The Aztec Empire, or the Triple Alliance (Classical Nahuatl: Ēxcān Tlahtōlōyān) was an alliance of three different city states located in what is now Mexico. It became an alliance in 1428 and ended in 1521 after being invaded by the Spanish.

The Spanish attack the Aztecs

In 1521, the Spanish Empire, during its attempts to colonize the American continents, began to invade the Aztec Empire's capital; Tenochtitlan. The city had erupted into flames as both the Spanish and the Aztec armies raged in battle. At the same time, the Eternals were stationed in Tenochtitlan searching for the last of the remaining Deviants. While the city was being evacuated, Druig witnessed the villagers being killed by Spanish soldiers, he showed his disgust at this by attempting to take control over the minds of those fighting, however, Ajak advised against this.[1]

Thena stabs Ajak

As the battle continued to rage on, Thena lost control due to her Mahd Wy'ry, thus making her attack her fellow Eternals unprovoked. Thena attempted to attack Sersi, but was stopped by Makkari, Thena then managed to stab Phastos and Makkari. Next, Ajak faced off against Thena, attempting to snap her out of her affliction and using her healing abilities to recover from Thena's attacks. The battle was only ended when Gilgamesh managed to knock out Thena. The Eternals then relocated to a nearby temple to heal their wounds.

Druig watches the conflict unfold

Inside the temple, Ajak explained to Thena that she would have to report to Arishem the Judge to have her memories erased due to her Mahd Wy'ry. The Eternals were all torn about making a choice, while Druig once again, found himself watching the conflict between the Spanish and the Aztecs, He argued that the Eternals' mission to foster humanity's development was pointless if they were to just sit idle as they kill each other. Druig then looked at the two armies and took control of their minds', forcing them to ceasefire, Ikaris then confronted Druig, but Druig said that Ikaris would have to force him to stop. Due to this, Druig soon left the group, Gilgamesh agreed to be Thena's protector so she could keep her memories, and the remaining Eternals all went their separate ways.[1]

Colonization[]

After the Fall of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec Empire surrendered and departed from the battlefield, paving the way for future Spanish colonization of the Americas, thus spelling the end of the once-powerful civilization.[1]
