- "Forty-seven known alien objects hit the ground after the portal closed above Manhattan. All dormant, all dead. Except this one."

The Chitauri Gun was the standard-issue weapon of the Chitauri troops that invaded Earth during the Battle of New York. A directed-energy weapon, these guns were left in New York City after the Chitauri were defeated by the Avengers. Some were recovered and studied by S.H.I.E.L.D. in an attempt to reverse-engineer their unique properties.
History
Battle of New York
When the Chitauri army invaded New York City during Loki's attempt to conquer Earth, Chitauri Guns were used excessively as their main weapon.
At the end of the battle, the Chitauri Command Center was destroyed by Iron Man, effectively sapping power from all Chitauri paraphernelia on the battlefield. The Chitauri Guns were all rendered inactive and taken by S.H.I.E.L.D.[1]
Item 47
After the battle, one Chitauri Gun, later dubbed "Item 47", was found by Benjamin Pollack and Claire Wise, a struggling but loving couple. Being technically talented, Pollack managed to reactivate the gun, and the couple decided to use the gun to successfully rob many banks, saving them from their financial dilemma.
S.H.I.E.L.D. soon caught wind of the activities, and sent Agent Jasper Sitwell to neutralize the robbers. Impressed with Pollack's ability to re-activate the weapon, Agent Sitwell offered both a place within S.H.I.E.L.D., Pollack in the R&D Think-Tank, and Wise as assistant to Agent Felix Blake.[2]
Owned by HYDRA
By the year 2014, HYDRA managed to acquire multiple Chitauri Guns, powering them with the Scepter used by Loki during the Battle of New York.[3] HYDRA eventually developed their own weapons using the Chitauri technology, using them as weapons for the HYDRA cells operating under Doctor Jensen[4] and Wolfgang von Strucker.[5]
Behind the Scenes
- In a deleted scene from The Avengers, a police man picked up a Chitauri Gun in the middle of the battle and shot a Chitauri. However, he was shot before he could continue.
