- "Stay put, I'll be right there."
"I'll do my best. It's not exactly safe around here." - ―Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff[src]
The Attack on the Russian Power Plant was an attempt by Tony Stark to shut down Valentin Shatalov's operations.
Background[]
- "Kidnapping? There was nobody there to kidnap."
"I shall try not to be offended, Ms. Potts." - ―Pepper Potts and J.A.R.V.I.S.[src]
Natasha Romanoff was sent on an undercover mission at a power plant in Russia to investigate Valentin Shatalov, who was attempting to stage a coup in Russia. Meanwhile, Shatalov organized a robbery of Stark Archives, hoping to recreate J.A.R.V.I.S. using the Dataspine. Tony Stark discovered that Roxxon Energy Corporation was behind the attack and that A.I.M. was working with Shatalov to build a suit of armor. Nick Fury told Stark that Romanoff had gone silent while in Russia, so Stark planned to attack the power plant where the armor was being developed with hopes of rescuing Romanoff.[1]
Attack[]
Tony Stark flew to the power plant and broke in through a ventilation shaft, where Valentin Shatalov greeted him. Shatalov used his A.I.M. Drones to attack Stark as he walked away. Stark destroyed the drones and fought his way to the facility's Tesla reactor, which he destroyed. Stark escaped the facility before it exploded, and J.A.R.V.I.S. alerted Stark to Tony Stark's transponder. However, the remaining Tesla energy scrambled the signal.
J.A.R.V.I.S. recommended that Stark connect to the facility's subnet in order to find Romanoff's specific location, so he fought his way through Shatalov's defenses and reached the subnet, asking J.A.R.V.I.S. to localize Romanoff's transponder. J.A.R.V.I.S. found Romanoff, opening communication between them as he realized that Romanoff was moving through the base to avoid detection. Stark asked Romanoff to stay put, and Romanoff said she would try. Stark reached the building where Romanoff was hiding and discovered that it was protected by a Roxxon Armiger, so he defeated it. Stark found Romanoff and checked on her. As they planned their escape, Nick Fury reported that S.H.I.E.L.D. would be sending a transport.
Romanoff used a turret as Stark began to attack, and the two defended their position until a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicopter arrived and retrieved Romanoff, who boarded using a grappling hook. Just as James Rhodes arrived to help, however, he was attacked by Shatalov in the Crimson Dynamo Armor. Stark approached Shatalov and began fighting him, realizing that his armor was being powered by the power projectors and Tesla tower surrounding him. Stark fought Shatalov and destroyed the towers powering his suit. Rhodes then jumped on Shatalov's back, restraining him and allowing Stark to finish the job.[1]
Aftermath[]
- "A.I.M. has JARVIS and can power him up. What's the threat assessment?"
"Bad, Rhodey. Very very bad. Aside from having access to JARVIS' entire bar menu... they'll have access to all of my doomsday weapon designs from back in the day." - ―James Rhodes and Tony Stark[src]
Tony Stark and James Rhodes questioned Shatalov and learned that A.I.M. could power up J.A.R.V.I.S. before Shatalov died. Stark and Rhodes flew away and discussed the situation, determined to figure out who was behind A.I.M. to stop them. They met with Natasha Romanoff, who explained that Kearson DeWitt was in charge of the Crimson Dynamo project.
Stark and Rhodes hunted Kearson DeWitt, but found him too late to stop him from merging himself with technolgoy from Project P.R.O.T.E.A.N. and becoming Ultimo. Stark and Rhodes fought Ultimo and ultimately managed to defeat him.[1]
