For the Senator who worked with Wilson Fisk, see Cherryh

Cherry is a former New York City Police Department detective and a private investigator who works closely with Murdock & McDuffie.

Biography[]

This is an in-depth biography of Cherry. For an abridged overview, see Marvel Database's article on the same character.

NYPD Detective[]

Police Detective[]

"Daredevil. White Tiger. They're the future. We're obsolete."
"Oh. Spare me the dinosaur's lament. We're the thin blue line, not them."
"We get sued and they get cheered."
―Cherry and Angie Kim[src]

Cherry served in the New York City Police Department for many years and attained the rank of Detective, where he worked alongside fellow detective Angie Kim. However, with the rise of vigilantes in New York City, Cherry felt that the NYPD had become obsolete, and noted that vigilantes were cheered for their actions while police officers were getting sued. During his time as Detective, he befriended Matt Murdock, Foggy Nelson, and Karen Page.[1]

Attack on Josie's Bar[]

Cherry and Kim

Cherry drinks with Angie Kim

"I've got an active shooter. Active shooter at Josie's Bar. Active shooter at Josie's Bar."
―Cherry to NYPD Dispatch[src]

Cherry eventually chose to retire from the NYPD, and a retirement party was held for him at Josie's Bar in Hell's Kitchen. He sat with Angie Kim, who questioned his decision to retire, and Cherry informed her of his belief that they had become obsolete due to vigilantism. Cherry then asked Josie for another round, but when he attempted to pay, Josie notified him that his drinks were free and raised a toast in Cherry's celebration.

Cherry learns that Matt is Daredevil

Cherry discovers that Daredevil is Matt Murdock

The bar was then attacked by Bullseye, who shot three people, including Foggy Nelson, before throwing smoke grenades into the bar. Cherry and Kim helped evacuate some of the patrons outside as Daredevil arrived to fight Bullseye, and Cherry informed NYPD dispatch that shots had been fired at Josie's Bar. Pulling out their guns, Cherry and Kim returned inside Josie's, and Cherry made his way upstairs, where Daredevil and Bullseye had gone. As he reached the roof, Cherry saw an unmasked Daredevil crying, and was shocked to discover that Daredevil was none other than the blind attorney Matt Murdock, who had impulsively shoved Bullseye off of the roof.[1]

Private Investigator[]

Working for Matt Murdock[]

"You wanna tell me why you invited your hatchet man?"
"He's not my hatchet... He's my investigator."
Kirsten McDuffie and Matt Murdock[src]

As Matt Murdock retired from being Daredevil due to the death of Foggy Nelson, Cherry decided to keep Murdock's identity a secret. Having officially retired from the New York City Police Department, Cherry became a private investigator. Murdock, who left Hell's Kitchen and formed a high-scale law firm with Kirsten McDuffie known as Murdock & McDuffie, hired Cherry to be his personal private investigator.[1]

Investigating Fisk's Finances[]

Matt speaks to Cherry

Murdock asks Cherry about his findings

"Well, if this city actually elects him, then, maybe New York's getting the mayor it deserves."
"You ask me, that's pretty goddamn cynical, Matt."
Matt Murdock and Cherry[src]

In 2026, Cherry was hired by Matt Murdock to investigate Wilson Fisk, who had recently announced his bid to run in the mayoral race. Cherry spoke to his former colleagues at the New York City Police Department and went through Fisk's financials for campaign. Upon the completion of his investigation, Cherry went to the Murdock & McDuffie Law Office and waited in the conference room for Murdock to return. When Murdock arrived, Cherry remarked that he would have investigated Fisk regardless of the request.

Cherry discusses Fisk's finances

Cherry states that Fisk's money is clean

Cherry then shared his findings with Murdock, notifying him that while half of the NYPD despised Fisk, the other half loved him; additionally, he disclosed that all of Fisk's financials were legitimate with every dollar accounted for, and credited Vanessa Fisk for her investment prowess. Murdock scoffed that Fisk sounded like he actually cared about the city, but when Cherry tried to explain that Fisk was not a good person, Murdock interrupted him and replied that he knew that already. Murdock then stated that if New York City ended up voting in Fisk, they were getting the mayor that they deserved, and Cherry chastised Murdock for having a cynical perspective.[1]

Hector Ayala Case[]

White Tiger Secret[]
Cherry finds White Tiger Suit

Cherry discovers Ayala's White Tiger Suit

"An NYPD cop is dead, and anytime that happens, a big machine gets turned on to try and figure out what went wrong, and to punish whoever killed the cop."
―Cherry to Soledad[src]
This section needs a rewrite

When Hector Ayala was accused of killing police officer Kel Shanahan, Cherry, along with McDuffie, went to visit Ayala's wife, Soledad Ayala at her apartment in order to tell her what happened with Hector. When Soledad asked if Hector had a chance, Cherry told her that Kel Shanahan is dead and that every time a cop is killed, a big machine is turned to punish whoever killed the cop. Cherry asked Soledad if he can get Hector's suit for court, and Soledad explained that it was on the bed. When Soledad offered to retrieve the suit for Cherry, he insisted he could get it himself. Making his way to the bedroom, Cherry examined what he could find until he noticed a box under the bed and opened it, revealing the White Tiger Suit and Amulet of Power.[3]

Meeting with Matt Murdock[]
"You know I know he was telling the truth."
"And we both know it doesn't matter if you can't prove it. And for what it's worth, I like the Matt Murdock I've seen this year. The guy that went out and found his own way, got out of the Kitchen, wears a... normal suit. He's doing some good."

"First of all, it's not a party. I'm not your man. And this is just for me to get you on the stand without sweating and puking."
