Chafa was the first Choctaw woman and ancestor of Maya Lopez who helped her family escape the collapsing Nanih Waiya. She then was able to echo to many of her descendants and help them in times of need.
Biography[]
The First Choctaw[]
Saving Her Family[]
Inside the Nanih Waiya, Chafa and her family of Clay People emerged from the puddles. Chafa then walked over to the central puddle and stuck her palms out, seeing they were glowing yellow. A Biskinik then landed on Chafa's palm and looked at her before flying away. Suddenly, the Nanih Waiya started collapsing. Chafa stuck her hands up to hold the ceiling, but the weight was too much as it buried everyone.
Chafa emerged on the surface, immediately shielding her eyes from the Sun. Her skin then hardened and flaked as she turned into a human, along with everyone else. Looking out onto her people, she told them to follow her. The group then walked into the forest together as Chafa's legend became famous among the Choctaw.[1]
Legacy[]
Tales[]
- "Your grandmother could trace your roots back to the first Choctaw. Chafa and the ancestors would watch out for family in times of need."
- ―Skully to Maya Lopez[src]
Chafa would go down as a legend in the Choctaw community for saving her family and being considered the first Choctaw. While playing in a tent, a young Bonnie told Chafa's story to Maya Lopez.[1] A statue of Chafa was also kept in Skully's Pawn Shop.[2]
Echoing[]
Upon Chafa's death, her life happened to echo throughout generations of her family. In 1200 A.D., Lowak and the Choctaw were facing banishment from the lands during the Ishtaboli Tribal Match. Lowak soon saw visions of Chafa, which allowed her to gain the strength to push through the Cherokee and score a goal for her team.[3]
In the late 19th Century, Tuklo was having trouble becoming the woman she wanted to be because her father would tell her that men are man killers and women and man givers; therefore she could not be in the Lighthorsemen. Tuklo would often hope to be able to be on the Lighthorsemen but could not do so until she heard a call. She chased it and found that the Lighthorsemen were under attack. Through visions of Chafa and Lowak, Tuklo killed everyone of them and cemented her place in history.[2]
While giving birth to Taloa, Chula Battiest had a lot of complications. She was taken out into the forest where she endured extreme pain until she looked up and saw visions of Chafa, Lowak and Tuklo. Through this, she gained enough strength to not only deliver Taloa but survive the events.
This echoing continued into Maya Lopez, who had a week of events where she would see visions of Chafa, Lowak, Tuklo and Battiest without knowing anything of what they meant. She eventually talked to Battiest, who told her that it was what she saw while giving birth to Taloa.[4] Later, Lopez was able to see an illusion of her mother, Taloa, who told her even more about these illusions and how it was generations echoing to her. Lopez used this to channel her ancestors, including Chafa to her during a confrontation with Kingpin. The ancestors gave her, Battiest and Bonnie strength to defeat him.[5]
