Agent Natalia Alianovna "Natasha" Romanoff (Russian: Наталья Альяновна "Наташа" Романов), also known as Black Widow, was a special agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and one of the candidates for the Avengers Initiative. Once she was framed for the murder of Tony Stark, Romanoff escaped S.H.I.E.L.D. and went on her own mission to pursue the man responsible for the killing. The murderer, Hank Pym, managed to kill Romanoff, as he did to all other Avengers candidates, but not before she disclosed the truth to Nick Fury.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent[]
A Russian assassin, Romanoff was later recruited by Nick Fury to join S.H.I.E.L.D. and she became one of the most skilled agents for the organization. During this time, Romanoff also became good friends with her colleague Clint Barton and developed a close bond with him.[2]
Avengers Initiative[]
Confrontation with Stark[]
- "That’s Lithium Dioxide. It’s gonna take the edge off."
"It’s not a cure, it just... abates the symptoms?"
"Stark! You okay?" - ―Nick Fury and Black Widow[src]
Romanoff drove with Nick Fury, as he was giving his motivational speech of the Avengers Initiative, which annoyed her as she heard the speech before. While she liked the idea, she expressed doubts of Tony Stark joining. It was by this time they pulled up to Randy's Donuts, where Stark was recovering from his hangover. Fury reminded Romanoff that her was able to convince her to join S.H.I.E.L.D, and Stark could have potential as an Avenger.
As Fury was speaking to Stark, Romanoff injected Stark with a syringe, which was suppose to contain Lithium Dioxide, to subside the effects of his Palladium poisoning. However, immediately after getting injected, Stark collapsed on the group, to the shock of Romanoff and Fury, and upon checking him, discovered he was dead.[2]
Accused of Murder[]
- "You know these won’t hold me."
"Oh, I’m counting on it. Someone inside S.H.I.E.L.D. compromised Stark’s antidote. I need someone on the outside to find out who."
"Sure you wanna take another big swing on me, boss?"
"Safest bet I’ll ever make." - ―Black Widow and Nick Fury[src]
Romanoff was immediately taken into custody and was to be taken to Alexander Pierce for questioning, while still claiming her innocence. Nick Fury gave her the syringe she used, before she was placed into the transport vehicle. Surrounded by STRIKE agents, she appeared to be trying to breaking the tension, but quickly escaped her handcuffs and knocked out all the operatives in the back of the truck before escaping.
Romanoff went to Culver University, and made contact with Betty Ross. Ross first thought she was there to locate or discuss Bruce Banner, but Romanoff told her she was framed for Tony Stark's murder and needed her help to examine the syringe that was used, since Ross was an expert in tactical applications of cellular biology, and Romanoff needed to stay off S.H.I.E.L.D.'s radar, which was a skill Ross was good at.
They went to the lab, and Ross examined the syringe, finding no traces of any lethal substances. However, she did find a capsule was released from the syringe, leading Romanoff to believe that culprit might involve nanotech. While Ross was trying to force her to leave, Romanoff noticed a discarded uniform for Stanley's Pizza Parlor, which Ross said may have belonged to a student. Shortly after, she was called by Fury, who informed her friend Clint Barton was killed, and his death was linked with Stark's death.
The common connection was believed to involve the assassination of potential Avengers candidates, which left only Banner and Romanoff left on the list. Romanoff noticed Ross looking towards a closet and as she approached it, Ross stood in the way. The S.H.I.E.L.D agent threatened her, but Banner opened the door to prevent any violence.[2]
Battle at Culver University[]
- "There’s nothing you can do."
"That’s my father. He’ll listen to me."
"The General isn’t the one who started this." - ―Black Widow and Betty Ross[src]
Romanoff took Bruce Banner with her, to protect him, and tried calling Nick Fury for support. As they entered the Culver University walkway, General Thaddeus Ross arrived with a full military force to capture Banner. Romanoff finally got through to Fury, who told her he was occupied with his own problems, space Vikings, so he could not help. Romanoff identified herself as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and tried to reason with them to back down, but someone else shot through the glass, striking Banner in the shoulder.
Romanoff tried to reassure him, but he already began changing into the Hulk and advised her to flee. She jumped out the window as the Hulk began attacking Ross's forces. Romanoff saw Betty Ross run to her father to try and talk to him, but Romanoff grabbed the scientist, pushing her to safety, telling her that the General was not the one responsible. Suddenly, the Hulk began to swell up, larger and larger, until he blew up.[2]
Death[]
At night, in the Manassas Public Library, Romanoff contacted Phil Coulson, asking for his password to access S.H.I.E.L.D files. Once she had access, she figured out the Avengers Initiative files were accessed by someone using Hope Van Dyne's log in, which she found suspicious, since she died two years prior. Romanoff was being observed by Hank Pym, and as she began to call Nick Fury, she heard him watching her.
Romanoff said he would not be able to defeat S.H.I.E.L.D or her, but she was immediately attacked by him as he was small. Being of small size at night, Romanoff could not see him to land a hit or fend off his attacks. Finally, she tried to reach for her phone as it connected to Fury's voice message, screaming "Hope. It's all about Hope." before being dragged off into the shadows, and was killed by Pym.[2]
Legacy[]
- "Where are we?"
"On a world that lost their Widow."
"It’s a mess." - ―Black Widow and The Watcher[src]
Romanoff's last message to Nick Fury helped him figure out who the assassin was and knowing he would be targeted next, he made preparations to defeat Hank Pym. To do so, Fury requested Loki to pose as him and face Pym at a graveyard, resulting in Pym's defeat and banishment to Asgard's dungeons, avenging Romanoff's death. Phil Coulson later lamented how Romanoff and her intended teammates never raised, but Fury insisted they still had work to do.[2]
Following the Battle for the Multiverse, the Watcher decided to displace an alternate Black Widow from a universe destroyed by Ultron into the universe where most of the Avengers Initiative candidates were killed, noting to her how that universe lost "their Widow". As this Black Widow rescued Fury from Loki, Fury concluded that his rescuer wasn't the Natasha Romanoff he knew, but nonetheless felt she was still the same in spirit.[4]
