- "The Red Skull has taken cover here, at Castle de Krake in the Black Forest."
"No wonder HYDRA targeted Rogers. You'd need the Stomper to get close." - ―Peggy Carter and John Flynn[src]
Castle de Krake was an important military base in the 1940s, located in Germany's forests, which served as HYDRA's foremost stronghold during World War II after Red Skull retrieved the Tesseract from the HYDRA Stomper.
History[]
Johann Schmidt's Hideout[]
Following the rise of Nazism in Germany, Castle de Krake was used by HYDRA as their headquarters during World War II after Red Skull managed to retrieve the Tesseract from the HYDRA Stomper upon setting him up in a train full of explosives. Having Rogers chained with his armor away from his reach, Red Skull decided to open a dimensional portal with the Tesseract to bring a beast to conquer the world. Tipped off about this by the captive Arnim Zola, Captain Carter and her fellow soldiers decided to break into Castle de Krake to stop HYDRA once and for all.
Captain Carter led the attack on Castle de Krake and the Howling Commandos attacked all the HYDRA soldiers while Carter went to face Red Skull. By the time Carter arrived, as Bucky Barnes and the Commandos freed Rogers, Red Skull succeeded in opening the portal and some of the monster's tentacles crossed the portal. However, rather than obeying him as he expected, Red Skull was grabbed by the tentacles and crushed to death. The monster proceeded to attack all HYDRA soldiers and Castle de Krake started to crumble. Howard Stark tried to close the portal, but was unable to do so due to the systems being written in German, and Rogers arrived but was likewise unable to do anything. Despite knowing that she would possibly not see her friends again, Carter ultimately chose to sacrifice herself and pushed herself and the monster into the portal, which was later closed, saving everyone present at Castle de Krake.[1]
Trivia[]
- Although Peggy Carter calls this location 'Castle de Krake', the name on the map in the SSR's war room is 'Castle Krake', without 'de'.
