In 2011, the rights to the character Blade were reverted back to Marvel.[2]
Following the series order of The Punisher in April 2016, it was reported that Netflix was developing three other vigilante series about Blade, Ghost Rider and Moon Knight.[3]
On June 26, 2017, Kevin Feige (along with the film division of Marvel) had expressed interest in using Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe stating "We think it would be cool, Someday". Similarly, Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts has stated that he not only wants to use Morbius the Living Vampire but also Eric Brooks/Blade in a future sequel.
On July 20, 2019, at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Kevin Feige announced that a film about Blade was in development and that Mahershala Ali will play the title character.[1]
On August 2, 2019, when interviewed by Screen Rant about Hobbs & Shaw, David Leitch expressed interest in directing the film.[4]
