- "The Nine Realms are not eternal. They had a dawn as they will have a dusk. But before that dawn, the dark forces, the Dark Elves, reigned absolute and unchallenged."
- ―Book of Yggdrasil[src]
The Book of Yggdrasil was an ancient grimoire written by the Asgardians, detailing much of the history of the Nine Realms. Many of the events described in the book were used as children's stories by Asgardian parents.
History[]
The Book of Yggdrasil[1] was one of the oldest texts in Asgard, detailing ancient knowledge that predated even Odin. Through some form of Asgardian enchantment, the illustrations in the book seemed to move on their own accord.
It was also used as a storybook that Frigga read to Thor and Loki when they were children, containing both stories of past heroic feats and about the history of the Dark Elves.[2][3]
A version of the book that lacked the enchanted illustrations was stored within a church in Tønsberg, Norway. This version of the book included a history of Odin and his family as well as information regarding the Nine Realms. During World War II, Hydra acquired this version of the book, from which their leader, Johann Schmidt, learned of the Tesseract and its capabilities.[4][3]
During the time of the Convergence, Odin used the book to explain the nature of the Aether and the history of the Dark Elves to Thor and Jane Foster. When Foster, who was hosting the Aether, asked if the book said anything about removing the Aether from her, Odin regrettably replied that it did not.[2]
