The Battle at Culver University was an attempt by the United States Army to arrest Bruce Banner while he tried to retrieve the data from the Project Gamma Pulse.

Background[]

Bruce Banner and Betty Ross were hired by the United States Army for their Project Gamma Pulse, which was intended to enhance soldiers' physical capabilities. However, the experiment went wrong as Banner experimented on himself and created the monster known as the Hulk. The military deleted the data from Culver University's databases and started hunting Banner under the belief that his body was Army property.

Banner spent years on the run and was eventually found in Porto Verde. Emil Blonsky was sent to bring Banner in, but Blonsky blew up the building which Banner was in, triggering his transformation into the Hulk. Hulk fought through the soldiers, including Blonsky, and fled to New York City while Thaddeus Ross told Blonsky that Hulk and Banner were the same person. Ross had Blonsky injected with the same serum Banner was to create the Hulk.

Meanwhile, Hulk arrived in New York City and met with Samuel Sterns at Empire State University. Sterns started analyzing Banner's blood and developing a cure while the army hunted him down. Sterns eventually discovered that Banner's gamma radiation levels fluctuated too greatly for a cure to work without an extreme elevation, which Banner hesitantly agreed. Banner recovered the three pieces of technology which Sterns needed for the cure, but Sterns was still concerned that the slightest miscalculation could kill Banner. Sterns asked for the data from the original experiment which created the Hulk, so Banner suggested that he could find it at Culver University.[1]

Battle[]

Bruce Banner went to Culver University and met with Betty Ross, who happily reunited with him. Ross prepared to show Banner the clone of the experiment's data which she had made, but Banner noticed Emil Blonsky watching him and ran. However, Banner found himself surrounded, even as Ross tried to get through to her father, General Thaddeus Ross. Thaddeus ordered his soldiers to restrain Betty, which angered Banner, prompting him to transform into the Hulk. Hulk went around the campus and destroyed all of the army deployment points which had been set up. Hulk went to check on Betty, but Blonsky then attacked him. Hulk managed to defeat Blonsky despite his enhancements, so the Army fired at him with helicopters which Hulk destroyed. One of the helicopters nearly crashed into Betty, but Hulk saved her and fled.[1]

Aftermath[]

Thaddeus Ross watched as Hulk fled with his daughter. Ross was then called over to where Emil Blonsky was sitting, alive. Ross ordered medical treatment for Blonsky. Hulk and Betty Ross remained in touch, and Betty contacted Banner soon after, asking him to protect Thaddeus during his attack on the Enclave.

Blonsky fully recovered from his injuries, prompting him and Ross to believe the serum to have fully worked. Ross therefore ordered the full treatment for Blonsky. The treatment started to take a toll on Blonsky mentally, who went against orders and broke into Empire State University. He held Samuel Sterns at gunpoint, forcing the scientist to turn him into the same thing Banner was able to become. The experiment turned Blonsky into a monstrous Abomination who started rampaging in the streets. Hulk fought Abomination and ultimately defeated him before fleeing.[1]
