- "It's gonna be hard when you get there. If you're gonna work within S.H.I.E.L.D. for HYDRA, you can't ever get attached to anyone or anything. You have to fight that weakness in you."
"Good. Now take care of Buddy and we'll get out of here. That's not a weakness, is it?"
- ―John Garrett and Grant Ward
Buddy was the only companion of a teenaged Grant Ward when he was taken from a prison in Massachusetts to the wilderness of Wyoming by John Garrett to learn self-reliance. Six months later, Ward and Buddy had become close. Whenever Ward shot a deer, Buddy would fetch it for him.
Garrett, in order to teach Ward emotional detachment to become a HYDRA sleeper within S.H.I.E.L.D., ordered him to kill the dog before they could go to S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy. However, Ward was unable to kill Buddy while looking at him, and thus fired a shot in the sky, knowing Buddy would run. As Buddy ran, Ward used a sniper rifle to kill him.
Bobbi Morse attempted to reason with Agent 33 not to kill her; in the discussion, Morse tried to show how Ward was shaping Palamas just as John Garrett had shaped Ward. The final fate of Buddy was discussed in the comparison.
