- "The name's O'Bengh, librarian for the Books of Cagliostro."
- ―O'Bengh to Doctor Strange[src]
O'Bengh was a renowned Master of the Mystic Arts who adopted the name Cagliostro. He was the author of the Book of Cagliostro and discoverer of the Eye of Agamotto, and was also as the keeper of his own private library. He provided guidance and support to Strange Supreme, who had come to his library, although he kept his identity as Cagliostro hidden from him.
Biography[]
Early Years[]
O'Bengh was a Master of the Mystic Arts who discovered the Eye of Agamotto, which contained the Time Stone. He spent centuries researching the Mystic Arts[1] and eventually took on the name Cagliostro.[2] He began recording his discoveries in the Book of Cagliostro and also founded the Library of Cagliostro. Cagliostro eventually left the Masters of the Mystic Arts and became the keeper of his library, which became readily inaccessible to future Masters and thus was referred to as a "lost library."[1]
Meeting Doctor Strange[]
- "You have to be the strangest-dressed sorcerer I've ever seen."
- ―O'Bengh to Doctor Strange[src]
O'Bengh met Stephen Strange in a forest, after he used the Time Stone to escape from the Ancient One. He asked O'Bengh the location for the Lost Library of Cagliostro, but O'Bengh ignored Strange and left him. Strange followed him and was led to the entrance for the library.
Realizing an opening to enter, Strange used his Sling Ring to conjure a portal but was greeted by a number of runes, leading him to fall into a hole, where he once again met O'Bengh. He commented on Strange's outfit, saying that he was the most strangest-dressed sorcerer that he had met. Strange asked O'Bengh where he could find Cagliostro, but O'Bengh replied with a cryptic response, not revealing his true identity. O'Bengh later introduced himself to Strange, telling him that he was the librarian for the books of Cagliostro. Strange was later guided by him to the true entrance of the library, and was asked about how long he would stay in the library. Strange replied, saying that he would stay for as long as he needed.[1]
Caring for Strange[]
- "There is a fine line between devotion and delusion. Love can break more than your heart. It can shatter your mind."
- ―O'Bengh to Doctor Strange[src]
Finding Doctor Strange after his first encounter with a tentacled mystic being, Cagliostro tended to his wounds and cared for him. He asked Strange if what he was doing was all worth it, and warned him of crossing the line between devotion and delusion. He also warned him of the effects of love, and what it could do to ones mind.[1]
Revealing the Truth[]
- "You are only half a man living half a life."
- ―O'Bengh to Strange Supreme[src]
On the verge of death, Cagliostro was visited by Strange Supreme, having absorbed the energy of multiple mystical beings. Strange promptly tried to use the Eye of Agamotto to prevent Cagliostro's death, but Cagliostro refused, telling Strange that death was part of the plan, and revealed to him that he was not the only Strange in his universe.[1]
Personality[]
Cagliostro was a very wise man. Life taught him much, including how to use his time to his fullest. He was a humble man who lived in the Lost Library of Cagliostro, and when he was visited by Doctor Strange, he tried to warn him of what he was doing, but ultimately left the choice up to him. Even though Cagliostro did not agree with Strange's choices, he cared for him, all the same, and when he died, he did so peacefully, passing on one last piece of advice to his friend.
