In 2010, Tony Stark was assassinated during Nick Fury's attempt to recruit the billionaire to the Avengers Initiative. Natasha Romanoff was the prime suspect for the murder, and was promptly arrested. Rumlow and the rest of STRIKE were tasked with transporting Romanoff to Alexander Pierce for questioning.
Rumlow fails the mission
Rumlow sat in the front of the transport truck, with Romanoff locked in the back under armed watch. Rumlow expressed doubt over Romanoff's skills, questioning what Fury saw in her. However, he was suddenly alerted to a disturbance within the truck. Rumlow had the truck pull over, and ran round to the back, swinging the doors open, only to find that Romanoff was gone, and the STRIKE agents were all knocked out. Rumlow then yelled out in frustration at being bested.[2]
