His idolization of Wilson led him to shush people around him when Wilson was talking and to be willing to run into a dangerous situation to help Wilson. He put such kindness into practice by saving multiple people, and even a dog, Barky Barnes, instead of going directly to his hero. DJ initially lacked confidence, asking others to bring Wilson's lost shield to him and hiding from SERPENT. However, Wilson helped DJ to realize that he was a hero himself due to his heroic actions in the Smithsonian Institution.

He used the shield to save a man who was about to step into a gap in the floor and to slide across the floor of the museum in order to catch Barky Barnes. He returned the shield to Captain America so that the latter could use it to defeat the SERPENT soldiers.
