The Battle of New York was an attempted attack on Earth by the Chitauri.
Background
Loki made a deal with Thanos in which the latter would supply Loki with an army of Chitauri and the Scepter, enabling him to rule Earth, while Loki would bring Thanos back the Scepter along with the Tesseract once the job was done.[1]
Battle
Loki launched his attack, herding the Chitarui to New York City via a wormhole. The army attacked, devastating the city; however, the Avengers fought back. A nuclear missile was sent to the city, and the Avenger Iron Man grabbed it and redirected it into the wormhole, where it crashed into and destroyed the Chitauri Command Center, deactivating every Chitauri. Iron Man began to fall back towards New York City, but the wormhole closed before he could pass through, leaving him in space.[1]
Aftermath
Pepper Potts, Iron Man's girlfriend, became the acting CEO of Stark Industries due to Stark's assumed death. Potts was devastated by the news.
Meanwhile, Stark crash-landed on the planet Sakaar, where he was taken to meet the Grandmaster, who took an instant liking to him. Stark attended a Grand Prix, in which racers such as Valkyrie and Korg competed. During the race, Korg was attacked by Snuffy, leading Stark to fly onto the track to attempt to save him. However, Gamora emerged and attacked Stark, as she was sent by her father Thanos as retaliation for Stark stopping the Chitauri Invasion.
