Set in the world of Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World, A Hero Looks Like You is a heartwarming picture book about a young boy named DJ who steps up to help Captain America, his favorite Super Hero, and discovers along the way that heroes don’t always look big or strong or wear a suit. Sometimes, they might even look like him.
From New York Times best-selling author Kwame Mbalia and New York Times best-selling illustrator Nikkolas Smith, this inspiring story shows readers anyone can choose to be a hero.[1]
Plot[]
DJ excitedly prepares for school, ready to attend a celebration of Hero Day. He gets on the bus and prepares with his friends as his school takes a trip to the Smithsonian Institution, where Sam Wilson is presenting Solar-Battery Drones to bring electricity to underprivileged neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. Wilson gives a speech saying that anyone can be a hero. However, he is interrupted by an explosion as a group of soldiers crash in. They steal the drones and escape into the museum. The falling stage knocks over a tree which threatens to crush several civilians, including DJ. Wilson uses his shield to push the tree out of the way, leaving the shield behind as he chases the soldiers into the museum.
DJ tries to find someone to take the shield to Wilson, but everyone he sees is distracted by the emergency situation. DJ decides to take the shield to Wilson himself, struggling to lift it due to its weight. Inside the museum, DJ sees Wilson tying a soldier up and demanding to know who they work for, but the soldier refuses to answer. Another explosion occurs, creating a large gap in the floor that traps a group of tourists. Wilson uses a door as a bridge for the tourists to cross, but one man is filming on his phone and cannot see the gap. DJ places the shield under the man's feet across the gap, stopping him from falling.
DJ follows Wilson, who is chasing another soldier. Wilson ties the soldier up as she shouts that she is part of SERPENT. Wilson notices a tourist trapped by a fallen display and rescues her as she shouts for her dog. The dog falls off of a Bucky Barnes display, so DJ slides across the floor on the shield to catch the dog. The dog goes into the hood of DJ's hoodie, and DJ nicknames it Barky Barnes. DJ follows the soldiers upstairs where he confronts the leader of the group, who shouts that Wilson is trapped. Deciding to act, DJ shouts for Wilson and rolls the shield across the floor to him. Wilson takes the shield and defeats the soldiers, tying them up.
Wilson prepares to lecture DJ for running into danger, but DJ explains that he believed Wilson needed the shield in order to be a hero. Wilson empathizes and tells DJ that appearances do not make someone a hero. DJ asks if a small person can be a hero, so Wilson gestures to the people DJ helped and tells DJ that he was the one who saved them, not Wilson. He tells DJ that neighborhoods are going to get the drones because of him and says that a hero looks like DJ. Wilson asks DJ where he got his hoodie, and when DJ says that he made it, Wilson asks DJ to make one for him.
