On February 14, 2018, Kevin Feige announced that he wanted Ryan Coogler to return to write and direct a sequel to Black Panther.[3]

On March 9, 2018, Kevin Feige revealed that there were plans to make a sequel to Black Panther.[4]

On October 11, 2018, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Ryan Coogler had signed on to return to write and direct the film, with filming expected to begin in late 2019 or early 2020.[1]

On January 28, 2019, Angela Bassett's husband Courtney B. Vance stated that the main cast of the first film would return for the sequel, including Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, with Bassett stating "[We didn't technically see him] go into the ocean, no."[5]
