The Battle for the Cup of Glory was an attempt by Haldier the Blacksmith to steal the Cup of Glory from Thor, Loki, Sif, the Warriors Three, Brunok, Siegrold, and Hilda.

Background[]

Many years ago, the Three Fates presented a Norseman with three strings. These strings represented glory, envy, and rage. The strings were then spun into gold and made into the Cup of Glory. Trying to change his destiny, the man hoped it would grant whoever held the cup with glory, but instead gave them envy and rage.

In 1521, Haldier discovered the cup and hid it in an Asgardian mine, planning to take it into the city when it was safe to do so. However, Loki overheard this plan and wanted the cup for himself, so he challenged Haldier's son, Brunok, to a Virtue Challenge. Loki, Thor, and Lady Sif teamed up against Brunok, Siegrold, and Hilda in the challenge, and were later joined by the Warriors Three, who had joined for fun.

After all three teams met up in the mine, Loki discovered the Cup of Glory and took it, as the rest of the competitors saw it. This caused them all to fight over it, until Thor inadvertently trapped all of them in the mine. They eventually made their way out and ended the challenge, planning on returning the cup to Asgard, where Odin would decide what to do with it.[1]

Battle[]

They were stopped along the way by Haldier, who had grown concerned since the Virtue Challenge was lasting longer than it should have. Brunok told Haldier about the group's possession of the Cup of Glory, causing him to go crazy and steal the cup. He threw Thor of a cliff, only for him to grab a tree branch. The others fought him, trying not to do too much damage due to his enchanted nature.

They tried to restrain Haldier, only to fail. Meanwhile, Thor managed to get back to the top of the cliff. Loki tried to take the cup for himself, but Haldier took it as Thor reached the top. He and Haldier dueled, and Thor used lightning to knock the cup out of Haldier's hand. Understanding the cup's thrall over Haldier, Thor extended forgiveness to Haldier.[1]

Aftermath[]

When the Cup of Glory was returned to Asgard, Odin broke it into many pieces and sent it into the stars, so that it could never be reunited again. It also served as a warning not to be tempted by desire. Loki was forgiven for his trickery in planning the Virtue Challenge.[1]
