Avengers: Doomsday is an upcoming superhero film, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. The film is a sequel to The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the second season of Loki, The Marvels, Deadpool & Wolverine, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. It is the thirty-ninth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the third installment of Phase Six. The film is set to be released on December 18, 2026.[5]
A sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, will be released on December 17, 2027.

On July 22, 2022, it was revealed that Marvel Studios had filed five trademarks including one for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.[19] The next day, at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Kevin Feige officially announced that the film was in development. He also announced that the film would be released on May 2, 2025.[20] Three days later, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Destin Daniel Cretton would be directing the film.[21]
On September 14, 2022, Deadline reported that Jeff Loveness would be penning the film's script.[22]
On June 13, 2023, it was announced that the film had been pushed back from its initial release date to May 1, 2026.[23]
On November 2, 2023, it was revealed that Jonathan Schwartz would serve as an executive producer on the film.[3]
On November 15, 2023, Deadline reported that Destin Daniel Cretton had stepped down as the director of the film, choosing to focus on directing Shang-Chi 2.[24]
On November 27, 2023, Deadline reported that Michael Waldron would be writing the film's script, replacing Jeff Loveness.[25]
On December 18, 2023, Deadline reported that Jonathan Majors had been fired by Walt Disney Studios, and thereby removed from the film, after he was deemed guilty during an assault and harassment verdict earlier that day.[26] That same day, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Marvel Studios was currently referring to the film as Avengers 5 instead of The Kang Dynasty internally.[27]
On February 21, 2024, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the film would officially drop its subtitle The Kang Dynasty and that Kang the Conqueror's role in the film would either be minimized or excised entirely.[28] However, in April 2024, Disney released an update to its upcoming movie schedule which revealed that the film retained its The Kang Dynasty subtitle.[29]
On July 17, 2024, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, better known as the Russo Brothers, were in early talks to direct both the fifth and sixth Avengers films.[30]
On July 27, 2024, at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, it was revealed that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty had been canceled and that the fifth Avengers movie would instead be Avengers: Doomsday, dropping the Kang storyline in favor of Doctor Doom. The Russo Brothers were officially announced to be the directors of Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, with Robert Downey Jr. unveiled to be the actor that would portray Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom.[1] It was also announced that the Fantastic Four and the Thunderbolts would appear in the film.[7][9] That same day, it was revealed that the Russos would be co-producing the film through their company AGBO and that Stephen McFeely would be writing the film's script, replacing Michael Waldron.[2]
On July 29, 2024, it was reported that Alan Silvestri would be composing the score for the film.[4]
On October 21, 2024, in an interview with Collider, the Russo Brothers revealed that the film would begin production in Spring 2025.[31]
On December 9, 2024, The Wrap reported that Chris Evans had joined the cast of the film in an undisclosed role.[15] That same day, Deadline reported that Anthony Mackie would be reprising his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America in the film.[8]
On December 13, 2024, Deadline reported that Hayley Atwell would be reprising her role as Peggy Carter in the film.[14]
On February 11, 2025, TheWrap reported that the film would begin production in March in England.[32] However, two weeks later, Deadline revealed that the film would begin production in April.[33]
On March 26, 2025, it was announced that the film had begun production. It was also revealed that Chris Hemsworth, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Tenoch Huerta, Simu Liu, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Channing Tatum would be reprising their roles as Thor, Shuri/Black Panther, Scott Lang/Ant-Man, Namor, Shang-Chi, Hank McCoy/Beast, Bob Reynolds/Sentry, Joaquín Torres/Falcon, M'Baku, Loki, Charles Xavier/Professor X, Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, Raven Darkhölme/Mystique, Scott Summers/Cyclops, and Remy LeBeau/Gambit, respectively, in the film.[6]
On April 28, 2025, the Russo Brothers revealed that the film had begun shooting.[34]
On May 22, 2025, it was reported that the film had been pushed back from its May 1, 2026 release date to December 18, 2026.[5]
