Stephen Strange's Car Crash[]
Christine Palmer lies dead in the aftermath of the car crash
- "Oh, no. No, no, no, no. Christine. Come on! Christine!"
- ―Stephen Strange to Christine Palmer[src]
Preparing to take her to a dinner event he was speaking at, Stephen Strange picked up Christine Palmer outside of her apartment complex. While driving on narrow mountainside road, Strange attempted to drive around a truck before almost being struck by an oncoming car. Strange was able narrowly avoid the car before a separate car crashed into the rear of Strange's car. This collision caused Strange to lose control of the car, leading to tumble down the nearby cliff until it was stopped by a metal gate. While Strange survived the crash, Palmer did not.[2]
Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts[]
Stephen Strange trains as Kamar-Taj
In grief over Christine Palmer's death, Stephen Strange sought out Kamar-Taj and began training with the Masters of the Mystic Arts. Months into his training, Strange would discover the Eye of Agamotto. He would practice it's time warping abilities on apple before being scolded by the Ancient One and Wong for using it.
Doctor Strange comes to bargain
During a conflict involving the Masters of the Mystic Arts, the Ancient One became gravely injured. She soon died in Metro-General Hospital with Strange by her side. With the Ancient One now dead, Strange led the Masters in her stead. The conflict involving them ultimately culminated in a confrontation between Strange and Dormammu.[2]
Resurrection of Christine Palmer[]
Rescue of Christine Palmer[]
Doctor Strange goes back in time
- "Why does this keep happening? Aren't we allowed to be happy?"
- ―Stephen Strange to Christine Palmer[src]
Roughly one year following his defeat of Dormammu, Doctor Strange used the Eye of Agamotto to travel back in time to the day that Christine Palmer died, hoping to prevent her death. Learning from his past mistake, Strange decides to not go around the truck in front of him. Despite his attempts to keep Palmer alive, another car rear ended his, causing the car crash to happen all the same.
One of Christine Palmer's many deaths
Wanting to never lose Palmer again, Strange locked himself in a time loop until he could prevent her death. Despite all of his attempts, Strange could never prevent Palmer's death. Following yet another failed attempt, Strange crawled out of his crashed car, yelling out in anger over his inability to save Palmer. Strange was then be greeted by the Ancient One, who traveled via a portal to speak with him.
The Ancient One splits Doctor Strange
The Ancient One informs Strange that Palmer's death cannot be reversed as it is an Absolute Point. Despite the Ancient One warning Strange that reversing Palmer's death would lead to the destruction of their universe, Strange remained headstrong in his mission, insisting that he only needed more power. Wanting to gain knowledge that had been lost to time, Strange used the Eye of Agamotto to travel back in time and visit the Lost Library of Cagliostro. While he was doing this, the Ancient One used Magic from the Dark Dimension to create another version of Strange that decided to not travel back in time to rescue Palmer. Both Stranges co-existed in this universe without the others knowledge for the time being.[2]
Attack on the Mystic Beings[]
Doctor Strange searches for a book on time manipulation
- "'The power required to break an Absolute Point in time is immense, and nigh impossible to obtain.' Yeah, no doy. Aha! 'Gain the power from the absorption of other beings.'"
- ―Doctor Strange[src]
Arriving in the distant past, Doctor Strange found himself outside of the Lost Library of Cagliostro where he met O'Bengh, the librarian for the books of Cagliostro. Upon arriving inside of the library, Strange read a book that informed him that he could acquire the power needed to break an absolute point by absorbing other beings. Strange began his quest for power by summoning a giant tentacle monster and asking the creature if he could take some of its power. This did not end well for Strange, with him being picked up and thrown by the monster.
Doctor Strange summons a mystical being
As O'Bengh nurses Strange back to health, he tells Strange that mystic beings do not bargain and warns Strange against his continued quest for more power. Strange doesn't heed his warning how however, instead choosing to gain more power by absorbing magical entities. As the centuries ticked on, Strange grew more and more powerful while using the Eye of Agamotto to remain unaged. O'Bengh, on the other hand, choose to live out his life, rejecting Strange's offer to extend his life. On his deathbed, O'Bengh informs Strange of his other self's existence.[2]
Duel at the End of the Universe[]
Doctor Strange speaks with the Ancient One
- "Our time is running out. I fear the only sorcerer strong enough to stop Doctor Strange is you. Doctor Strange."
- ―Ancient One to Doctor Strange[src]
Back in 2018, Doctor Strange chooses not to use the Eye of Agamotto to revive Christine Palmer. The next day, he walks outside of the New York Sanctum to see his universe disintegrating around him. Strange is informed by an apparition of the Ancient One that she split him in two, and that his other self is causing this universe to collapse. She then tasks Strange with defeating Strange Supreme before it's too late.
Strange Supreme summons his alternate self
Strange returns to the inside of the New York Sanctum where he informs Wong of what the Ancient One told him. Preparing for the fight of his life, Strange has Wong apply him with the Guardian Vishanti before Strange is sucked through a portal into the past. There he comes face to face with Strange Supreme, who take Strange to the site of their fateful car crash.
Doctor Strange becomes whole again
Strange Supreme attempts to convince Strange to merge with him so that he can regain his full power. But Strange refuses, telling his alternate self that they cannot bring Christine Palmer back without destroying their universe. Strange Supreme refuses to give up on reviving Palmer, causing the two Stranges to duke it out. While Strange fought back against his doppelgänger with all his might, Strange Supreme was too strong for him to overcome. Upon destroying the Guardian Vishanti spell placed on Strange, Strange Supreme was able to merge with his duplicate and become whole yet again.[2]
Death and Rebirth of the Universe[]
This universe collapses around Doctor Strange
When Doctor Strange successfully reversed an Absolute Point to save Christine Palmer this universe began to collapse. As Strange attempted to stop is destruction with Magic, he begged Watcher to save his world but the Watcher refused, telling Strange that he cannot interfere. While Strange couldn't prevent the destruction of this universe, he was able to put him and Palmer in protective bubble, allowing them to float in the nothingness that remained. With her universe destroyed, Palmer soon dissolved in Strange's arms leaving him alone in the void.[2]
Doctor Strange speaks with Watcher
When an Ultron from another universe threatened the entire Multiverse, The Watcher visited what remained of this universe and asked for Strange's help in defeating the multiversal threat.[3] Upon Ultron's defeat, Strange returned to this world. Strange still sat alone in void of this world, but he was now tasked with watching over Erik Killmonger and Arnim Zola who were trapped in a pocket dimension of Strange's own design.[1]
Captain Carter and Watcher visit the reborn universe
Refusing to give up on his mission to revive Palmer, Strange created the Forge in hopes of recreating this universe. Initially planning to use powerful beings from other universes to power the World Forge, Strange ultimately sacrificed himself to bring out the rebirth of this universe. While Strange was successful in his goal, he created a version of this universe where he was never born.[4] Instead, Strange's soul coursed through every atom of the new universe, continuing to help to shape the new reality that he had created.[5]
