"'Chaves. A city known for its sedimentary basins.' I don't–"
"Guess what 'chaves' means in English."
"Let me guess. 'Keys.'"
Phil Coulson, Melinda May, and Skye[src]

Chaves is a city in the northern part of Portugal.

History[]

Kree Diviners[]

The Kree waged a very long war with very high casualties, so, in order to create more soldiers, a Kree faction descended on Earth in order to modify some humans' DNA. The Kree shut down the experiments and hid the Diviners used to hold the Terrigen Crystals in the city of Chaves, far away from the city built for the experiments.[1]

Excavation[]

"Chaves, Portugal... We've seen that name before."
"It was in Whitehall's SSR file."
"The site of his dig back in 1945, where he first found the Obelisk."
Phil Coulson and Melinda May[src]

Werner Reinhardt having heard different tales and myths about "stars that fell from the heavens" and "blue angels" bringing gifts to mankind, began to investigate and realized that extraterrestrial beings had visited Earth and left behind ancient artifacts.

Reinhardt managed to track them to Chaves, where he conducted an excavation in 1945, finding the Obelisk, an item capable of turning living beings into stone upon touch. He took it back to Austria where, over the years, this Obelisk became the object of Reinhardt's obsession.[1]

Chase of Vin-Tak[]

Capture[]

"That's where the Kree was heading. That's where I was chasing him."
Sif to Phil Coulson[src]

Vin-Tak went to Chaves once he managed to get rid of Sif, the Asgardian warrior sent to stop him, and entered a cave where ancient Kree had hidden a stockpile of Diviners. He managed to obtain the crate where the artifacts were stored, but he was ambushed by S.H.I.E.L.D. when he exited the cave.

Phil Coulson ordered Vin-Tak not to move and to raise his hands. Vin-Tak defiantly told them that they would not stop them, and tried to open the case. However, before he could do, Lance Hunter asked Vin-Tak if he wanted to bet about if they would be able to stop him or not, and shot an Electric Net Grenade that managed to restrain Vin-Tak.[1]
