- "The Frost Giants tried to conquer your Earth a millennia ago, but Asgard drove them away."
- ―Sif to Phil Coulson[src]
The Battle of Tønsberg was a fierce and pivotal battle during the Asgard-Jotunheim War that occurred on Earth, in what is present day Tønsberg, Norway, between the Frost Giants led by King Laufey who desired to bring about a new ice age on Earth and the forces of Asgard led by King Odin with the help of the Eternals.
The battle marked a major turning point in the war which would help lead to the Frost Giants' ultimate defeat.
Background[]
- "From around the cold and darkness came the Frost Giants, threatening to plunge the mortal world into a new ice age. But humanity would not face this threat alone."
- ―Odin[src]
Taking place in 965 A.D., Laufey, the king of the Frost Giants, violated a peace agreement with Odin and attempted to conquer the Nine Realms, beginning the Asgard-Jotunheim War.[1]
Battle[]
- "Our armies drove the Frost Giants back into the heart of their own world. The cost was great."
- ―Odin[src]
The war eventually reached Earth, where the Frost Giants invaded the small Viking village in what is now Tønsberg, Norway. Using the Casket of Ancient Winters, King Laufey murdered hundreds of human villagers, until the Asgardians assembled an army of their best warriors. Led by Odin and aided by the Eternals, the Asgardians fought and drove the Frost Giants from Earth.[1][2]
Aftermath[]
The Asgard-Jotunheim War raged for months until the Frost Giants were driven back to Jotunheim. The Asgardians invaded Jotunheim and Laufey surrendered.[1] As a reward for the Eternals' help, Odin gave Gilgamesh a secret Asgardian brew recipe.[2]
