- "Do you know what it's like to see your home world destroyed? Almost brought to its knees by a madman?"
- ―Tony Stark to Grandmaster[src]
The Chitauri Invasion was an offensive orchestrated by Loki with the goal of ruling Earth. The invasion was halted by Iron Man during the Battle of New York.
Background[]
Thanos gave Loki the Scepter and an army of Chitauri so that the latter could take over Earth and acquire the Tesseract. Once the job was done, Loki was to return the Scepter and the Tesseract to Thanos.[1]
Invasion[]
Battle of New York[]
- "With his home on the verge of destruction, Tony Stark, self-made Iron Man, made the ultimate hero's play. But in this universe, Tony never made it home."
- ―The Watcher[src]
Loki got the Chitauri to Earth via a wormhole, and they began ravaging New York City. The Avengers, a team of heroes, fought back against the Chitauri and the Leviathans. A nuclear missile was sent to the city in the hopes of stopping the invasion in New York, which would doom millions of civilian lives.
As the nuke honed in on the city, Iron Man intercepted it and redirected it into the wormhole, where it collided with and destroyed the Chitauri Command Center. This caused all the Chitauri and Leviathans on Earth to collapse. Iron Man then began falling back towards the wormhole, but just before he reached it, it closed, leaving him in space.[1]
Aftermath[]
- "It's time to go home. Pepper's waiting for me."
- ―Tony Stark[src]
Pepper Potts became the acting CEO of Stark Industries due to Tony Stark's assumed death. In actuality, Stark crash-landed on Sakaar, where he met the oppressive ruler Grandmaster. He also met Gamora, the daughter of Thanos, as she tried to kill him in retaliation for his prevention of the invasion. Stark soon challenged the Grandmaster to a race in which the winner would become the new ruler of Sakaar.
Stark won, but Grandmaster attempted to skirt the rules and declare himself the winner. However, an accident with a Melt Stick caused Grandmaster to liquefy in front of all of his subjects, who elected Valkyrie, a former member of the Asgardian Valkyries, the new leader of Sakaar in his place. Stark then left Sakaar with Gamora and helped her kill Thanos, preventing him from attempting another invasion of Earth or any other planet again.[1]
