"I don't eat meat."
"Why not?"
"It disagrees with me."
"How about cyanide? Does that give you the rumbly tummy, too?"
Arnim Zola and Chester Phillips[src]

A Cyanide Pill, also known as a suicide pill, is a little capsule containing a poisonous substance designed to be ingested deliberately to quickly end one's own life.

World War II

"Every HYDRA agent that we've tried to take alive has crunched a little pill before we can stop him."
Chester Phillips[src]

Heinz Kruger dying by the use of the Cyanide Pill

During World War II, cyanide pills were common between spies. As such, after killing Abraham Erskine, HYDRA agent Heinz Kruger tried to flee using the Fieser Dorsch. Steve Rogers pursued him and successfully avoided Kruger's escape, but before he could be questioned, Kruger swallowed a cyanide pill concealed inside a fake tooth, dying shortly after menacing Rogers about being the first of many HYDRA operatives.

Chester Phillips noted in his interrogation of Arnim Zola that Zola was the only HYDRA agent that the Strategic Scientific Reserve captured alive because he didn't take a cyanide pill.[1]

Breath Mints

"Cyanide. You get a painless death, and nobody gets the satisfaction of watching you hang."
Roger Dooley to Ernst Mueller[src]

When Roger Dooley, Chief of a New York City branch of the Strategic Scientific Reserve, visited the Nazi war criminal Colonel Ernst Mueller at the Nuremberg Prison, he offered Mueller a Cyanide Pill to avoid a hanging in exchange for information about the Battle of Finow. However, the pill was actually a breath mint, and Mueller was hanged.[2]

Capture of Richard Lumley

"Cyanide? What did you think we were gonna do to you?"
Phil Coulson[src]

S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents Phil Coulson and Melinda May were trying to capture former agent Richard Lumley in Mexico, and interrogate him about his partner Agent Linda Avery. Lumley tried to consume one of these pills concealed in his watch before he was captured, fearing Coulson and May wanted to torture him, as he was shown to be very relieved when they identified themselves as agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.[3]

A Loyal Man

Bobbi Morse tries to save Sunil Bakshi after he tries to kill himself

"Cyanide! We checked him!"
"Capsule embedded in his cheekbone!"
Lance Hunter and Bobbi Morse[src]

When S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Bobbi Morse attempted to interrogate HYDRA operative Sunil Bakshi about his superior officer, Daniel Whitehall, Bakshi, demonstrating his loyalty to HYDRA, attempted to commit suicide with a cyanide pill embedded in his cheekbone. However, S.H.I.E.L.D. was able to stop his suicide attempt.[4]

Destruction of HYDRA

General Fischer of the United States Air Force and a secret HYDRA agent was arrested by Glenn Talbot during the Destruction of HYDRA. Preferring to die than being arrested, Fischer took a cyanide pill, so Talbot's men escorted him out of his office to seek medical attention.[5]
