Cull Obsidian was a member of the Black Order. Alongside the rest of the Order, he was hired by the Collector as security for his vast collection. Black Dwarf found himself facing off against Thanos, though he was killed by Nebula using the stolen Embers of Genesis.
Cull Obsidian and the rest of the Black Order were hired by the Collector, who seized an opening in the power vacuum when Thanos changed his ways. Under Tivan, Cull Obsidian and the others were given security duty, protecting the museum and the many items within it, Tivan's vast collection.[2]
In 2008, Cull Obsidian was on guard duty alongside his brother Corvus Glaive, when the pair were alerted to a disturbance. Upon investigating, they found the Ravagers and realized it was a diversion. Later, as the team attempted to make their escape, having stolen the Embers of Genesis, Black Dwarf gave chase alongside Proxima Midnight.
The pair came to face Thanos, Dwarf marching towards the Titan as he dispatched the numerous Sakaarans. Cull Obsidian swung with heavy blows, Thanos catching his chain hammer with a smile and pushing back against it, landing punches on Cull Obsidian. However, the Titan was thrown off by Midnight, allowing both Cull Obsidian and her to viciously beat Thanos. Cull Obsidian then slammed Thanos to the ground, and began smashing the chain hammer repeatedly against him. He stopped as Proxima stepped over, ready to execute the Titan, but both were suddenly stopped in their tracks by the arrival of Nebula, who took down Proxima.
Cull Obsidian's final moments
Cull Obsidian lunged forwards, grabbing Nebula by the throat, roaring as he prepared to crush her. Before he could, however, Nebula opened the canister containing the stolen Embers of Genesis, and allowed a couple of its spores to fly free, right into Cull Obsidian's open mouth. Dropping Nebula and coughing, Cull Obsidian had little time to realize what had just happened before the spores activated, blowing Cull Obsidian apart as plants burst out, growing at a rapid pace and transforming all of Knowhere into a massive botanic garden.[2]
Cull Obsidian's likeness is based off of Terry Notary.
In the closed captions for What If... T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?, the character was originally referred to as Black Dwarf, his original name from the comics, as opposed to Cull Obsidian, the rename his main universe counterpart was given. However, by 2025, Disney+ had edited the error, with the closed captions now referring to him as Cull Obsidian. Additionally, the audio description for the episode also changed to call him Cull Obsidian.
