The Attack on the Schnellzug EB912 Train was a trap, planned by HYDRA to ambush the Howling Commandos and retrieve the Tesseract from the HYDRA Stomper.

Arnim Zola and the Tesseract are captured
While serving for the Third Reich, the Red Skull intended to betray Adolf Hitler and conquer the world for himself. Red Skull learned of the legendary interdimensional entity, that he dubbed the "Champion of HYDRA". In order to take control over it, he obtained the Tesseract that was able to open the portal and unleash the Champion. However, both the Tesseract and Arnim Zola ended up captured by the SSR, due to Peggy Carter's interference.
Captain Carter and the prisoners of war fight HYDRA
After liberating Bucky Barnes and other US soldiers captured by HYDRA, Carter founded the Howling Commandos to fight HYDRA. They were joined by Steve Rogers who used the battle armor, powered by the Tesseract. Carter, Rogers and the Commandos raided multiple HYDRA facilities, turning the tides of war in Allies' favor. The Red Skull then turned against the Third Reich and ordered his men to retrieve the Tesseract from Rogers at all costs.[1]

Bucky Barnes and Captain Carter discuss ending the war

The Strategic Scientific Reserve received an intel about the Red Skull being present at the Schnellzug EB912 train. Having calculated where the armored train would be, the Howling Commandos posted up on a nearby cliff overlooking the tracks. HYDRA Stomper notified Captain Carter that the coast was clear, so the Commandos set up a zip-line from the cliff to the mountainside on which the tracks ran, allowing them to travel safely over a deep valley. When landing on the train, Barnes slipped and almost fell down the cliff but thankfully, Carter was able to catch him in time.

Captain Carter witnesses HYDRA Stomper disappearing in the explosion
As the Commandos started to advance through the train, HYDRA Stomper attempted to locate the Red Skull but instead, he caught a suspicious signature. He tried to take a closer look and found out that the train had no one inside, but was filled to the brim with explosives. HYDRA Stomper managed to warn Carter and the Commandos right before the explosion. The Commandos jumped off before the train collapsed and exploded, however, they could not find Rogers anywhere. Rogers was declared killed in action, to Carter's sorrow, however, in reality, Rogers survived the explosion thanks to his armor. HYDRA captured Rogers and retrieved the Tesseract that he used as a main battery for his armor.[1]

The Howling Commandos organize a mission

Captain Carter interrogated Arnim Zola and forced him to tell her everything he knew about the Red Skull's plans. He told Carter about the Red Skull intending to unleash an interdimensional force that would either lead HYDRA to world domination, or destroy the world if the Red Skull fails. SSR located the Red Skull's headquarters at the Castle de Krake and organized a mission to disrupt his operations and put an end to HYDRA.
Red Skull is killed by the Champion of HYDRA
Together with the Howling Commandos and Howard Stark, Carter broke into the castle while the HYDRA was using the Tesseract to open the portal. During the fight with HYDRA, Bucky Barnes and the Commandos found out that Steve Rogers was alive and helped him to get back into the armor. The Red Skull managed to unleash the Champion of HYDRA before Carter and Stark could stop him, however, he failed to take control over the Champion, resulting in the Red Skull's death. Carter, Stark and Rogers confronted the Champion, and Carter pushed it back into the portal, although she became stuck there as well, disappearing for decades.[1]
