"Because, if I'm being honest, I'm just as scared of myself as they are of me."
"Well, look around you. Ain't no one's afraid of you here, Bruce."
Bruce Banner and Sam Wilson[src]

Sam Wilson encountered Bruce Banner on a morning jog across Washington, D.C., where afterwards Banner revealed how he was trying different methods of controlling his stress.

Wilson suggested that Banner try talking and invited him to join a therapy session with the support group he ran. Wilson listened to Banner open up about how he felt about when he transformed into Hulk and understood that what Banner needed was a friend. Wilson invited Banner to join him and his sister, but an accident caused Banner to turn into Hulk. Wilson attempted to calm him down, but Hulk ran away, and later Banner, in an attempt to get rid of Hulk, accidentally created and unleashed Gamma Beasts into the world.[2]

"We know how to win this war. We've done it before. Monica and I will head to the Arctic and cut this thing off at the knees."
―Captain America to the Avengers[src]

When the Avengers all were killed during the Gamma War, Wilson took up the mantle of Captain America and led a new lineup of Avengers to fight the Gamma Beasts. Using their own mechanized battle suits, the Avengers were successful in chasing away the Gamma Beasts, ending the Gamma War.

Captain America speaks to the Avengers

Ten years after the Gamma War, Captain America continued to lead the Avengers, who all primarily operated out of their respective mechs. When Gamma Beasts were discovered attacking several cities, Captain America, joined by Monica Rambeau and Winter Soldier informed the rest of the team about the attacks. Nakia revealed that the Gamma Beasts were coming from the Arctic, so Wilson decided that he and Rambeau would head there to stop the spread, ignoring the request to call in Bruce Banner.

Captain America sees the Gamma Beasts

Captain America entered his mech and flew out to the Arctic with Rambeau, where they initially found nothing, but were soon attacked by a Gamma Beast. Two more appeared, so Captain America and Rambeau opened fire at them. However, when they fell below the ice, they discovered that there were thousands of Gamma Beasts emerging. From a distance, they watched the Gamma Beasts receive orders from the Apex, making them realize it was an invasion. Rambeau told Captain America he needed to talk to Banner, believing he was the only one that could help.[2]

Visiting Bruce Banner[]

What If S3 Trailer (67)

Wilson arrives at Astra Islands

"So that's it, huh? The rest of the world gets to fight your monsters while you just hide in fear?"
"Fear? What do you know about fear, Sam? About being a threat? A living force of destruction."
"I know you can't get past the things that scare you if you don't face them."
―Sam Wilson and Bruce Banner[src]

Despite being hurt by his failure to help Bruce Banner and not wishing to talk to him, Wilson agreed to speak with him and headed to his location on Astra Islands. Wilson was found by Banner, who led him to where he had been living, which was an abandoned nuclear combat bomber. Wilson was concerned by this, and only more so when he discovered the nuke, although Banner told him it was inactive.

Wilson asks Bruce Banner for his help

Banner asked why Wilson had visited him, so he revealed that there was a new Apex, which made Banner immediately refuse to assist, having spent years without turning into Hulk. Wilson stated that they would not be able to defeat the Gamma Beasts without his help, so Banner provided him with the Mighty Avenger Protocol. Wilson argued about Banner not facing his fears, but Banner revealed that he created the protocol to stop himself. Wilson claimed that he never saw Banner as a monster, and hoped that someday he would see that, too.[2]

Battle of New York[]

"The whole world is watching, people. Let's finish it this time."
―Captain America to the Avengers[src]

While flying away, Monica Rambeau called and informed Captain America that she and the Avengers had tracked the Apex to New York, so they were heading there. Captain America revealed the Mighty Avenger Protocol to them, stating that it was the only shot they had. When Captain America joined the Avengers in New York, they combined their mechs to form the Mighty Avenger. They were able to fight off many of the Gamma Beasts, but when they fought against the Apex, it released a burst of energy that knocked the Mighty Avenger down.[2]

Reaching Bruce Banner[]

"He still is."

The Avengers discovered Bruce Banner flying towards their location with the intention of dropping the nuke and releasing Gamma Radiation, which he would take all of. Captain America attempted to tell Banner he didn't need to do it, knowing he may never come back from it, but Banner told him he wasn't afraid. Captain America witnessed Banner now as Mega-Hulk fight the Apex in order to kill and replace it.

Hulk's Eye and Sam

Captain America speaks to Mega-Hulk

Captain America watched the fight, but when Mega-Hulk was being beaten, he decided to help out by firing the Mighty Avenger's fist at the Apex. Mega-Hulk defeated the Apex and became the new one, causing the Avengers to prepare to fire at him. Captain America ordered the team to stand down and he walked up to Mega-Hulk. Captain America told Mega-Hulk that he didn't see him as a monster but still as a friend, which got through to Mega-Hulk, who walked away, taking the Gamma Beasts with him to live on Astra Islands.[2]

Personality[]

"Look, I've never seen a monster when I look at you, Bruce. I've only ever seen my friend. I guess I hoped if you faced this thing, then maybe you'd see what I see, too."
―Sam Wilson to Bruce Banner[src]
