Plot[]
Many years ago, Tyrone Johnson and Billy Johnson are running from NOPD James Connors. Meanwhile, Nathan Bowen is driving with his young daughter Tandy Bowen. He gets a call from Ivan Hess asking about the Roxxon Gulf Platform. Suddenly, the Platform explodes causing Nathan to veer off the road into the water, killing him. The explosion triggers an accidental shot from Connors that kills Billy, Tyrone flies backwards into the water as well. The explosion sets off Lightforce and Darkforce energy that are put in contact with Tandy and Tyrone. The next day, Tandy wakes up on the beach with an unconscious Tyrone next to her. She takes his hoodie and leaves before he wakes up.
In the present, Johnson, now a star basketball player at his high school, assaults an opposing player out of frustration. Bowen and her boyfriend, Liam Walsh, go around and rob many rich people through manipulation. She now lives at St. Theresa's Church by herself. She has a mother still, but after her father's death, her mother has been very drunk and less caring of Bowen. Johnson is invited to a party by Evita Fusilier, Bowen is also invited, but takes it as an opportunity to rob people. She steals Johnson's wallet, when he chases her, he grabs her which cause them both to emit Lightforce and Darkforce. Bowen recognizes him as the boy from the beach and runs away. Bowen returns home to her mother and touches her, she then sees a vision of her mother's hopes. Concurrently, Johnson returns to his home to sleep and wakes up on his roof. Although confused, Bowen still goes to rob a man named Rick Cotton. Cotton instead catches Bowen and tries to rape her, Bowen accidentally lets out Lightforce which forges itself into a Dagger. She then stabs Cotton with it until he runs away. Her actions cause Officer Brigid O'Reilly to tail her.
Bowen and Walsh steal money when they crash a wedding. Although, O'Reilly gets closer to finding them. Soon, O'Reilly finds and arrests Walsh, Bowen decides to drive out of the city. Meanwhile, Johnson finds Connors, wanting to kill him out of revenge for his brother. He goes to shoot Connors, but teleports as he presses the trigger. He arrives in front of Bowen's car and shoots her car on accident. This causes Bowen to crash. Bowen then recognizes him and runs away. She then tries to take the bus out of the city, but has a vision of a younger Johnson with his brother. Billy doesn't go with his friends the night of the explosion, which would've avoided his death. She then gets a vision of Johnson from hours ago, where he had a gun up to Connors. If he shot Connors, then he would be chased forever, but if she helps him find hope, then they could use it to lock him up instead.
Johnson meets with Fusilier, who directs him to her aunt, Chantelle Fusilier. Chantelle has Johnson do a cleansing bath where he has a vision of Nathan Bowen in a Roxxon Corporation meeting, getting tortured. A young Tandy runs away instead of helping. He walks over to a piece of stained glass and touches it. Meanwhile, real Bowen is on the other side and also touches it. They both regain consciousness. Bowen then calls O'Reilly, who after talking with Cotton, believes Bowen was a victim of rape instead of assaulting Cotton. Johnson meets with Evita Fusilier, and they share a kiss. Johnson then sees St. Teresa's Church and recognizes it as the one from the dream, he goes inside and sees Bowen where they talk about their newfound powers. Later, Johnson's father, Otis, gives Johnson Billy's cloak. Melissa's boyfriend, Greg Pressfield, gets murdered by a Roxxon hit man as Bowen watches from a far.
Johnson and Bowen reconvene and talk about their survivors guilt. Bowen says that sometimes she wishes that she was the one to die. Johnson disagrees strongly which causes an argument that ends when Johnson tells her to just do it then. Bowen listens and walks down to the dock where she attempts to drown herself. However, her lightforce gives her hope and she has enough to break free from the rope holding her under water. She then decides to investigate on both the murder of Pressfield and also the explosion on the gulf platform.
Johnson prepares for his basketball game when he is suddenly teleported to a warehouse where he sees an old friend of his brother's, Duane Porter, he then somehow teleports back. Meanwhile, Bowen goes to a Roxxon gala to get information. She sees the hopes of many employees which all share the same thing, the humiliation of a man. During the game, Johnson loses control of his powers while Bowen gets more skilled. This causes the basketball to teleport to Bowen. Suddenly, Johnson then teleports to Bowen. Johnson blames her, but she explains that he is losing control when he is in danger. She proves it by pushing him off the balcony. He then teleports back to the game. Bowen finds the man in the employees' hopes, Peter Scarborough. She reads his hopes and sees him with money collected from the victims of the explosion. Among these victims is Ivan Hess. Bowen then decides to befriend Hess' daughter, Mina Hess. Later, Johnson teleports to Duane Porter again and sees him talking to Connors.
Bowen befriends Mina Hess, who is a scientist at Roxxon. She finds her father, who is in a comatose state from the explosion and is at the hospital. She tries to see his hopes, but is unable to access them as they are locked by a Darkforce gate. Meanwhile, Connors finds out that O'Reilly is on to him and orders Porter to shoot her. When she arrives, she sees the gun and kills Porter before he can do the same. Johnson teleports to Bowen before Connors catches him. Chantelle tells Fusilier about all the New Orleans has been on the bring of destruction and every time, it is saved by a group with the title, Divine Pairing. However, one of them always dies.
Bowen and Johnson decide to work together and go to see Ivan. When accessing their mind, Johnson's darkforce unlocks the gate and they are put inside a never ending memory of Ivan's last moment's before the explosion. They find that smoke was released, turning the victims into enraged creatures called Terrors. Every time the platform explodes, the memory resets. Bowen finds a phone ringing and realizes it is her father, she stays and talks to him refusing to leave. Johnson comes back for her and finds that she has become very skilled, but still doesn't want to leave the phone. With help from Johnson she realizes it isn't actually her father, but what Ivan envisioned her father as. They work together to stop the explosion which in turn, wakes Ivan from his comatose state.
Bowen goes to Scarborough and puts a lightforce dagger to his neck, threatening him. He denies any involvement in the explosion and then offers Bowen money if she doesn't go to the press. She angrily leaves. Johnson enlists the help of O'Reilly and her boyfriend, Kenneth Fuchs to scare Connors into telling the truth. They lure Connors to the dock where he killed Billy and they make him believe Johnson was Billy's ghost. This scares a confession out of him, which they record. Later, O'Reilly goes to celebrate with Fuchs, but finds him inside a refrigerator, killed by Connors. Meanwhile, Melissa, Bowen, and Johnson commemorate the anniversary since Nathan's death. They join hands which causes them to see Melissa's memories. They find a memory of Nathan abusing Melissa. With this, Bowen decides to stop her quest and take the money from Scarborough.
With the discovery, Bowen goes back to her previous life of crime, this time using her powers to manipulate her victims. Once she gets enough money, she bails Walsh out of jail. However, she begins to steal his hopes for her own power. Tyrone senses this and stops her. Bowen later goes out, when she comes back she finds that Walsh had left after stealing her money. She goes to her mother, but finds she has been kidnapped by Scarborough's hit man. O'Reilly tries to get drunk, but hears of Connors release. She finds out that Connors pinned everything on Johnson. Connors then arrives and punches her repeatedly before leaving. Later, Mina investigates a Roxxon pipe that is heating up quickly. Suddenly, it explodes, turning her colleagues into Terrors.
Bowen attacks the hit man with her dagger and frees Melissa. She is then met by Mina, who tells her that there are nine valves throughout the city, and if they all explode then everyone could be turned into Terrors. Bowen concludes that they need to shut it down manually. They go to see Scarborough, where he gives them the location of the main server. Bowen then outs him into a coma using her dagger. Later, Mina is infected by the Terrors and attacks Bowen. Johnson, who had been running from the NOPD along with O'Reilly, accidentally teleports to Bowen and saves her from Mina. They encounter Connors, who tries to kill them. Connors shoots O'Reilly, who falls into the water below. Johnson then uses the darkforce to absorb Connors. After, they make it to the servers, but the manual override doesn't work. They then decide to use the combined energy of the lightforce and darkforce to stop the explosion. The Terrors then go away and Bowen moves back in with her mother, who had decided to go to rehab. Johnson, who is still on the run, is forced to stay at Bowen's old church. O'Reilly crawls her way out of the water.
