- "The Church always tells us that our faith… Is our strength. That it alone will save us from the darkness. But sometimes life has a way of testing our faith through what we experience, what we feel. So if I am having doubts about what I have seen and felt, then, who am I to pass judgment on anyone else?"
- ―Gabriella Rosetti to Joshua Crow
Containment is the fourth episode of the first season of the television series Helstrom.
Synopsis[]
A demonic enemy brings together an unusual group. Daimon and Ana travel to San Francisco in search of Yen and an artifact that may help defeat the enemy. Ana tells Daimon about her extracurricular activities, and Gabriella’s faith is attacked.
Plot[]
Rosetti says a prayer at church while some organ music plays in the background. Eventually, she goes to that church's priest and confesses. Rosetti starts off by saying that it has been a month since her last confession. The priest tells her to go on, and she sighs heavily before continuing. While under the sacrament of confession in Roman Catholicism, Rosetti confesses that a couple of months ago, she was sent to Portland, Oregon from Rome with a mission. She is supposed to report to the archbishop at this church if she finds any disturbing and unnatural behavior from the likes of Daimon Helstrom and the rest of his family. However, Rosetti admits that it has now gotten complicated because she feels as thought she can not judge Daimon for his sins as she learns more about what is happening. At some point, the priest gets possessed and questions Rosetti about her sins. Particularly, if she has had any lustful thoughts. Rosetti admits she is not sure, but defends herself by saying that everyone has had those kind of thoughts before. The priest then asks her if she likes the way Daimon makes her feel between her legs. Rosetti realizes the priest has been possessed and tries to leave but finds herself trapped in the confessional booth. The possessed priest then tries to attack her after telling her that he can make her feel the way Daimon has made her feel too.
Earlier that day, Rosetti is doing some planting, while Daimon was out running and Ana Helstrom is crashing at Daimon's place as she listen to music and makes herself something to eat. Whereas Dr. Hastings for her part is struggling with opening her bottle of cancer medication, and Caretaker brings some donuts to the others. Rosetti arrives at Daimon's place and gets hit on by Ana but brushes it off. Daimon then announces to the people gathered in his home that their Dad is truly back but in a different form. Ana explains that it is sort of like he was reborn somehow. Caretaker then explains to the Helstrom siblings that they can not kill their Dad, but what they can do is find another Keeper demon to contain him once more. Daimon then asks where they can find another keeper, and Caretaker reveals that the Keeper's Skull Ana found in Colma, California is their best bet. Ana decides to go back to San Francisco to retrieve the skull, but her brother Daimon is right behind her to make the case as to why they all need to go with her. Unfortunately for Ana, Yen is not answering her calls. Begrudgingly, she hints at being worried for the others' safety after seeing firsthand how powerful their dad is twenty years later. Daimon admits to being afraid too and vows that if their dad comes back for Ana, he will be there for her.
Back inside, Rosetti argues with Caretaker telling the older man that it is impossible for people to just come back from the dead. This amuses Caretaker, who points out the irony in her statement, all while believing that Jesus came back from the dead. Nevertheless, Rosetti argues that one cannot simply contain someone's soul because it is immoral. Caretaker rebuffs that by saying that Ana and Daimon's father is not like the other demons, who hop from person to person. He calls him a monster, and his soul, if he ever had one to begin with, is dead. Thus, the only thing left is pure evil. Rosetti then asks Caretaker that if what he is saying is indeed true, then what does that say about his children.
Back in the present, Rosetti is saved by Caretaker from the demon that was attacking her. When she asks him if Caretaker followed her to the church, all he tells her is that he always does his homework when it comes to people he is in business with.
Now in San Francisco once more, the Helstrom siblings find that Yen is not around and the alarm is not even set. Down in the room of artifacts, there is a lot blood and a very dead brother of Tate but no skull and no Yen can be found.
Elsewhere, Yen goes up to a chained up door that is under a park and gets inside.
Meanwhile, Caretaker explains to Rosetti that he did not exorcise the possessed priest. Instead, he used a Keeper Talisman. According to Caretaker, keeper demons are a rare breed since they rebelled against their own.
Ana can not believe that Yen attacked the man and walked off with the skull. Daimon wants to call the police, but Ana reminds him that there are bigger concerns right now. He can either help to clean up the body or leave. Dr. Hastings checks on Victoria Helstrom who seems to be deteriorating physically. Apparently her vitamin D levels are lower than they have ever been. She then makes plans to take Victoria outside to see if that will help her.
At the Blood Hotel, there are people who are possessed hooked up to medical machines. The Blood run the hotel and Caretaker explains that they are a group of people who fight and keep track of the people who have been possessed. They put the possessed in medically induced comas so the people do not suffer. Unfortunately there is no reprieve as they stay like that forever. Ana uses her abilities to take the dead body and crush it to a compactable shape. She's uninterested in talking about what she experienced with their Dad.
Back in Portland, Oregon, Mother enjoys the sun as she reminisces about her past with her children, who she adored but she does not want to think about who took them. Dr. Hastings asks who Mother is. Her response is that she is Kthara, a woman betrayed by those she loved.
In San Francisco, Ana and Daimon get a visit from an officer who happens to be Yen's boyfriend. Officer Jackson thinks that Daimon could be the reason for Yen's late nights. Daimon tells the officer that Yen is not his type.
Yen as it turns out is underground with some spiders. He is unimpressed by the spot but takes out the skull nevertheless. Meanwhile, Officer Jackson lets Ana have it, and tells her that he is not happy with the way that she treats Yen. Trying to get him out as fast as possible, Ana apologizes and informs Jackson that she sent Yen out on an appraisal of some Mongolian coins overseas. Jackson takes the explanation but informs her that he can not take the bull anymore. Daimon questions Ana on the type of business that she and Yen run, stating he knows it is not about the rare artifacts. Ana does not say anything at first but then reveals that Yen helps her kill people.
Rosetti makes a case for all the people's lives, stating that Daimon can exorcise them but Caretaker disagrees with that naive notion. When Daimon saves a possessed person, that thing inside them, is set free. It goes back to where it came from, it connects with its friends, it plots, it gets stronger, and eventually it comes back to kill. Rosetti nevertheless voices that putting people in comas is not the answer either. That all the Blood organization is doing is treating symptoms, not fighting the disease. Caretaker for his part tells Rosetti that what Daimon is doing is no cure either.
Ana's then explains to her brother that she kills people who do wrong. Daimon can not believe that she could do something like that to people, even if she thinks they deserve it. Ana then realizes that Daimon thinks that she is just like their father.
Elsewhere, Yen is now ingesting spiders as he pierces the skull's teeth into his skin. He then snaps out of it and tells the keeper demon that it is not okay to make him eat dead spiders.
Back at the Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health, Mother is refusing to go back into her room, stating there is something different in it. Dr. Hastings tries to bargain and finds out that Mother has given her cancer. She will take the cancer away if they take out whatever is in her room.
Ana is by her little box, when Daimon checks on her. The trinkets in the box give her pain that she uses to stop people who cause that kind of pain. The box was a gift from their mom, to keep jewelry in, but Ana used them to store the presents that Dad brought home, thinking that he was showing her love. Their mom hated the box but never threw it away. Daimon wonders if Ana ever thought about returning the items to the victims’ families. Ana confesses that she never wanted them to know that these people were killed by a serial killer. In addition, she tells Daimon that her plan is to bury the box with Dad.
Just as Rosetti is checking on the priest who attacked her, he awakens and tries to get out, begging for her to help him. But before she can do anything, Caretaker pulls her out. She wants Caretaker to stop what is going on but he tells her that this goes back seven generations. She is upset to find out that Dr. Hastings knows about this facility.
In San Francisco, Daimon uses his powers to burn the body that is in a box without burning the box alone. This action surprises Ana, who ends up running to her brother's side to check up on him.
Later, Dr. Hastings gets questioned by Rosetti on what and who the Blood are. She is further distraught when she realizes that the Vatican also knows about the Blood and their inhumane methods of dealing with possessed people. Dr. Hastings tries to comfort Rosetti, by reminding her that at the end of the day, while they may have different methodologies, they all have a common enemy.
Ana is back to being cold and distant with Daimon once they come back to Portland. He wants them to work together but Ana says she is fine and goes back to her hotel. Daimon finds that Magoth is possessing the college student who is in his house enjoying some of the leftover donuts. Magoth says he comes in peace to make a deal with Daimon. He wants Ana in exchange for liberating Victoria from the demon inside her. Daimon does not take the offer. Which leads to things to start flying around his house upon his refusal. Luckily for him, Ana arrives just in time. The two siblings work together to exorcise Magoth again. Ana is further surprised to see what Daimon does with demonic powers.
Yen and the skull, it seems, are right under Mother's room, which is what is torturing her as she screams in agony upstairs and writhes in pain.
