The Barren Wasteland is an alternate reality devoid of sentient life, and chosen for that by Watcher as the place where the Guardians of the Multiverse would confront Ultron.

Zombies are dumped into the Barren Wasteland
The Guardians of the Multiverse chose the Barren Wasteland as a place to fight Ultron. The Guardians bonded, but Thor summoned lightning, bringing Ultron to them. A Battle for the Multiverse ensued as Gamora and Erik Killmonger left for Ultron's universe, in which Ultron buried the remaining Guardians. However, the Guardians emerged and resumed attacking Ultron. Peggy Carter and T'Challa managed to steal the Soul Stone from Ultron and went to Ultron's universe. Strange opened a portal above Ultron into a zombie-infested universe and dropped the zombies on top of Ultron before leaving the universe himself. Ultron fought the zombies and destroyed all of them before also leaving the universe.[1]
