Chechnya, officially known as the Chechen Republic, is a federal subject of Russia. From 1991 to 2000, it was known as the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria after it declared de-facto independence.

During the Chechen Wars, Chechnya was a hotspot for rebel activity and guerrilla warfare for independence from the Russian government. Following the Second Chechen War, Chechnya was reincorporated into Russia.[1]

Amongst the international community, Chechnya had a reputation of being one of the best places in the world to train a mercenary.[2] Chechnya became known because of its unsafe state, as crimes such as the kidnapping of children were considered very usual.[3]
