- "I gotta be honest with you, I'm surprised you kept this place. Thought it would hold too many memories of your rebellious youth."
- ―Esther Smith to Caretaker[src]
Caretaker's House is a residence owned by Caretaker, where he was taken to be tortured into revealing Marduk Kurios's dagger.
History[]
Rebellious Youth[]
A boy named Henry grew up in what would later become his house, in which he experienced a rebellious youth,[1] attempting to avoid the war between demons and humans.[2] One Christmas, Henry returned home to find that his brother had been possessed by a demon. He could not save his brother, who died. This ultimately resulted in Henry taking on the name Caretaker and joining the war.[3]
Kidnapping of Caretaker[]
Caretaker's loyalty to the Blood was called into question following a mass killing of all the members working at the Blood Hotel, so the Blood went to his home and began looking for Marduk Kurios's dagger. They kidnapped Caretaker and brought him to his house, where Caretaker and Esther Smith reunited.
Later, Lee went out shopping and returned, walking past Smith, who was questioning Caretaker. She told him that Louise Hastings was looking for him. She told him that Kthara had escaped from Saint Teresa Center for Mental Health, and Caretaker asked her to let him go so that he could do his job, which Smith said was to keep Daimon and Ana Helstrom under control, which she believed he had failed. Caretaker explained that Daimon and Ana are against the demons as well, and Smith asked why he was on the wrong side. However, Caretaker said that the Helstroms were on the same side as the Blood, asking them to judge them for their actions, not their lineage. Smith expressed surprise that he kept his house, talking about memories it likely had of his rebellious youth. She mentioned how he must wonder if joining the Blood earlier would have prevented his family's deaths. She apologized, and then turned her attention to Caretaker's knife collection, asking which one he found with Ana Helstrom. Caretaker said that he buried that knife, and that the collection was simply stuff he could not sell at auction. Esther determined that they would do things the hard way.
She had Lee open his shirt, and he did, revealing his scar. Smith told Caretaker that putting demons in comas would not contained to work, and that they needed something to kill demons. She explained that she knew that he still had Marduk Kurios's dagger, and that his scar would reveal which knife it was. While Lee tested knives, Smith called Daimon Helstrom, asking for help finding Kthara. He refused, and Smith asked why he had a hard time trusting them while Caretaker and Louise Hastings did, confusing Helstrom. Smith told him that they decided to keep him and his sister apart so that the Blood would turn the other way when something involved the two of them. Helstrom hung up, still refusing to help.
Smith returned and found Lee still testing knives, as Caretaker was talked about innocent lives lost during war. Smith asked whether Caretaker considered Ana Helstrom innocent, and the two debated the point before Helstrom found the correct dagger. Caretaker asked Smith not to use the knife, saying that it would bring out the worst in demons, which he refused to take part in.[1]
