"Come on. I never totally fit in with the gang, anyway."
The subject of this article is part of an MCU franchise story that has been officially deemed to be non-canonical to the primary continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Its events instead occur in another reality within the Multiverse. This universe is designated by the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki as the "Ultimo Transformation Universe".

"If you can take out those big arc reactors, I think we'll have a shot at this."
Tony Stark to James Rhodes[src]

The Battle at Stark Archives was a successful trap set by Tony Stark and James Rhodes to shut down Ultimo.

Background[]

"I screwed up, okay? I made mistakes. Sick men --like DeWitt-- took my mistake and... warped you into something... something monstrous. But you... You grew. You learned. You amazed us all. Don't make me have to kill you. You're my responsibility."
"Yes. You... are responsible. And you must... pay."
Tony Stark and Ultimo[src]

Kearson DeWitt worked for Stark Industries and learned about several projects from the company, such as Project Greengrid. He worked directly on Project P.R.O.T.E.A.N., but was fired from the company. He started working with A.I.M. and revived the projects. He organized for the Dataspine, a significant portion of J.A.R.V.I.S.' code, to be stolen. Tony Stark and James Rhodes went on a search for DeWitt, but were too late to prevent him from merging himself with the Dataspine and P.R.O.T.E.A.N. technology to create Ultimo.

Ultimo began infecting technology with P.R.O.T.E.A.N. technology, leading to a large Battle at the Project P.R.O.T.E.A.N. Facility, which Stark ended. However, Ultimo then infected J.A.R.V.I.S. briefly and threatened to kill the people Stark cared about. Ultimo organized an attack on the Helicarrier using an A.I.M. Arc Armiger which had been upgraded with P.R.O.T.E.A.N. technology, but Rhodes managed to defeat the Armiger. Rhodes and Stark then destroyed Ultimo's next attempt to spread P.R.O.T.E.A.N. technology using Project Greengrid. Stark realized that Ultimo would be targeting him, so he and Rhodes set a trap for Ultimo by activating the reactors at Stark Archives and forming a plan, along with Nick Fury.[1]

Attack[]

"Short-sighted as ever. This ends now."
"Hey! We agree on something!"
Ultimo and Tony Stark[src]

Tony Stark attempted to reason with Ultimo and get him to stop, but Ultimo restated his desire to kill Stark and attacked. Stark had Nick Fury launch an onslaught of missiles from the Helicarrier and Stark flew among them. The missiles crashed into Ultimo, distracting him and allowing Stark to enter Ultimo's large body. Stark expressed confidence that they could succeed if Rhodes destroyed Ultimo's Arc Reactors and turned off his communicator, hoping to understand Ultimo's mechanisms. Rhodes then attacked Ultimo's Arc Reactors. He removed two successfully, and Stark contacted Rhodes to explain that it was working as DeWitt's body was lowered.

However, this led Ultimo to attack Stark with DeWitt's body inside. As Stark fought DeWitt, he told Rhodes that he should be able to prevent Ultimo's attacks as he powers them up by attacking the sub-Arc Reactors which appear when he attacks. Stark also asked Rhodes to blow up more main Arc Reactors. Fury then said that he had Project Greengrid technology to launch on Ultimo, but Stark realized that Ultimo had infected it and tried to stop. However it was too late as they fired at Rhodes, infecting his weapons systems. They resolved to continue working to shut Ultimo down. Rhodes removed the rest of the Arc Reactors. Stark asked Rhodes and Fury to cause significant damage all at once so that he could not repair, so Fury sent a fleet of S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicopters and told Stark to make it count.

They were successful at making Ultimo vulnerable, allowing Stark to continue to attack and ultimately defeat Stark. DeWitt's exoskeleton attempt to leave DeWitt, threatening to kill him. Stark tried to save him, but J.A.R.V.I.S. explained that the integration with Project P.R.O.T.E.A.N. technology was irreversible. Ultimo grabbed Stark, who blasted the exoskeleton. Rhodes tried to help a helicopter stay in the air and Fury told Stark they were dying as Stark's life support fell to six percent. Fury, Rhodes, and Pepper Potts all tried to talk him out of his plan, but Stark refused. Stark asked Rhodes to shoot Ultimo in the head, which Rhodes ultimately did. Stark amanged to escape, allowing Fury to pilot the Helicarrier directly into Ultimo's body, destroying it. J.A.R.V.I.S. asked Stark to promise never to let anyone gain access to his programming again.[1]

Aftermath[]

Tony Stark admitted to not knowing how to save the world, but said he was good at guessing in a promotional video he made for Stark Industries.[1]
