"Welcome to the Citadel at the End of Time."
Miss Minutes to Loki and Sylvie Laufeydottir[src]

The Citadel at the End of Time is the former residence of He Who Remains, who watched over the Sacred Timeline at the end of time. Following his death, it became the residence of Loki, after weaving the branches of the growing Multiverse.

"We found him beyond the storm. A Citadel at the End of Time."
Loki to Mobius M. Mobius[src]

Following the Multiversal War, He Who Remains found an asteroid in the end of the time and built his residence on it,[1] which was named as "Citadel at the End of Time". Later, He Who Remains would meet with Ravonna Renslayer to thank her for helping him win the War, hoping she could lead the Time Variance Authority with him. However, he would later erase her memories with the aid of Miss Minutes.[2]

Loki with Sylvie

Millennia later,[3] Loki and Sylvie were transported to the Void, where they discovered that Alioth guarded the access to the ruler of the "Sacred Timeline". After battling and enchanting Alioth to pass through him, Loki and Sylvie reached the Citadel.[4] Upon arriving at the entrance to the Citadel, the doors opened and they were let inside. They were then greeted by Miss Minutes, who told them of a deal that He Who Remains could give them and that each could have what they really wanted. Dismissing this as fictional, Loki and Sylvie walked further into the Citadel and found themselves face to face with He Who Remains.

He Who Remains invited them to his office, where they sat down, and listened as he told them about his other Variants, the Multiversal War, using Alioth, and creating the Time Variance Authority. After this, he told them they had two options, one to kill him and set off the next Multiversal War or take over the TVA. Choosing the first option, Sylvie pushed Loki through a Timedoor to the TVA, and killed He Who Remains, setting off the Multiverse's expansion and destruction. However, Sylvie left the Citadel and returned back to the branching Multiverse.[5][6]

Following He Who Remains' death some time later, the Citadel would slowly collapse in itself as the Multiverse would continue to break outside. After being confronted by Sylvie in a branching timeline, Ravonna Renslayer would be pushed through a Timedoor into the Citadel. Discovering the decaying corpse of He Who Remains, Renslayer and Miss Minutes regrouped after failing to recover a variant of He Who Remains to help them repair the Temporal Loom and retake the TVA.[7] Miss Minutes then revealed an old recording that showed Renslayer's past life as the general of He Who Remains before her memories of him was erased shortly after. The discovery angered Renslayer and prompted her to help Miss Minutes in abandoning the Citadel so they could reclaim the TVA for themselves.[2]

Loki revisited the Citadel in its undamaged state when he time slipped to mere moments before Sylvie killed He Who Remains, as he sought his knowledge on finding a solution to the Temporal Loom's overloading problem. Loki instead was informed that the Loom was a fail-safe designed primarily to protect the Sacred Timeline and prevent a new Multiversal War, leading him to realize that the Loom must be destroyed if the infinite branching timelines within the Multiverse were to survive. After Loki destroys the Loom, he returns to the End of Time as the last remnants of the Citadel crumble down, taking He Who Remains' throne to become the new Keeper of Time.[8]

Trivia[]

  • In the comics, universes and multiverses go through cycles; the end of time refers to the end of a cycle. After the end of time, the multiverse renews itself.
  • The building and architecture was carved in situ from the asteroid where the Citadel is. The material of the asteroid is also in many places of the Time Variance Authority Office, built by He Who Remains.[9]
