The Crown of Black Fire[1] was the headpiece of the Fire Demon Surtur. When merged with the Eternal Flame, it was capable of resurrecting Surtur and greatly increasing his power.
History[]
Ragnarök[]
Escape from Muspelheim[]

Surtur is killed
Two years after the Battle of Sokovia, Thor had been unsuccessfully searching for the Infinity Stones, and was now imprisoned by the Fire Demon Surtur. Surtur boasted that Asgard would soon be destroyed in the prophesied Ragnarök, once Surtur would unite his crown with the Eternal Flame that could burn beneath the city. Thor killed Surtur and claimed his crown, believing he had prevented Ragnarök. Upon his return to Asgard, Thor had the crown sequestered in Odin's Vault to keep Surtur from being resurrected.[2]
Destruction of Asgard[]

Surtur being reborn within the Eternal Flame
Some time later when Thor came to reclaim Asgard from the clutches of Hela, he found it too difficult a task to defeat her alone. With the surviving population of Asgardians disembarking from Asgard on the Statesman, Thor made the decision to actualize Ragnarök and use Surtur's power to defeat and kill Hela. Knowing the Asgardian people were out of harm's way, he ordered Loki to place Surtur's crown in the Eternal Flame, thereby resurrecting him. Surtur subsequently grew to a gigantic size with his crown, destroyed Asgard, and died in the resulting explosion, destroying his crown in the process.[2]
Alternate Universe Versions[]
Thor's Party[]

- "I've got a crown too, and we both like fire, right? Come on. Let's see you turn up the heat on this thing."
- ―Surtur to the Statue of Liberty[src]
In an alternate universe, Surtur, wearing his crown, came to Earth and flirted with the Statue of Liberty, only to accidentally break the torch arm and run off. Later, Surtur returned and fixed the Statue, using his powers to re-attach the torch arm.[3]
Capabilities[]
- "When my crown is reunited with the Eternal Flame, I shall be restored to my full might."
- ―Surtur to Thor[src]
The Crown of Black Fire was the source of its wearer's power. It possessed an immense of durability, since it remained intact upon facing the full might of Mjølnir that merely killed Surtur. Upon being placed on the Eternal Flame, the crown resurrected and restored Surtur to his full strength, allowing the Fire Demon to instigate Ragnarök and destroy all of Asgard.
