Chafa is the first episode of the first season of Echo.
Synopsis[]
After her mother's tragic death, young Maya is forced to leave her hometown of Tamaha, Oklahoma, and move to New York City where she meets Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, who raises her to be a ruthless assassin. After learning that Fisk had her father killed, Maya kills Kingpin and flees NYC.
Plot[]
Living in Oklahoma with her family, Bonnie tells a young Maya Lopez the story of the first Choctaw people Chafa, who saved her people from a collapsing cave. Maya asks her mother Taloa Lopez for some hot chocolate, but Taloa says that they do not have it and takes Maya with her to buy some. However, as someone cut the brakes on Taloa car, the two get into the car crash, with Taloa dying instantly and Maya losing a leg due to a shard of glass. William Lopez comes to the hospital, where he meets with Chula Battiest and Skully. Chula blames William for what happened with her daughter, before William visits Maya and tells her what happened with her mother.
With Chula demanding him to leave, William takes Maya with her leaves to New York City, while Bonnie stays behind in Oklahoma. In New York, William becomes a partner of Wilson Fisk, who also grows close with Maya, while she grows up to be a formidable fighter. However, one day Maya witnesses her father and his men being massacred by Ronin, which breaks her heart. She grows reckless and even gets arrested, so Fisk comes to pick her up. He tells Maya that he understands her pain, sharing that when he was twelve, his father was killed just like William. Fisk tells Maya that she has greatness inside her and offers her a job to channel her rage in a constructive way.
Together with Fisk's men, Maya participates in a raid on a criminal gang that was planning a move on Fisk's territories. She manages to kill numerous gang members, before being ambushed by Daredevil, who was tracking down the same gang. Maya fights the vigilante, albeit unsuccessfully, but Fisk praises her performance in the mission nontheless. Maya becomes one of Fisk's most trusted subordinates, while he promises to find Ronin and let her get revenge for William's death. Eventually, she finds out that Ronin is Clint Barton, who reveals that Fisk is manipulating Maya and that he was the one who wanted William to die. Maya later finds Fisk at and ignores his pleas, shooting him in the head.
Months later, a wounded Maya manages to escape from Fisk's men and flee New York, arriving to her hometown in Tamaha. She takes refuge at her old house, where she is found by her cousin Biscuits. Maya tells him that she came for business and that her return to Oklahoma must be kept between them, noting that he cannot tell Chula or Bonnie about her. Maya comes to Black Crow's SkateLife to meet with her uncle Henry Lopez and get some help from him, unaware that Vickie Tyson tipped someone about her. As Henry's friend helps Maya with her wounds, she tells him that she needs one Fisk Shipping car to send Fisk's men a message, but Henry refuses to help Maya bring a war to their town.
Meanwhile back in New York, Fisk recovers from a gunshot, blind in one eye.
