History[]
Used by the Guardians[]
Kidnapping of Kevin Bacon[]
- "Drax, why are they staring? You put the cloaking device on like you said you did, right?"
- ―Mantis to Drax the Destroyer[src]
By 2025, the Guardians of the Galaxy purchased the Bowie as it was significantly larger than the Benatar, and began using it as their primary ship.[1]
In December of that year, Drax the Destroyer and Mantis used the Bowie to fly from Knowhere to Earth in order to find Kevin Bacon and take him to Knowhere as a Christmas present for Peter Quill. As they arrived at Earth, Drax forgot to turn on the cloaking device, prompting people to get scared. Mantis landed the Bowie behind the Hollywood Sign, and the two went looking for Bacon. They found him and went to Christmas Castle, where they got several Christmas decorations and loaded them into the Bowie, along with a brainwashed Bacon.
While returning to Knowhere in the Bowie, Drax and Mantis asked them questions about his supposed exploits, prompting them to get disgusted when they realized he was an actor and not the hero that Quill claimed he was. Mantis got Bacon to pretend to be a hero to avoid disappointing Quill.
When Bacon was released from the trance, he panicked, prompting Quill to have Kraglin Obfonteri bring Bacon back to Earth on the Bowie. While getting ready, Obfonteri explained that Bacon taught Quill how to be a hero. Bacon then got a phone call from Kyra Sedgwick, asking where he was. Obfonteri's story touched Bacon, who simply told his wife that he was with friends who needed to learn about Christmas, asking if it was alright for him to return late. Bacon hung up and agreed to stay on Knowhere for some time. He was then returned to Earth on the Bowie.[2]
Infiltration into the Orgoscope[]
A few months later, in 2026, the Guardians were attacked by Adam Warlock, as he attempted to take Rocket back to High Evolutionary, however he was able to critically wound Rocket in the process before being taken down. In a rush the Guardians took Rocket to the Bowie's med-bay and learned that Rocket had a kill switch implanted in his heart and needed to acquire the information to deactivate the kill switch to use a med pack to save Rocket from OrgoCorp, and in a rush the Guardians proceeded to take the Bowie and blast off to the Orgoscope.
After arrival, Star-Lord, Mantis and Drax went to set up the ships defenses as Nebula used each set up to crash through each shield to the Orgoscope. Immediately after they broke through, the Bowie was hijacked and boarded briefly by the United Ravagers as Nebula had contacted them through Gamora to help them get the items required to blend in. As the Ravagers had left Gamora and the Guardians to handle the mission, Meanwhile, Groot looked after Rocket on the Bowie on standby to wait for the rest to return. Unfortunately, the Guardians accidently threw their suits into a decontamination chamber after entering before getting caught in a fight with the Orgosentries as they continued their heist, requiring Nebula to call in Groot to pilot the Bowie to fetch them, with Groot dragging the Bowie into the Orgoscope in an attempt to look cool, with the Guardians blasting away as fast as they could to escape the Orgosentries.[3]
Battle of Counter-Earth[]
After retrieving the device that contained the info to deactivate the kill switch from the Orgoscope, the Guardians tried to look at what was on it on the Bowie. Unfortunately, besides the horrifying process of making Rocket into what he is now, the necessary info was extracted by one of High Evolutionary's recorders, Theel. Despite Gamora's insistence that they were heading for a trap and to send her back to the Ravagers if they insisted, the Guardians instead planned on tracking Theel to Counter-Earth immediately to forcefully take out the data to Counter-Earth. Meanwhile, Gamora who was angered of the Guardians refusal to take her back to help Rocket decided to contact Fitz-Gibbonok to retrieve her when the ship landed, which was picked up by Ayesha and Adam Warlock after they accidentally killed him, allowing them to track the ship.
The Bowie eventually arrived on Counter-Earth, where it landed safely in a suburban area of the planet. The Guardians left Gamora and Rocket on the Bowie as they attempted to ask the Humanimals and later Neelie where they could find High Evolutionary. Meanwhile, Gamora watched over the recovering Rocket before looking around Quill's Zune and bag to understand him better. After they learned that High Evolutionary was at Arête Laboratories, Quill, Groot, and Nebula left Mantis and Drax outside of the Bowie for lookout while they confronted him, but they also left upon Drax getting bored and wanting to help after.
While Gamora was in the bathroom, she was suddenly alerted to an intruder and found War Pig had been sent by High Evolutionary to fetch Rocket in the ship after learning of the Guardians' arrival, thinking it was unguarded. Gamora tried to protect Rocket, but was knocked out by War Pig, however Adam Warlock with Blurp barged into the fight and killed War Pig to claim Rocket's recapture for the Sovereign. However, before Adam could grab Rocket, Gamora grabbed the unconscious Raccoon and jumped out of the Bowie to hide from Adam. However, as they ran underneath the ship the Suburbs of Counter-Earth were blown up after High Evolutionary decided to clean his slate for his perfect society, by killing all Humanimals with Counter-Earth. This caused Gamora to run both of them back into the Bowie, as Adam tried to save his mother, Ayesha, forgetting Rocket and attempted to save Ayesha but failed after her ship was blown up with her inside, killing her and flinging Adam away. Meanwhile, after arriving back inside the Bowie a giant explosion rocked the ship causing Gamora, the comatose Rocket, and Blurp to be disoriented. However, Gamora recovered to prepare to fight Adam, after he used his remaining power to return before passing out from his exhaustion allowing Gamora to bound him to another table.
Eventually, Gamora received Quill's call for the Bowie to be taken to his and Groot's location, leaving Gamora who had no experience piloting the ship to chaotically fly her, Rocket, Adam and Blurp to their location almost accidentally crushing them after they retrieve the info from Theel's head, had it not been for Quill guiding her to pull up as hard as she could. The group left the planet's destruction through The Bowie and due to their worry for Rocket, Quill and Groot presumed that Mantis, Drax, and Nebula somehow left the planet safely.
After making their way out of Counter-Earth, Peter and Groot begun to use the info to try to deactivate Rocket's kill switch in the Bowie. Unfortunately, Rocket's injuries took their toll and caused him to flatline causing Quill to desperately try to revive Rocket through CPR to get his heart moving again. Fortunately, Quill's attempt was successful, and upon the kill-switch finally being deactivated, and using the Med Pack, Rocket was revived to Quill and Groot's joy. After celebrating Rocket's safety, Rocket mentioned that the communicators were alerting them that Nebula was contacting them, which Quill answered with them learning that Nebula, Mantis and Drax had infiltrated Arête Laboratories as it left. Unfortunately, they listened as the group was discovered and captured by High Evolutionary who offered to return them alive if they handed Rocket back to him, which Quill only mocked him before being hung up on and deciding to take the Bowie to ambush the lab to free their friends and keep Rocket.[3]
Attack on Arête Laboratories[]
Eventually, the Guardians piloted the Bowie to where Arête Laboratories was currently flying to a colony that High Evolutionary had prepared for his society. Before heading off, Quill called Kraglin and Cosmo to bring pilot the now mobile Knowhere to them, knowing that their plan would leave the ship useless. After stopping outside of the Lab, Peter, Gamora, Rocket, Groot prepared to splinter off the Bowie to infiltrate the lab, with Rocket and Groot flying two smaller spaceships from the sides, as Peter, Gamora and Blurp piloted the cockpit area leaving the rest of the Bowie adrift in space. Meanwhile, in the adrift body of the ship, Blurp woke up Adam Warlock, and in his anger busted out of his restraints.
On their way to the hangar, High Evolutionary unleashed the Hell Spawn to attack them and Knowhere, with the monsters damaging Groot's and Rocket's pods to crash into the hangar in a vain attempt to kill them. Meanwhile, Star-Lord and Gamora were ambushed by Adam Warlock with Blurp in a last-ditch effort to take them down, damaging the ship in the process. To standoff against Adam, Gamora threatened to kill Blurp if he got closer causing him to stop long enough for Quill to finish the failing pod to the hangar and activating self-destruct before shoving Gamora and Blurp out to leave Adam to be incapacitated by the ship's destruction. Eventually, the Guardians continued their assault, freeing Drax, Nebula and Mantis who went onto kill the rest of the Hell Spawn, free the Star Children society along with the animals High Evolutionary planned to experiment on along, before taking down High Evolutionary himself before the ship was destroyed, with Adam deciding to redeem himself by rescuing Quill when he almost died in space. Meanwhile, the vital pods to pilot the Bowie, were also blown up with the Lab, leaving the rest of the ship useless.[3]
Design and Capabilities[]
The Bowie's design bears similarity to a giant circular saw. There are seven areas on the ship but it's possible there are more including the central corridor, the central core, medical bay, pilot bay, changeroom, and bathroom.
The ship is also able to separate three pods with two from the sides and the Cockpit from the main ship allowing the smaller ships to invade other ships. As the pilot bay was a separate pod, even when attached to the Bowie the pod can spin independently from it. The Bowie was also able to be cloaked to look invisible to those outside of it.
Trivia[]
- The Bowie is named after David Bowie.
- In the comics, the Bowie was a ship that Groot won for the Guardians of the Galaxy to replace their destroyed ship, the Ryder. However, the ship was destroyed by Zeus in a failed attempt to kill the team on the ship.
