Ana Helstrom and Chris Yen[src]

Chris Yen is Ana Helstrom's business partner and her closest friend.

Biography[]

This is an in-depth biography of Chris Yen. For an abridged overview, see Marvel Database's article on the same character.

Early Life[]

Meeting Ana Helstrom[]

Chris Yen met Ana Helstrom after she was kidnapped by her father and put into foster care with him. She spent several a long time crying for her mother, and Yen saw her cry in her sleep and sometimes rush into their foster father's workshop to hide the fact that she was. Yen remembered this, although he later came to believe she his in the basement rather than the workshop.[2] They had an abusive foster father, whom Helstrom eventually killed. Yen helped cover up the murder,[3] and the two decided to open an auction house after being introduced to auctioneering by a friend who was already in the business[4] and performed vigilante justice together on the side.[3] This job required a lot of hours, although Yen found time to form a relationship with San Francisco Police Department officer Derrick Jackson. However, Jackson became disgruntled with Helstrom's business as Yen's demanding hours took him away from Jackson.[5]

Aiding Ana Helstrom[]

Assassination of Edward Tate[]

Yen and Ana Helstrom discuss Edward Tate

Chris Yen and Ana Helstrom held an auction together in order to draw out and kill Edward Tate, who had previously killed seven women. Yen and Helstrom watched as Tate bid on a sword formerly owned by Napoleon Bonaparte. Yen told Helstrom that he would make sure things are taken care of, as Helstrom reminded Yen to turn off security feeds. He watched as Ana led Tate to the rood of the auction house, and then left as the two started to get close. Helstrom killed Tate, although she threw him off the roof. Yen covered by creating a fake suicide note to make sure it looked like a suicide.

Ana and Yen Ready to Kill

The next day, Helstrom returned to work at their auction house and asked Yen about the auctioning business. Yen scolded her for not thanking him and being reckless, although Helstrom claimed that Tate simply fell off of the roof and that it was an accident. Helstrom realized that she had missed a call from Caretaker, and Yen mentioned having received one at work as well, talking about a crypt in Colma. Yen asked Helstrom if they were going to finish the books for the auction, but Helstrom left Yen behind to do it himself. Yen called after her, although she did not answer.[6]

Left by Ana Helstrom[]

Yen later called Helstrom about another client, and the conversation led to Helstrom wondering why the client should dictate how they do business. Yen began to explain that they were in need of money, although Helstrom quickly hung up on him when she received another call.[6]

Yen Upset Ana Left

Yen calls Ana Helstrom

Yen attended a meeting on Helstrom's behalf, in which he was asked about whether an antique belonged to Atilla the Hun. Yen called Helstrom, who had decided to visit Portland. He reported that newspapers and the police had believed that Edward Tate killed himself. He also mentioned the meeting she missed, and she explained that she had personal issues to deal with. Yen began to get concerned that Helstrom was hiding something from him, but Helstrom hung up on her before he could express that concern.

Taker and Yen Talk

Yen talks to Caretaker

Yen continued working at the auction house, placing the antique that may or may not have belonged to Atilla in the vault. Yen suddenly became attracted to the Keeper's Skull, which had previously been covered by Helstrom. Entranced by the Skull, Yen reached out to touch, but was frightened when Caretaker appeared, loudly clearing his throat to get Yen's attention. Caretaker asked where Helstrom was, since she was not answering phone calls, but Yen explained that he did not know either.

Yen Sees Skull

Yen is swayed by the skull

When Yen explained that Helstrom said she had personal issues to deal with, Caretaker deduced that she had returned to Portland to visit her family. Yen became upset because they had to run their business, but Caretaker explained that certain things were more important. Caretaker told Yen that one of the axe was a fake, and Yen swore. Caretaker then asked whether Helstrom had taken the skull with her, and Yen pretended to not understand the question. Yen called Helstrom, scolding her for lying about where she was and asking her to call him back.

Skull Biting Yen

When Caretaker was gone, he put the skull on the floor of the auction house and stared at it. Entranced by the skull, he opened its mouth and allowed it to bite down on him, enjoying the sensation.[7]

Assassination of Cameron Tate[]

Yen kills Cameron Tate

The auction house was then visited by Edward Tate's brother, Cameron Tate, who was aware that Edward had not killed himself like the media said. Yen told Cameron that he was aware that he helped his brother choose murder victims and sometimes kill them. Cameron said that Yen had no proof, but Yen simply said that proof would not be necessary and asked the Keeper's Skull what he should do after feeling its pull, confusing Tate. Following the skull's advice, Yen retrieved a battle axe and used it to kill Cameron.[7] He left with the skull without cleaning anything up or turning the alarm on.[5]

Attacking Kthara[]

YenDrinking

Under the Keeper's Skull's influence, Yen traveled to Portland with the skull, breaking into an underground system underneath a park. He brought the skull to the area underneath Kthara's room, where it started attacking her. Yen found himself surrounded by spiders, scaring him as he worked to take the skull out of its bag and set it down. While underground, Yen continued to have the skull bite down on his arm, eventually becoming hungry. Under the skull's influence, he picked up a spider carcass and put it in his mouth, chewing on it. However, he briefly snapped out of the influence and yelled at the skull, saying that dead spiders were not okay as he struggled to get the taste out of his mouth. He began to repeat "It's not okay" and curled up in a ball, putting his head down. He eventually began drinking as he continued watching the skull, which showed him its eye.[5] Yen ate mice for sustenance, later leaving the spot he was in.

When Ana Helstrom found Yen, he was at a near feral stage. She approached him gently, hoping to convince him to hand the skull to her so they could return to normal. He did not want to be her errand boy anymore, which he perceived as their normal, but Helstrom attempted to convince him to give her the skull. Daimon Helstrom arrived and watched Ana talk to him, apologizing for lying to her. She told him the truth, that he father had escaped and that the skull was the only way to stop him. She offered to take him out in exchange for the skull, but Yen continued to refuse. Daimon tried to do things his way, but a fight began with the siblings as they tried to save the people they cared about. Yen took that momentary distraction from the argument and disappeared.

Yen took a latter into Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health and followed a group of nurses and orderlies to Victoria Helstrom's room. He uncovered the skull, preparing to use it to help Victoria, when Daimon suddenly knocked him out and nearly destroyed the skull, only being stopped by Victoria.[8]

Escape from Saint Teresa's[]

Yen is committed

Yen was committed into Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health and appeared to be back to his normal self. Ana Helstrom talked to him, eating chips together, and asked what Yen experienced, but he explained that he did not understand exactly what was happening. Yen apologized for trying to kill Victoria Helstrom, but Ana assured him that she was not upset about it. Yen brought up the fact that back when she was younger she used to cry for her mom, assuring her that it was okay for her to want her mother. Helstrom, however, could not take the lecture and got up to leave. Yen continued scratching at the bandages on his arms, almost drawing blood. He got up to leave and acted like he is fine, but Helstrom did not believe him and pushed him back in, closing the door as she left. Yen yelled for the Keeper's Skull as Helstrom and Ellis walked away.

Later, the hospital was attacked and all of the patients were released, including Yen. As he left, he grabbed an axe from the fire safety installment on the wall and went looking for the Keeper's Skull. Yen found Magoth, who had possessed Dr. Edgar Lawrence, and hit him with the axe, killing him and reclaiming the skull. Ana Helstrom found Yen with the skull, and he claimed that he got it for her. However, when she reached out for it, he did not give it to her. Ana told Yen that he was right about her missing her mother, correcting a part of the story about her crying that he got wrong. This convinced Yen to give the skull to her, and he ran off with Helstrom and Hastings.

He watched the Helstrom family debated about whether to use the skull, and Victoria choose to sacrifice herself, when Basar suddenly attacked. He threw Yen to the side and grabbed Victoria, taking her down the elevator. Yen got himself up while Daimon and Ana ran down the stairs with the skull.[2] He was put back in his hospital room. The next day, Ana Helstrom came and retrieved him, taking him out of the hospital. They passed Gabriella Rosetti and Jolene Spivey, continuing to walk as Rosetti tried to talk to Helstrom.[3]

Returning to San Francisco[]

YenAndAna

Yen is San Francisco

Yen and Ana Helstrom returned to San Francisco and went home to his boyfriend, Derrick Jackson, lying to him about the fictional business trip overseas that Helstrom made up to cover for him. He forgot his phone charger, so he went to the auction house to retrieve it, surprised to find Helstrom there. She explained that they needed to get back to work, and Yen told her that he just needed his charger. He encouraged Helstrom to take time off, and Helstrom said that she was tired of people telling her what to do. Yen explained that he was tired of skulls, possessed people, and Helstrom's family. He told Helstrom that Jackson remained suspicious of their business, and this led to an argument in which Helstrom said that she did not care about Jackson. Upset, Yen told her that if she was going to remain angry, she should have stayed in Portland to fight with her brother. Helstrom asked him to get to work, and Yen began to talk about auctioneering meetings, but Helstrom explained that she wanted someone to kill, implying that it was the only way to deal with her anger.

YenAndCustomer

Yen later met with a client of the auction house, and Helstrom pulled him aside, upset that he had not brought her someone to kill. Yen explained that he had decided not to help her kill people for the purpose of emotional fulfillment, telling her that he would only do it for the purpose of justice, like with Helstrom's first kill, their abusive foster father. Helstrom threw a heavy crate at him, but he dodged it, telling her that his decision was final. He walked away, telling her to pull herself together, since Jackson was visiting for lunch.

Derrick Jackson argues with Yen

When Jackson came, the two talked about how he felt as though he had been ghosted, and Yen apologized, asking how to make it up to him. Jackson asked him to work on balancing work and life, and Yen agreed. Jackson asked whether Helstrom was blackmailing Yen to make him work so many hours, such as with a video of him murdering someone, concerning Yen. Yen simply said that they had known each other for a long time. Helstrom walked by and asked Yen how long they would be, and Yen told her that he had already told her about the lunch. When Helstrom again asked if it would be long, Jackson stood up for Yen, saying that the way she was talking to him as unacceptable, despite Yen's protests. Jackson suggested that Helstrom exercise to relieve the stress of her job, and she thanked him and walked away.

Yen later found Helstrom looking for a new victim and scolded her, saying that they should lay low. Helstrom momentarily distracted Yen by asking whether "lay low" or "lie low" was more grammatical, when someone knocked on the door. Yen took over the search while Helstrom answered the door, and Jackson entered, angry. Yen closed the laptop as Jackson asked how it was possible that he was logged into the San Francisco Police Department database both at home and at the auction house, and Yen and Helstorm feigned ignorance. Jackson told Yen that if there were any unauthorized logins, he would have to explain which files were accessed and why, such as Edward Tate's file, who died the night of their auction. Jackson said that he would figure out what was happening and left, upsetting Yen.

Yen got back to work while Helstrom left, and he later saw her return, upset. She found her after having destroyed a box which contained the gifts from the people her father had killed, crying. Helstrom apologized to Yen for nearly doing something that would have made her like her father. Yen comforted her, saying that she did not do the thing she was apologizing for since she was not like her father. Helstrom told Yen that her family needed her, and he agreed, hugging her and including himself in her family.[3]

Becoming a Keeper Demon[]

Yen chokes up an eyeball

Yen spent time with Derrick Jackson as he painted the walls of his house, and admitted that he hated the color but let him pick it anyway as an apology. The two kiss, but Yen sensed something had changed and dropped the paint roller. He left, saying he would get something to clean it, and went into the bedroom to take the bandages off of his arm, finding symbols on it. He looked through a medical cabinet for something that would help, and became frustrated when he found nothing. He began feeling as though he were choking, and saw in the mirror and eye in his mouth, causing him to panic. He called Caretaker to ask what was happening and explained the situation with him. Although he was at first dismissive, he became curious when he mentioned feeling as though his actions with the Keeper's Skull were not over.[9]

ChrisYenIsNewKeeper

Yen at Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health

Yen went to Portland and visited Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health, where he found Ana and Victoria Helstrom and told them about his predicament. Ana and Yen met Caretaker at the hospital to show him the marks on his arm. Caretaker told Yen that he had become a Keeper Demon. Yen panicked, not wanting the job, asking Caretaker to do whatever was possible to stop it. However, Caretaker explained that his new position could be a good thing for Daimon Helstrom, who had been possessed by Basar. They went back to Saint Teresa's, where Yen examined Ana's father's dagger and told them that the only way to reforge the weapon was with Ana's fire and blood. Although Ana was at first hesitant to do it, Victoria agreed to help and Ana hesitantly decided she would. He took them to Victoria's old hospital room and told them not to let go until it was done, and went outside in case the room caught fire. He watched intently through the viewing panel as the knife was reforged successfully.

Yen stops Basar

Yen and Helstrom went to the abandoned carnival where the demons were keeping Rosetti, and Helstrom told him to look for Rosetti while she looked for her brother. Despite Yen's objections, the two split up and Yen looked through the carnival. Yen found Basar and Helstrom fighting, and with his new Keeper powers managed to hold Basar at bay. In this moment, Helstrom's dagger extended to a long fiery spear, which she used to kill Basar. Yen then realized that Kthara had already been born, so Ana gave Daimon Helstrom the dagger and he rushed to kill the demons, with Ana and Yen following behind. They cut off Magoth, who was trying to flee with the child, before Daimon killed the demon. They watched Daimon struggle to talk to Rosetti, who was too distressed to respond and could only repeat a prayer.[1]

Accepting His Role[]

Kthara's new form was brought to Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health, where Yen watched her to make sure the child did not do anything unusual. Ana Helstrom checked in on him to make sure that nothing had happened, and Yen asked when Daimon Helstrom would be returning to care for the child. Ana said that he would once he was sure the child would not destroy the world, but Yen explained that it was his job due to the markings, since he could stop her from hurting others and herself, asking for Helstrom's help and her father's knife, with which she performed a ritual. Yen told Helstrom that he was going to return to San Francisco and try to rekindle his relationship with Derrick Jackson. However, he instead stole the child from the Helstrom family and started raising her on his own.

A month later, Yen went to the dock with Kthara, asking her why she wanted another oatmeal crunch bar when she had just had one. He sensed a presence and was approached by Marduk Kurios, who was happy that Yen was the new Keeper Demon. Yen told Kthara to run. The man, surprised by the name, and instructed her to remember her real name, Lily, to remember who he was, her father. Helstrom wanted to leave with Lily, and Yen explained that he could not hurt her. Helstrom responded by taking out several people behind him. Thus, Yen gave her up. The two walked away as Helstrom continued killing people and Yen looked around, realizing what he had done.[1]
