"Listen! Whatever your assignment was 826, you're now on evac duty."
A.I.M. Soldier[src]

The Battle at the Project P.R.O.T.E.A.N. Facility was an uprising of A.I.M. Drones which resulted from Kearson DeWitt merging himself into Ultimo.

Background[]

Kearson DeWitt organized for the theft of a significant portion of J.A.R.V.I.S.' original code by Roxxon Energy Corporation. Tony Stark and James Rhodes searched for Valentin Shatalov, who they believed to be responsible. They tracked Shatalov and killed him, only to learn that Shatalov was partnered with A.I.M. Stark and Rhodes learned that A.I.M.'s project was being led by DeWitt, who was attempting to run Project P.R.O.T.E.A.N., which would allow for upgraded weapons that regenerate themselves. Meanwhile, DeWitt tested P.R.O.T.E.A.N. on himself, leading him to become Ultimo.[1]

Battle[]

"They're going for the transports-- --we're going to get trapped in here."
A.I.M. Soldier[src]

A.I.M. Drones started to attack the company's soldiers that were present, and the soldiers attempted to evacuate. Meanwhile, Tony Stark, James Rhodes, and Black Widow arrived on a stolen A.I.M. gunship. They received clearance to land and orders to open fire, which Romanoff used to attack both the drones and A.I.M. soldiers. Stark and Rhodes fought, and Rhodes held off the drones where they were while Stark left to find DeWitt. He interfaced with a computer at the base and learned that A.I.M. had lost control of the drones, realizing that Project P.R.O.T.E.A.N. was responsible. Stark disabled security, activating defense protocols which Stark fought through as he went toward the reactor room.

Stark's armor started to get infected by P.R.O.T.E.A.N., so Stark ordered J.A.R.V.I.S. to shut down infected systems. He contacted Nick Fury and asked for an air strike, convincing Fury to agree. Stark destroyed the generators and created an opening for the air strike, allowing the Helicarrier to strike the base and destroy the systems. Stark was temporarily knocked out, but recovered and explained that he was free from P.R.O.T.E.A.N., although J.A.R.V.I.S. was still disabled. Stark insisted he could finish the mission and restarted J.A.R.V.I.S., who recommended a full diagnostic. Stark encountered a P.R.O.T.E.A.N. Hybrid and fled. He tried to blast it, but the hybrid healed itself, which J.A.R.V.I.S. reported appeared to be DeWitt's doing. Following J.A.R.V.I.S.' advice, Stark activated the shock point assembly with the hybrid in the room, destroying the hybrid.[1]

Aftermath[]

The Sweep Team was sent by S.H.I.E.L.D. to search for Kearson DeWitt while Tony Stark asked J.A.R.V.I.S. to update his weapons to include shock point energy in the event that they encounter any other P.R.O.T.E.A.N. Hybrids. The Sweep Team was unable to find DeWitt, so they prepared to continue searching. However, Stark's armor suddenly shut down and Ultimo started talking through J.A.R.V.I.S.' systems, threatening to kill everyone Stark cared about. Ultimo organized an attack on the Helicarrier which was defeated. Stark and James Rhodes went looking for him and destroyed Project Greengrid. They then set a trap for Ultimo and defeated him.[1]
