Bud Schultz started a relationship with Wilma Cully and soon the woman and her young daughter, Agnes Cully, moved in. Agnes was a very smart girl and one day, Schultz walked in and teased her. After she didn't give a clear answer, he told Wilma that she's a weird child.

Later, when Agnes was a teenager, Schultz and Wilma had an argument that ended with Schultz walking out. Wilma then angrily asked why Agnes couldn't be nicer to him. She responded saying that she didn't like him. Wilma then took her by her arm to a mirror and showed her that she wouldn't get anywhere using her brains. She had to focus on being pretty if she wanted to get anywhere in the world.[1]
